I no longer reinstall windows, per se. I use Acronis True Image to revert to a good image of my system and have documents and program settings (where possible) on a separate partition. I guess that amounts to reinstalling windows... However, it's been at least 18 months since I've had to do it.

Hi qforce - welcome to DC, it's always nice to have developers drop in here, and thanks for pointing us to your feature request forum. I haven't tried DocFetcher, but it looks nice  FYI, Curt's mention of a dog was only peripherally linked to DocFetcher; Jim was actually referring to Chameleon Startup Manager:

Try using Chameleon Startup Manager - it does that with ANY program for which I set up a startup delay. Annoying is much too mild a word for this.

If I could find another startup manager that handled start delays I drop this dog in a minute.

Jim

Hope to see more of you in this thread and around the forum.

General Software Discussion / Re: Check&Get or Power Favorites or Linkman
« Last post by Darwin on November 09, 2008, 10:51 AM »
I've only used Check&Get, so can only note that it also allows you to mark a link as "hot". Not sure if that's what you were referring to, actually. Have you looked at mouser's Best Website Monitoring Tool Review? The winner, Website Watcher, might be worth a look as well. It's a perennial favourite among DC regulars. Don't know about its bookmark management capabilities though.

FWIW, I am very happy with Check&Get, but I don't use it for bookmark management (I don't use anything). I know at least one Check&Get user is now very happy using Linkman for management purposes. He (KenR) wrote a mini-review of it here. You've probably already seen it, though...

General Software Discussion / Re: RegBench - Registry Benchmarker Utility
« Last post by Darwin on November 09, 2008, 10:45 AM »
Registry compaction (as in, simply re-creating the hive files) shouldn't cause problems, but registry "repair" or "cleanup"? I've stayed clear from that kind of stuff for quite some time.
Me too, as all to often they end up breaking something that is impossible to spot until it's to late.

Me three... my "history" with registry cleaning is exactly as f0dder describes. This is a contentious issue, though, as there are a lot of people, even tech writers and analysts, that swear by, and recommend registry cleaning as part of computer maintenance. I've been reg cleaner free (clean, so to speak  :)) for three years now and have never noticed a difference, other than greater overall system stability.

I have to take a look at her hardware to check for multiple adapters

Doh! I forgot to mention that, not surprisingly, my notebook has wireless, ethernet, and bluetooth built in...

Thanks for the link about EduRoam, João - very nice.

Hmmm, I wonder if this is the reason why a girlfriend of mine is having problems connecting to the college Wi-Fi...
Is that through eduroam? I'm having some trouble with my univ's wireless too..

Not sure what eduroam is, but just to add that I've had my Vista notebook "in the wild" and connected to secure networks on a college campus and to open public networks (public library).

Just to note that on my notebook I've not experienced the networking problem that Carol mentioned. In fact, I've found Vista to be much easier to configure for networking and to be much better (than XP in both cases) at both maintaining a connection and to reconnect if it disconnects...

Vista Home Premium Sp-1

I wonder if this is a driver issue? My notebook is an OEM install on a Centrino platform.

Interesting, cmpm. BestSync is sold at four price points - Free, Basic ($15), Premium ($38), Business($78). To find the pricing you have to click on Contact at the top of the page and then Online Buy on the left hand pane of the page that loads and then scroll all the way down the page. Bizarre!

For personal user, the activation number is equal to the license number PLUS ONE, that is, if you have ONE license, you can activate it on TWO computers.
For enterprise user, ONE license can be activated on only ONE computer.

That's as far as I got - I got tired of looking for the differences between versions.

The art of taking notes in class...

Students today seem to expect everything as a handout or that lecture notes will be available via something like Blackboard or WebCT.

Agree with Superboyac about TC - I do have a licence for it and it is all that he says. I only ran the trial for SpeedCommander for a week or so - realised that there was no way I was going to spring for it so uninstalled it. Like superboyac, I am a DOpus user... It's AWESOME. So is XYplorer...

I'd love to buy SpeedCommander (I loved it when I ran a trial last year) but it is SOOOOOO expensive... Not the most expensive file manager out there, but close!

Where I was stationed when doing my military service (draft), we had a tube post system like that. And (mis)used it mainly to send food to each other...with or without those containers  ;)

I'm not sure I want to know...  :o

Ha, ha - forgot about a 100GB 7200.1 drive that I have... Swapped it into my newest notebook this morning and installed Windows Server 2008 64-bit... Nice and no problems so far. Will report back later. If I like this a lot, I am either going to stick with the drive that I have or buy a 320GB third generation 7200 rpm drive. Of course, this would leave me with a 250GB drive... Hmmmm... I guess the smart thing to do would be to install onto the 250GB drive, but it's only 5400rpm.

it might depend on what kind of job she wants to purse with her new skills..
one direction might be advertising/marketing.  another might be photojournalism, etc.

...as I recall it had a faint peppermint smell to it, so it didn't surprise me.
That smell takes me back every time...

You're right - it DID have a pepperminty scent. There were kids in my first grade class who used to sit at the back and eat paste... I probably tried it myself, though I don't remember doing so.

Not to mention the buzz you'd get when your teacher was making heavy use of the old-style Magic Markers. Those were good for a headache that you could take home with you at the end of the school day. As I recall, we actually enjoyed that part.
 :stars:

Heh, heh - all I ever saw were blackboards right through first year university.

Speaking of school technology - how about those tubs of white paste that had the consistency of peanut butter, which got doled out in scoops of for various crap craft projects. Then along came "stickies" and "rub-ons," and those little  bits of low-tech ended the days of "paste projects."

That white paste also gave rise to the faintly offensive accusation: "you were one of those kids who used to eat paste in school, weren't you?" Should have realised that white paste was a thing of the past when were instructed to by my son an Uhu stick for Grade One.

Impressive. Zotero DOES have a Word add-in and (apparently) you can import an Endnote database into it. Unfortunately, I cannot get my database imported  :( Will keep trying... If I didn't already have Endnote (I've been using it since 2000) and have so much invested into it re: time and references, I'd stick with Zotero.

I have used both passive and active cooling pads (ie I have one with, and one without, USB powered fans built into it). I'd be leary of the PDMCIA slot fan, somehow. Each notebook is different WRT its internal architecture - who knows what you'd wind up blowing/sucking air and dust across. Final comment is that I'd try a passive cooling pad first - the fans in a USB powered unit are LOUD (or at least they are in mine).

Oh, I also hate the new folder icons in Vista, they're ugly.

 ;D I don't mind those, either  :o
1873
I don't mind the new explorer in Vista. Of course, I spend 99% of my time using Dopus 9, so haven't really *had* to use it in earnest and thus perhaps my perspecitve might be different...
1874
As Zaine has obliquely noted, the PR problems that MS has with Vista stem from the pre-Sp1 release, I think. I've detailed elsewhere on this forum my experince with purchasing and returning a Toshiba notebook with Vista pre-Sp1 installed on it. I was pulling my hair out before I even saw the Windows desktop (that machine had 2GB RAM and integrated graphics) because it took almost two hours to install Vista from the partition on the harddrive. When I finally got it set up, I was disappointed with the overall performance/experience of using it and returned it and invested in doubling the RAM on my XP machine. Ten months later, I bought the machine I am typing on now - right out of the box it was, and remains, a joy to use. Much peppier than my XP machine, which is still no slouch and I still love...
1875
I guess the issue here is the difference betweeh "should" and "what I want"... I'm a mercenary bugger and would *love* MS to upgrade me to Windows 7 for free... I am more than satisfied with the Vista experience and wouldn't feel compelled to upgrade, though. That, coupled with the fact that even if 7 came out in December it will have been almost two years since Vista went gold and there isn't any compelling reason for me to feel that MS is owes me or anyone else a free licence. BUT I'd take it if they offered it to me!
