You're impressed that I can count, right? I can actually make it all the way to 21, thanks to my vestigial 6th toe.

Actually, I was going to remark on the absence of a fifth column but I didn't want to provoke a row.

In a thread like this, often we forget to compliment you on all that is good in Auspex, and growing better.

Because you guys can potentially do better but with all the yes-sayers and fanboys around it's pretty hard to really move ahead you know.
-lotusrootstarch (February 25, 2011, 05:13 AM)

One can almost always do better. Constructive criticism should be accepted with grace, if well meant, and probably evaluated seriously even if not. Many of us here are 'listening' to what you say and thinking about it. We tend to do that around here.

My difficulty is that I don't see where or how your comments are constructive. To me they seem full of "you should/you shouldn't" without any substantive suggestions of how or why. Your comments about servers did offer some suggestions but those had already been considered, tried, and improved upon.

I agree that fund raisers tend to kick up the dust of discussion and that a good bit of what's talked about never comes to pass once that dust settles. It's also true that changes and improvements do take place even if they do not seem dramatic. I would be offended to be categorized as a "yes-sayer or fanboy" and, like you, I have made a modest donation or two to the site. One can only speak personally but I shall contribute again because I am satisfied with DonationCoder, see no need for radical change, and am pleased by the steady improvements that I see. A chacun son goût.

I'm still getting that ghost tab in the taskbar. Must be something here in my setup but it only happens with Auspex.

That's improved for me!

With minimize to tray set on, clicking the minimize button sends Auspex to the task bar but clicking the close button sends it to the tray, removing the task-bar entry. Previously, the task-bar entry wouldn't go away until Auspex was DEAD, DEAD, DEAD, KILLED OFF, and BURIED, not that it ever bothered me.

Sorry, Tim!  :D

p.s. Be nice to see a double-click on the tray icon bring up the GUI.

@techidave

Does it have to be either or?

It looks as though you'll have a limited circulation, so why not create copies of a 2-CD redbook set and a single .mp3 data CD as well?

but this same person has a PC, internet connection, is well-fed, housed, educated

The thought had occurred to me, timns, but there are people with low-end equipment, without a lot of money, using basic internet stuff. They're the ones who probably benefit most from free software. They're also the least likely to qulaify for means to make online payments.

Okay, I agree, not nearly so many as the lucky majority whom you describe and possibly too few to worry about.

I know that, when I first came to DC, I had to go and set up an account in order to make a donation, and the bother of that held me back for quite some time. (Now, you'll notice, I seldom hold back at all  ;))

But can't pay even a dollar to help support the site?

Or even 10¢.  Agree with that but... perhaps can't access a mechanism by which to pay that 10¢?

General Software Discussion / Re: Why is Software for Hardware Always Sucky?
« Last post by cranioscopical on February 22, 2011, 10:45 AM »
I've rather assumed that it's because those companies are hardware oriented and see user interface software as just a last minute chore that has to be undertaken before rushing to market.
1843
Let your friends know about us -- our site can be confusing at times, and we rely on word of mouth to let people know that we are worth supporting.

I'd use less deprecating language for this item. DC is great! Something along the lines of "Tell your friends! DC can take a while to explore and we rely on word of mouth to help people get started. Let people know what's new, what's good, and that it's all worth supporting"

100% agree!

I don't feel any need to explain/justify anything.
It also seems to me that the question is obtuse ...

Hi, I see that you are enjoying using Trout, the free software to which skwire has given so much of his own time, developing and tuning it for the benefit of others. I'm sure that we all appreciate his efforts very much, don't we? Perhaps it's a language difficulty (I certainly can't express myself well, even in my native tongue) but some of your comments seem rather demanding and border on a lack of politeness that is uncommon here on DonationCoder. You might consider that explaining why you do what you do, or why you want to do some other thing, would be a practical way to help the person whose assistance you seek to understand your purpose. Generally speaking, I've found that telling people that their questions are obtuse is somewhat less than the optimal way of eliciting their co-operation. Just a thought…

A lot of people are still running XP, won't it work under that?
I wasn't thinking of giving it to a charity for disposal, rather finding a volunteer group of some kind that might find it useful.
It's probably a lost cause  :(

With respect, I feel that might not work. If people can't see and get a sense of what's on offer that could be a disincentive.
