General Software Discussion / Re: Do you use RSS feeds?
« Last post by Armando on December 10, 2007, 11:29 AM »
Like others here (app103, muntealb,...) I find Newzie very nice.

But, like I said, there is one thing that bothers me : the complete lack of "keyboard friendliness"... I mean : I can't close option windows with [esc]... or [ctrl]+[F4] or [ctr]l+[w] won't close tabs, [alt]+[letter] won't activate the different menus, [tab] or [arrows] don't work, etc.

But... there ARE shortcuts for some other functions : like to close ALL tabs, send feedback, open preferences, ... But why only these? Weird. It's otherwise a very nice app. I wonder if the developer(s) will consider improving that aspect...

I sent him/her an email… we’ll see  :)

General Software Discussion / Re: Mouse Gestures
« Last post by Armando on December 08, 2007, 02:31 PM »
I've downloaded this application a while ago, but postponed the moment of installation... now that I've installed it I can only say one thing: it's amazing in its effectiveness and simplicity! Thanks jgpaiva!

Not only does it work really really well, but it eats up a very little resources (500 kB on my system, and 0% CPU) and is really easy to configure. Exactly what we all like: small, effective, fast, simple... perfect. The beauty of this little software is that it's possible to use the same mouse gestures for all applications. Copy the gestures you configured for Opera or Maxthon, and paste them into another application's configuration.

Also : Exclude applications, include others, create global gestures, copy gestures, paste gestures, create new ones, create new commands...

I often found myself doing gestures in Explorer, word, and other applications... without any success... but now, with StrokeIt...

Highly recommended, IMO especially for those with laptops and touch pads...

Yes, we want portable-compatible-accessible-indestructible metadata!!!!!  >:(  We want it at the OS level, we want it to be easily searchable and useable, and we want it now!

(Unfortunately, maybe, tags in filenames is still the best option I came up with. It does work pretty well : portable, fairly compatible, very accessible and almost indestructible. It's even useable *everywhere*, in any software or database : from files to emails, outlook tasks and events, farr aliases.... you name it -- the only requirement is : enough characters. It's not that sexy though, a bit abstract for most people's taste.)

It [Textaloud] will also make MP3's of text for you to take away, eg. jogging, in the car and such like.

That is really cool. Is TextAloud the only one to provide that feature ?

Thanks for the short and long answers, Arjen.  :)
Having a "wikiword script" for Word is one of these little things that I keep hoping will appear... ( https://www.donation...dex.php?topic=9502.0 ). It's not an obsession though... just something that looks like it would make a positive difference in my work flow.

I wonder : is the whole thing coded in java ???

Lanux : did you find any useful keyboard shortcuts? EDIT : never mind  :-[ : they're partly customizable via the preferences!

AM-notebook from “aignes” (the WebSite-Watcher developer -- member here) could be what you're looking for. http://www.aignes.com/notebook.htm

Each note is stored in a separate file and has lots of formatting possibilities to write clear and well designed notes.
http://www.aignes.com/notebook.htm
http://www.aignes.com/notehelp/index.htm

But I wonder what fomat is used for the notes... RTF?

Do you want your notes to be kept tidily in one folder ? Or do you just need something to organize text files into a tree structure ? the second option is not hard to find : UltraRecall, MyBase, Surfulater or maybe even SQLNotes : just drag & drop your files there *as shortcuts* and organize them in a tree like structure.

Go SQLNotes ! GO!

I'm  not sure if it's fair to say that UltraRecall and InfoSelect "just bundle a whole bunch of different features into one program" though  ;)...

Yes, SQLNotes really follows in the footsteps of ECCO and and it should also be noted that it’S actually not *that* far from other PIMS like Outlook, Achieve Planner (very "grid oriented"), etc : they all use grids.

what makes SQLNotes special, is its great flexibility (in comparison Achieve Planner is stiff) : almost anything can be organized with it. Of course, if your need more structure, this flexibility can also be a problem. (One way to easily resolve this problem would be to install (through download) templates for different projects, something that *already* seems pretty easy to do.)

The fact that data is NOT prisoner of a proprietary format cannot be emphasized enough...

(BTW : to be as good a "note taker" as... I don't know... EverNote, it should be extremely fast and painless to insert notes and web clips. Those clips should have an automatic reference (web page address, etc.) "attached" to them, + instant creation date and "automatic title", etc. Everything else is already there in SQLNotes : tagging, etc.)

Thanks for the link  ! :)

Newzie looks interesting. I've installed it and started to play with it. It doesn't seem to play well with keyboard shortcuts... But, on the "plus" side, it seems to have a kind of WebsiteWatcher feature-- ie : it doesn't only monitor RSS feeds but also web pages ! I'll use it more before saying anything else...

Bump...

I've tried quite a few RSS feed readers, and I found that one common annoyance is the inability to support folders (categories) hierarchies for better organization of your feeds. Weird. GreatNews, FeedDemon, FeedReader, you name it : they can't do that.

Of the one I tried, only NewzCrawler and RSSOwl support true "categories" hierarchies. There might be others...

I must say that I was impressed with NewzCrawler when I tried it a while ago. Pretty light, lots of features, smart folders, category hierarchies... For a while I wondered  if development had stopped or what… But there was recently an announcement about version 1.9 :  http://www.newzcrawler.com/news.shtml .

Anybody here used NewzCrawler for a while and could comment ?

« Last post by Armando on December 03, 2007, 05:38 PM »
Hi Pierre Paul... I just sent you a little note.

And on another note... following a bit what superboyac just said : maybe a small tutorial on how to import stuff from Outlook (like contacts, tasks and calendar events) and other database would be nice. I actually tried to import my contacts : it says they were imported, but I have no idea how to access the data. they don't appear in the grid.

Some other stuff :

-   I don’t know if that’s a graphic card issue or what, but it happens that the menus are not redrawn properly and the different elements don’t show.
-   The date filter bar has to be re-enabled all the time because it disappears and...I don’t get how to use the date filter…  :)
-   If you inadvertently quit the Grid management window and didn't save… you loose all your work.

Thanks! I didn't know about Compendium.
But I still do think that big players like MindManager should become more flexible and open themselves to concept mapping.

I'm happy you like it too, superboyac!

SQLNotes could basically answer all of the current problems I have with Outlook.
So there's no doubt I'll be testing/using SQLNotes more soon... If only I could sync my palm with it. My life depends on it.

I think you found a nice way of resolving your tagging problem. If only it was more portable/compatible, etc... and even less proprietary (the PST format is certainly very proprietary). But I also wonder... if PST files can effectively be used to store anything, it brings up this interesting question : why didn't MS put the "my documents" folder inside a PST file ? (One of my guess is that it's not very convenient if you have something like 300gb of documents, movies, etc.)

IMO the biggest missing aspect of most mind mapping software is the ability to also draw "Concept maps". Like what VUE does : http://vue.uit.tufts.edu/. It's a completely different way of working.
