General Software Discussion / Re: Website download management program/script
« Last post by tinjaw on November 09, 2006, 08:24 AM »
Josh,

I do have some suggestions, but to narrow it down, what software are you using currently for the general website? That will help me best suggest something that melds well with what you already have.

Nice find mouser. Panel Commander and Unlimited Menus look interesting. I think I'll check those out this weekend.

Josh,

Are these strictly images or are they various file types?

I am a big fan of Multi Timer. I also use World Time Clock, Multi Clipboard, Password Generator, and Week Scheduler from Johannes Wallroth as well.

General Software Discussion / Re: Best free firewall for Windows?
« Last post by tinjaw on November 08, 2006, 09:01 AM »
Josh,

Although IPCop is good, if you have a spare PC I suggest you use Astaro Gateway instead. It is a much more capable product. Although it seems a little confusing, you can download the evaluation version and you will be given a home user license. There is a option to pay for virus scanning and email scanning at the gateway which is a good option if you have multiple computers on a home LAN.

I suggest taking looking at Comodo.

It depends on the sound chips involved. The one on the mobo is probably just as good if not better.

Developer's Corner / Re: What programming language is paying your rent this month?
« Last post by tinjaw on November 04, 2006, 04:57 AM »
Delphi is a very good product and will be around for years. It has a solid footing in corporate development. Yes, I am biased. I worked for Borland for many years and was a Certified Borland Delphi Client Server Developer and a Senior Developer Support Engineer for the Dephi product. If you search Amazon for "Chaim Krause", you will also find a book in which I was a co-author on Delphi.

Anders built Delphi. The same Anders that moved to Microsoft and built C#. You can think of it as taking the lessons learned while building Delphi and doing it all over again with C instead of PASCAL. From what I have heard, if you grok Delphi at the deepest level, the switch to C# is without pain.

Delphi makes an excellent first language. PASCAL was created for the purpose of instruction in computer science and Delphi makes is object oriented. It also has solid database support.

Although most of my programming these days is in Java, PHP, or Python, I still have a soft spot for Delphi.

SyncToy v1.4
SyncToy helps you copy, move, rename, and delete files between folders and computers quickly and easily.

Version 1.0 was release over a year ago and they have added some new features.

Living Room / ChatterBlocker
« Last post by tinjaw on November 03, 2006, 08:01 AM »
Today I made a software purchase, ChatterBlocker.

I downloaded the demo and used it yesterday and it worked very well. The price used to be $40, but they recently halved it to $20. It is a must buy at that price for anybody that works regularly in an office environment.

I run it on my laptop and listen using a pair of Phillips SBC HN110 noise-cancelling headphones. The headphones are nice because they cover a dynamic range that includes human voices around 1 KHz.

The two together create a pretty impenetrable sound barrier. Assailing my ears without this combo are an air conditioner, electric fan, several computer fans, office chatter or about ten officemates, and some traffic at the loading dock.

It's not free for ever. Is it?
Yes it is. There is an open source version of SUSE that is the same as Enterprise SUSE without the support contract with Novell.

I think I figured out the cause of the error for Win2000! I cannot test it as I don't have Win2000 but I hope you can give me feedback and tell me whether it works.

I have Win2K WS and SVR. I used to work for Borland doing developer support and QA. If you want to shoot me a pm on how to get your latest build I can do some testing for you this weekend.

P.S. I have never used SkyIDE.

Living Room / Re: Best way to protect hard drive that is only used for backup?
« Last post by tinjaw on November 02, 2006, 01:52 PM »
Yes, if the controller and drive are hotswap capable, it should be good.

What backup software are you using? For example Acronis True Image allows you to create a hidden partition that is only available to the Acronis software. (Technically it is available, but for purposes of this discussion or less than advanced users you can consider it so.)

Pick me! Pick me! Pick me! 8)

I will actually use it to its full potential

Software development in multiple languages? Yep, that's me.
Running a Active Directory Forest with Server 2003? Yep, I will.
Search MSDN at 2:45 a.m. while trying to debugg my ASP.NET app? You betcha!

Oh! The possibilities are endless and exciting!  :-*

Even if I don't win, I still want to thank Veign for the very generous donation.

Living Room / Re: Toad for MySQL 2.0 - Free Version Available
« Last post by tinjaw on November 02, 2006, 01:39 PM »
How is it different from the GUI tool pack provided by MySQL?

Another freeware option that works well is MySQL Manager (lite version is free)
Toad for Oracle has been around for a long time and many people are experienced with it enough that they would just rather use Toad with DBs other than Oracle, so they don't have to learn a new tool. So their main target audience is 1) Toad for Oracle users that need to work with MySQL, 2) People that have heard good things about Toad for Oracle, haven't had a previous need to learn and SQL tool and now need to work with MySQL and 3) Those who need a broader tool than those provided with the DB. For example integration with source/version control, or having both DBA and development tools in one tool.

Living Room / Toad for MySQL 2.0 - Free Version Available
« Last post by tinjaw on October 30, 2006, 09:02 AM »
I have been meaning to post this for quite some time now. <a href="http://www.quest.com">Quest Software</a> has released <a href="http://www.quest.com/toad_for_mysql/">Toad for MySQL 2.0</a>, and there is a free version. If anybody works with MySQL as either a developer or a DBA should download it and take it for an extended test drive. Toad is another one of those swiss-army-like tools that you can only really appreciate after extended use.

Darwin,

You can do all of the things you mention. At least you can in the + version. If you open settings and turn on "check spelling on the fly" and then use the "Replacement-list" hotkey I think you will get the behavior you want.

I'm not sure if it meets all of your needs. But I have used tinySpell+ for over a year and it does everything I need it to do. YMMV. There is a free version as well, tinySpell.

While looking for some smilies I stumbled upon a pretty neat site for smilies - Mazeguy's Smilies. They even have a online application to create your own smilie speech bubbles like the one above.

You could probably do this easily using "Page Styles". One for viewing and one for printing.

KM what? Please elaborate.

Knowledge Management. It is a very interesting field. It intersects (overlays ?) with my interests in things like web site authoring, database design, etc.

wreckedcarzz,

First off all it is nice to see you taking on such a project. They best way to learn is to try, progress to do, and then to teach. You are on the right track.

And some questions for you:
1) What is your motivation for this project? IOW why did you choose this project?
2) What is the targeted use case?
3) Do you want to learn/do each piece of the project yourself, or concentrate on the collection/integration of the pieces and have other do things like create the installer for you?
4) Have you thought about creating test cases using virtual machines to test your software?

And finally, Three days ago I started to play with NSIS. It is script driven, but some GUI wizard exist. It is free, popular, and very capable.

And last, but not least, good luck with your project

What you talking 'bout Willis!?! Although it's not full screen Acrobat Reader allows for viewing two pages at a time. If you maximize the windows and tidy up the toolbars it is close to fullscreen. View | Page Layout | Facing.

Also, note that the Kaspersky suite is available as a AOL-branded product and is available for free! Even if you aren't an AOL user. I've been using it for about three weeks now.
