General Software Discussion / Re: dream phone
« Last post by 4wd on May 31, 2015, 07:31 PM »
... but according to a mobile forum I asked, I need ONLY dual sim full active phones to do that

The only time a mobile/data connection is helpful but not necessary is for Assisted GPS (A-GPS) where the phone can download the latest GPS almanac (and/or utilise multilateration to provide it's location) which will decrease it's TTFF (Time To First Fix) by GPS from satellites.  ie. Instead of taking a cold start of 45 seconds to provide a GPS fix, it might take 20 seconds.

The almanac will be downloaded from the GPS satellites if it can't be obtained another way this is what a normal non-data connected GPS receiver does.

Phone location can also be approximated by other means, (WiFi, etc), but none of them are a requirement for GPS, as @Ath said.

Regarding Dual SIM, some phones use the MicroSD as the slot for the second SIM, you either have Dual SIM or expanded memory capacity, not both.

:-[

I have problems with the command line.

I am trying with a portable version of Thunderbird.

Now I don't understand nothing ...
 :-[

Report it as a bug and use one of the add-ons suggested in the meantime.

Then add in 4WD's cipher and...all the Old encrypts would be gone as well
:(  As long as i don't end up wiping out the entire windows folder i should be OK :(  Maybe?

Use PowerShell:
Code: PowerShell [Select]
  1. get-childitem r:\ -Recurse -Force -ErrorAction SilentlyContinue | Where-Object {$_.Attributes -ge "Encrypted"} | Remove-Item -whatIf

Change the r:\ to whatever path you require that isn't the Windows drive.

The -whatIf parameter on the end tells you what will happen if the command was to execute (Remove-Item) but it doesn't actually execute it.

Remove the -whatIf if you're happy about what will happen.

Sample output:
Code: Text [Select]
  1. PS C:\> get-childitem r:\ -Recurse -Force -ErrorAction SilentlyContinue | Where-Object {$_.Attributes -ge "Encrypted"} | Remove-Item -whatIf
  2.
  3. Confirm
  4. The item at Microsoft.PowerShell.Core\FileSystem::R:\test\encrypt has children and the Recurse parameter was not
  5. specified. If you continue, all children will be removed with the item. Are you sure you want to continue?
  6. [Y] Yes  [A] Yes to All  [N] No  [L] No to All  [S] Suspend  [?] Help (default is "Y"): A
  7. What if: Performing the operation "Remove Directory" on target "R:\test\encrypt".
  8. What if: Performing the operation "Remove File" on target "R:\test\encrypt\20150505-121915.gpx".
  9. PS C:\>

General Software Discussion / Re: Batch PDF printing
« Last post by 4wd on May 30, 2015, 05:43 AM »
From what Contro said in his first post, he doesn't really want batch printing, he wants to print one document specifying page ranges so that each range ends up as a new PDF.

ie. 4 page ranges = 4 PDFs

He wants to do it in one operation, not printing the document 4 times specifying a different range each time.

cipher's also good for clearing data from unused blocks on hard drives, ie. make deleted stuff unrecoverable.

It's easier to open the Tresorit window, delete the default tresor that was created when it was installed, and then right-click on a folder in Explorer and choose Create tresor.

You're only allowed three tresors in the free version, (used to be five IIRC), and a maximum file size of 500MB.

  • Mad Max Fury Road - Not bad, but basically one long car chase.
  • Poltergeist (2015) - Should have walked out half way; terrible.

Spot on, Mad Max also tended to become a little tedious the longer it went on.

Hmm. It doesn't seem to be in PaleMoon.

I set it on, in FF Dev Ed. I'll try to test it / get vague impressions.

From the Pale Moon forum re. Tracking Protection:
I see no reason to favor any particular privacy data blocking method over another in the core. People can choose what they want. If you want the same functionality baked into Firefox, then install the disconnect extension. If you prefer something else, then you can take your pick of others

I had a look at the SDK, it seemed to have info on how to add your own page to the preferences and provide functions for reading/writing your own config file but I'm not sure they could be used for accessing the Core.cfg file.

Someone else who knows what they're looking for needs to look at it, (mouser?).

I had a play around with BeyondCompare seeing what happened when I changed shortcuts ... ugh! What a nightmare ... looks like there's a checksum near the beginning, keyboard shortcuts are near the end ...

As an example, I changed a shortcut from Control+Z to Control+Y:

I'm thinking that the 02 after the Z/Y is the key modifier (Control) but other than that ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I think your best bet is to try and get the author of foobar to change from using a binary format for his config files to something like XML then it would be relatively easy.

Mini-Reviews by Members / Re: Not-so-mini review of CrashPlan backup software
« Last post by 4wd on May 25, 2015, 09:22 PM »
First off I get notifications for updates to the client but trying to use the built-in update function never works. It downloads to 100%, then just sits there and never applies an update. This may be a security setting issue on my end. It's a minor but consistent annoyance. Downloading the application from their server manually and then just reinstalling it seems to work fine to update though.

FWIW, I think I've had 5-6 updates in the last two weeks or so and all of them have downloaded and installed OK.  I've had to reallow some of the components through WFwAS but other than that the updates have worked.

Last but not least if you're still interested in iDrive after my concerns expressed above, and if you don't need 10TB of space like I do, this deal might be more of interest (I haven't tested it to see if it's still live):
https://www.idrive.c...eals/pd/backupreview

That's the deal I got but I didn't have to fill out a page to get it, just sign up for a free account and install the software.  I got offered the deal after about a day by email.

Install Expresso 3.0 (Version 3.0.4750 - January 2, 2013*):

No, the server is there, but the addon is "not compatible" with my version of Firefox and won't install.

You can also call Resurrect Pages from the context menu, all it's missing from the add-on Iain mentioned is a toolbar specific button but it also gives you the option of more than one potential cache source.

*Actually it does have a toolbar button, I just never noticed it before  :-[

Thanks 4wd (thought you were on vacation :)  )

Working people have vacations, not being in employment the correct term is "go away"  ;D

Because Outlook "re-sync" every 15 seconds, some service is running constantly and i assume that is what MBAM objects to.

Is anything reported in the MBAM logs?

I have MBAM but I disabled it long ago from any form of real-time monitoring since it was annoying the hell out of me, (as is the case with almost all AV/AM I've run).

Because if you could do a wildcard exception for *Outlook.com or 207.46.0.0./16 (the MS owned IP block that Outlook.com runs on) that should cover everything flowing between OL & Ex.
-Stoic Joker (May 24, 2015, 07:16 AM)

You can exclude a domain, (eg. outlook.com), you can't exclude an IP with mask, (eg. x.x.x.x/24), single IPs only - so no wildcarding of any kind.

If you exclude a process, (eg. outlook.exe), then it doesn't matter what it tries to connect to, MBAM will allow it.

It is tough to search for a particular software.  Too many hits are for giveaways from past years.

Can you not specify a time frame to search within, (eg. 1 week) ?

I'm getting a message not compatible with my version of Pale Moon.

Try Resurrect Pages if the page you're visiting has died.

Just as a matter of interest, have you searched your registry for any occurrence of the filename?

My immediate suspicion is some real time shield is blocking what you are trying to do. Do you have one of those heuristic programs that stops stuff it thinks is suspicious?  Something along the idea of Malwarebytes antiexploit?

Booting into Safe Mode should have disabled any AV/AM program.

The next obvious suggestion for a stuck file in Windows is to boot a Linux LiveCD and remove the bugger  :)

There's also WhyReboot which will tell you of any pending file operations at reboot.
