Living Room / Are Creative Commons Licenses Even Enforceable?
« Last post by app103 on February 28, 2012, 10:51 AM »
A very well written article that raises a lot of questions about the enforceability of Creative Commons licenses. A good read and a lot to think about if you release works with a CC license or use CC licensed content.

Living Room / Re: YouTube Identifies Birdsong As Copyrighted Music
« Last post by app103 on February 28, 2012, 10:29 AM »
The post linked to a Youtube support thread that has a post that states the following:

Is this a freak occurrence?

NO! It is a very common occurrence. It is a well-known error. One person has had to file over 100 disputes for mistaken bird sounds. For some reason Google is reluctant to fix this so companies like rumblefish take advantage of it to gain fraudulent income (google makes something also).

Companies registering reference file with the CID are required to manually review any disputed video but rumblefish is one of many companies who just automatically confirm the content regardless of how ridiculous the match is.

Official Announcements / Re: I want to try an experiment on the site for March 2012
« Last post by app103 on February 17, 2012, 03:46 AM »
Give it a try if you want. I don't have a problem with it.

Do it permanently and I still don't have a problem with it.

But if you are going to do experimenting, I would also encourage you to experiment with Project Wonderful, as well. You will get much more control over what ads get displayed, and you might even feel good about them. And with the traffic this site gets, you will likely have rather good bids. Plus the site will make money even if nobody clicks the ads.  ;)

General Software Discussion / Re: Help me choose an online backup service

@app - Their new platform is quite impressive. Interesting what they had to say about Hitachi drives too. Can't get more of a real world test than what these guys are doing.

Speaking to a few of my cronies, we're thinking crazy thoughts about massive storage like they're doing combined with machines running something like myCloud (see below.) I'm not surprised myCloud has since been acquired by Citrix. Fortunately it was built on an open source platform so it's still available as a free download.

Right now almost all the pieces are in place. There's affordable massive storage technology, open source server and desktop operating systems and software...so all that's needed is a good replacement for the public IPaddress and DNS system (new protocol maybe?) and we'd be at the point where we could implement our very own alternative Internet. Bwahahahahaha!!!
 (see attachment in previous post)
Dilbert would be envious. ;D

I drooled over the original about 2 years ago and yeah, it does provoke crazy thoughts, especially if you are a digital packrat. Just think of the amount of crap I could download and store on one of those babies! :D

Backblaze

Tried it today. Maybe it's a cheap solution but for an advanced or pro user this isn't probably the way to go. You can exclude folders / drives but it's a cumbersome task if you have a nested folder structure and want to sync several folders inside this structure.

It is _really_ not possible to reverse it and say: Only include these specified folders that I want to sync, no matter what.

They are giving you unlimited space for backups. Why would you want to exclude anything? The only reason I can think of to exclude anything from backup is to keep from running out of space, which isn't going to happen with Backblaze, so you might as well let it backup everything.

I've got most of our high backup volume clients set up for either Carbonite or Backblaze.

I've been happy with both services.

Everybody knows about Carbonite. Backblaze is a little different in the way it works from most. It's more a continuous mirroring rather than a traditional backup/sync service (although it can be set up to do a scheduled standard backup if you prefer), so definitely visit their website for full details. They'll provide you with a free 15-day trial to see if it works for you. For general backup use I slightly prefer Backblaze. Especially now that they've added support for backing up VMs. Datasheet here. And having the option to have them send a DVD or a drive to restore from is a major plus for me. Sure beats pulling half a terabyte of data down the wire during a major restore.

I'm not too up on what the exact performance is for either of these two services. They're more than fast enough for what we're doing.

Luck. :)

Backblaze would probably be the one I'd go with if I could afford something like this. They are not a reseller like BeeCloud that might suffer the same fate as Backify, the software seems simple enough, nothing to think about, backs up everything, unlimited storage at $95 for 2 years, and unlike others they haven't raised their rates in their last 3 years of business.

And they don't mind giving you the details to some of the secrets to their success. http://blog.backblaz...ealing-more-secrets/

So I'll need to buy another hard drive just for Calibre?
Does it at least give you the option not to put all of that on your OS drive?

eBooks aren't all that big, so it's a reasonable choice to take a copy of them into it's library tree, rather than try & track changes that would occur if it just tried to reference them 'outside'.  I've currently only got just over 1000 books in mine, and the library around 912MB  (Mostly ePub, rather than PDF though).

One advantage not mentioned is that using Stanza on the iPad or the browser on a Kindle, I can access them wirelessly via Calibre's server & WiFi!

It does allow you to choose where to place the library (and to have more than 1 if desired), including moving an existing library tree around.

They say a picture is worth a thousand words, so maybe this will explain why I don't want my books moved or copied anywhere else other than where they already are.

@app103:[/b] The version of Calibre I am using does not move anything around, but copies (duplicates) your documents (Word and PDF) into a folder, and changes the filenames a bit:
Example: C:\Users\[User]\Calibre Library\[Author ID]\Document file name.ext

So I'll need to buy another hard drive just for Calibre?

Does it at least give you the option not to put all of that on your OS drive?

I used to be a user of My Ebook Library until the services and community associated with the application shut down, and you could no longer retrieve book information from the internet.

I tried Calibre as a possible replacement but quickly uninstalled it when it insisted on destroying my well organized book collection by moving all my books into a single folder. That was a deal breaker for me.

Have they done anything to make that optional yet? I want to keep my books right where they are, organized in folders by subject (non-fiction) or author (fiction).

Developer's Corner / Re: A myth called the Indian programmer
« Last post by app103 on February 14, 2012, 06:05 PM »
I came across a slew of people from India on Orkut in the various programming groups, that had some mad skills and could build complex applications I can't even dream about, if you told them what to build, how it was to look, what features, etc.

For whatever reason they lack the big picture way of thinking, lacked imagination, and couldn't come up with an original application idea of their own...not even a simple one. And I don't understand why. How is this possible? It was as if the creativity had been beaten out of them early on in life or something. It completely freaked me out.

They admired my simple apps as if I were some sort of programming goddess. It made me very uncomfortable to have people with more abilities in their little finger than I have in my whole body, to raise me up on some sort of pedestal like that. They were asking me to mentor them. It should have been the other way around. It's the primary reason why I stopped using Orkut. I could not handle being showered with so much undeserved admiration and attention.

Sometimes we forget to listen to Jimi and need a reminder. ;)

For whatever reason, I was never that crazy about his music until I heard Tracy Silverman's cover of 1983. Unfortunately, there is no youtube video for it. You'll have to go to his website and listen to it.

(Vista actually introduced the 256x256 icons. On XP, the typical max. size was 48x48.)

A 48x48 icon is quite small when displayed in Explorer on XP, like so:

Screenshot - 2_11_2012 , 3_12_25 PM.png

But XP is quite capable of displaying 128x128, like so:

Screenshot - 2_11_2012 , 3_12_53 PM.png

And even Win9x is capable of displaying greater than 48x48. I have had much success with 256 color icons measuring 99x99.

I would love an "edit in SC" option on the context menu of images, that way I could stop copying the images over and then copying them back to where they were.

Used ToyCon (portable) to convert.

Website is at http://www.pngfactor...echarger-ToYcon.html

The largest it seems capable of producing is 256x256. How did you get it to do 512x512?

http://www.iaza.com can do what you want, as well.

I only managed to get 200x200 from that one.

would you like one of the multi-resolution icons, eg 512, 256, 128 ... etc all in one, or just 512?

What are you using to do it, because I can't do higher than 256x256 with IcoFX.

I was trying to focus the discussion on the technical point of view, and what can be done to ask the download site to not list you. Is anyone forbid this in the end-user license agrement for example ?

Maybe I will better document how I do it from now on and publish a guide for how to best deal with each site, what works, what doesn't, etc.  ;)

@Superboyac but how you get the traffic for your software them ? organic SEO ?

Shameless self promotion in all the right places and to all the right people. aka word of mouth advertising. In this age of social media, it's not that difficult.

Think about this...

How to you learn what is out there when it comes to applications you can not find on a download site, like web apps, for example? If they are not listed on the download sites, how on earth is anyone going to find out about them? Once you figure that out, consider the fact the same method can be applied to downloadable applications. Download sites really aren't necessary to bring you traffic. In fact, like I said before, they don't bring you traffic...they steal it from you.

I just asked to Softonic to remove my programs, or to remove the softonic downloader, as I don't like the fact they make money on my back..

I have been asking most download sites to remove my software, regardless of whether or not they are bundling it with adware or using downloaders.

They are all making money off my software by keeping people away from my website, keeping me from making any money from the ads displayed on my site, and making money off the ads they display on pages where they list my software. Furthermore, most of them are hotlinking to my downloads, which means they are abusing the bandwidth that they are not paying for. Too many of these download sites have a really bad reputation for not practicing quality control with the apps they list, spreading malware to unsuspecting users, getting themselves red ratings on WOT, which can damage the reputation of any developer that has his stuff listed right alongside the malware.

A lot of these download sites are engaging in what could be called content theft, trolling the internet for software that they can hijack without permission to stick on their own site, copying the descriptions right off the developer's site, stealing their screenshots, and stealing their bandwidth by hotlinking to their files, then throwing ads on it to make money. If they did this same thing with other types of content, like say blog articles, the bloggers wouldn't be too happy about it. I don't see a reason for me to be happy about it, either.

I am sick of working for them for free and having them profit from it. Since my stuff is all freeware, it doesn't make any sense to me to allow them to list it. It makes about as much sense as voluntarily infecting myself with a tapeworm.

If they were in the habit of sending their visitors to my site to acquire the software, I would probably feel very differently about it. But that's not what they do.

Not so much funny as clever:

That is clever but I think the way I do it probably works better in the long run. I have always used strips of paper and clear packing tape to create laminated tags that don't fall off.

I think what most consumers don’t realize is that every time they buy a used game, there is ZERO money making it back to the Game Developers.  All of those profits are going directly to the re-seller and making it more and more difficult for us to continue making higher quality products.

There is no profit to be made in buying something at full price, finding out you don't really like it or deciding you don't want it any more, then selling it at less than you paid for it. Ask anyone who has ever had a yard sale if they have ever recovered 100% of what they originally paid for the stuff they sold.

And speaking of making higher quality products, the secret in cutting down on the amount of used stuff sold is to make a higher quality product that people don't want to part with in the first place.
