..., you can change things, but it's a bit like using peelable Letraset, or a kindergarten cut-and-stick job.  It isn't remotely like using a word processor.

so you feel sure it will treat the pdf as if it is an image and not a text file?
Without trying Lightning PDF  I obviously can't be certain, but, Foxit PDF Editor knows what the component objects of a PDF are.  I haven't tried its graphics abilities, but it can edit graphics (sort of simple form of Paint, I think).  It knows text objects are a different kind of thing, and allows you to perform actions on them like delete individual letters or add new ones, or, to move the whole text object complete.  That last feature is like you had that block of text printed on a transparent sheet, and moved the whole sheet to a different location as a unit.  Foxit also has various features like alignment that I didn't discover when I was using it at work (haven't had to use it for a while, going rusty).

   * Edit PDF content - fix typos, remove and change text & graphics

I'd be interested to know what they mean by "Edit."  By the looks of what they say, it sounds a bit like Foxit.  Yes, you can change things, but it's a bit like using peelable Letraset, or a kindergarten cut-and-stick job.  It isn't remotely like using a word processor.

General Software Discussion / Re: Explote a clip from the clipboard
« Last post by rjbull on January 26, 2010, 04:38 PM »
The valuable feature of Clippy is that you can set up a hotkey that will run a Clippy action, or series of actions, so you can make your own custom clipboard manipulations and trigger them easily.  It's a pity that it doesn't allow you to install external tools, like mouser's Clipboard Help+Spell does.  Still, it does plenty already.  Even TextMonkey doesn't have hotkey activation like that.

Do you mean that the text is in a file, and you want to copy the file contents to the clipboard?  If so, what version of Windows are you using?  If you're on Vista, then you can use the CLIP.EXE that's built in.  On my Vista Home Premium it's in c:\Windows\System32\clip.exe.  Here's its Help:
CLIP

Description:
Redirects output of command line tools to the Windows clipboard.
This text output can then be pasted into other programs.

Parameter List:
    /?                  Displays this help message.

Examples:
DIR | CLIP          Places a copy of the current directory
                        listing into the Windows clipboard.

CLIP < README.TXT   Places a copy of the text from readme.txt
                        on to the Windows clipboard.

If you're on XP or earlier, try Horst Schaeffer's Cliptext.  Cliptext FROM a file doesn't work under Vista, but is fine on XP; Cliptext TO (i.e., contents of clipboard written to a file) works on both XP and Vista.

As for optionally removing the blank line(s), you probably need another utility.  Take a look at Clippy  (the Web site is up and down like a yoyo) or Boxer Software's TextMonkey.  I hav the Pro version, the Lite version is free but you'd need to check if it does what you want.  Both these would remove all blank lines.  If you need more control than that, you're probably better off with an editor.

General Software Discussion / Recommend JavaScript book for editor macros?
« Last post by rjbull on January 22, 2010, 04:11 PM »
Some editors use JavaScript as their macro language.  The few books I've glanced at in a bookshop all talk about JS in the context of Web pages.  Please can anyone recommend a book on JS as a macro language for editors?

TIA...

I saw a favourable comment about it in a UK magazine a few years ago.  It's the kind of tool I'd sincerely hope never to have to use, but it's nice to know it's there if you do.

FlashFolder (http://www.zett42.de/flashfolder/).

    * Total Commander® directory menu can be displayed instead of FlashFolders own favorites
[...]
I should also warn you that Vista isn't yet supported.

Has there been any development in file box extenders lately, particularly ones for Vista?  In particular, do recent versions of FlashFolder work on Vista, as I'd like its Total Commander feature?  The FlashFolder Web site has gone, which doesn't bode well.

you could also merge the resultant PDF's into a single document - not using IV, but it's not a big issue..

Yes, I have tools for that.  And it turns out that if you only want jpegs, it does that automatically.

Most times you set the number of rows and columns, and the app autofits the images accordingly and outputs the result as a new file...

Go to the top of the class, that man!    Look for a small DC credit...  You're right, it works in IrfanView.   For some reason, if there's more than one page,  IV won't output PDFs as one file, it prints each one separately, but for my current purposes that's OK.  IV can save multiple pages as JPGs without user intervention, though.

For anyone wanting to know how:  IV, press "T" for thumbnails.  Mark the images you want.  Alt-F, go down to "Create contact sheet from selected files."  Look for "Image parameters."  Pick the number of rows and columns etc. you want, press "Create," up comes the Print Preview, and off you go.

my cheap canon inkjet printer came with a delightful free program (Easy-photoprint) for printing photos in various n-up configurations on different sized paper, etc.

And I have a large package that should contain a cheap Canon multifunction that I haven't opened yet   :-[  It's my week for embarrassment  :(

I'd have liked something not tied to a particular printer manufacturer, if only to avoid license issues.  But I really should check whether that program is included  <sigh>

:wallbash: :wallbash: :wallbash:

I should add, I was intending to do the printing at the local college (it's for an evening class), but do it by printing to PDF at home and taking the PDFs to college on a USB stick.

I *think* Picasa offers the same options as Windows itself does, give or take inch to centimetre conversions.  I was hoping to be able to say, print 12 or 15 to a page, and have the program work out the best fit.  By contrast, here's part of the claims for Fotoslate (which I haven't tried yet):

Turn photos into contact sheets, wallet sized prints for sharing or 5 x 7 images in no time. You can also save printing time by customizing pages exactly to your specifications and then saving them to re-use again and again.

« Last post by rjbull on January 18, 2010, 02:39 PM »
I want to print some digital photos "n-up," but the sizes pre-set in Windows don't fit what I need.  Please can anyone recommend something that offers a greater range of options, and is, preferably, free?  The first one I found was ACD Systems' FotoSlate 4 Photo Print Studio, which isn't free, but at least it's cheap.

TIA...

Abby ScreenReader is a $10 gem.

I tried installing it the other day.  It was very insistent on starting with Windows.  I run WinPatrol Plus, and Scottie kept barking at it because it wouldn't take No for an answer.  I see no reason whatsoever why it should start with Windows; I expect to load it as necessary.  I got annoyed, and concerned that it was behaving like malware.  I uninstalled it without even trying it out.

Was that too hasty?  Does anyone have good long-term experience with it?

barney,

I currently use Magic Notes which is $19.95, mostly as I've been using it for years.  Recent versions can attach to specific windows, but I haven't tested this feature much.  The main thing I don't like about MN is that every note is a hidden window, so if you lose some other window and have to go and find it, you're apt to have horse's work to do so.

Tom Revell who wrote Stickies is very helpful, so it's worth contacting him.  And, as you're a DC charter member, DC discounts are available to you.  The "Specials" page still lists the 30% discount on Notezilla as active.  Notezilla has had some happy comments on DC in the past.

I'd be interested to hear if you ever do find your original application, though.

I don't know if Macrium has a refund policy, if yes, you don't risk that much by buying the real product and ask a refund if it doesn't work with your setup.

Quoting the Macrium Purchase page:

30 Day Money Back Guarantee:

All purchases from us come with an unconditional guarantee. If you are not satisfied with one of our software products, contact us within 30 days for instructions on obtaining a refund.
