Living Room / Flowchart and Diagramming Review
« Last post by brotherS on October 30, 2005, 10:56 AM »
Looks great, but for the ~300 bucks it should  Did you really use that one for a longer period?

I bought it a few years ago at academic pricing, and got a cheap upgrade too. I wouldn't pay full price for it though ...

It is an excellent program.
The review might answer this question later, but is it the best you know for this kind of stuff?

A wiki might just be ideal for a couple other reasons.

Consider a category like audio editors. That is NOT something that 1 person could possible do a good job of for many reasons. I've used a lot of them out there and know most of them pretty well, but the scope is just massive. It's like trying to do anti-virus software or databases. They're just big topics that require a lot of research and time - LOTS of time.

With a wiki, the wiki-view could evolve over time with multiple contributors.
Exactly, the wiki will help DC to grow and vice-versa, I'm sure!

A wiki would allow multiple contributors.

Good idea Mouser!

Just to remind again, SmartDraw is now at version 7.3. There have been some big interface changes since version 6, so any review would need to be based on that version.

If you haven't got access to version 7.3 there is a free trial version on their website: here

I still don't know exactly how we're going to use this, but feel free to play around with it in the meantime.
Err, careful what you say there  :D

Users could use the Sandbox now to be found on https://www.donation.../index.php/Main_Page to play around.

Maybe there's someone with some wiki experience who can clue us in to some of the stuff we might consider?
I added a link to the URL for the wiki syntax, it's rather newbie-friendly.

@mouser: Please get some info about spam-protection. It might only take a few days until bots discover the wiki and start to spam it with Viagra and pr0n URLs, we need to be ready...

This could be fun, and useful ....
There's a typo in This will be fun, and useful ;)

How about adding it to the top MenuBar ?
Yeah, both should be added to the top menubar, and in a new color for the first two months.

As with the bug tracker is this going to be open access to all registered members? If so can the site membership be integrated into the Media Wiki user database so that we only have to login once ?

If you work out how to do this automatically I will be really interested how you did it ....
Might be possible, but rather hard to code I guess...

@Stefan: Amazing, thanks!

@mouser: I think it'd really the best way to use an installer for SC only and a second installer for all the nice add-on clips - that has also the advantage that the second one could be updated even when there's no change in SC and the SC download is smaller.

I heartily agree with you. In most cases, more options are better. Sometimes, however, you run into a program that does only one thing, and does it so well that you can't imagine that you would need anything else.
"People using things they can't imagine they would need/like something better instead" is the main reason progress is not faster :D
When I read your post I immediately had to think about the great, great http://www.autohotkey.com - read https://www.donation...dex.php?topic=1167.0 for more details please.

In the case of the BT client, I can imagine a few things I would add to it if I thought I'd use them. For example, a history function might be nice. And if I'm going to add that, what about a nice search feature for finding BT downloads all over the net. If I add much more than that, I'm going to end up with some kind of new social software like some of the file sharing applications and services. You know, communities, chat, etc.
Well, most people prefer to use BT clients just for the best possible file transfer, not for chat and stuff. And for legal reason I believe most clients won't get a search feature (which is not THAT bad IMHO).
1833
Ok, BrotherS, you are just going to have to provide me with a mini-review of Azureus now. I like the BT client. It's so simple. Why do I need more options?

Warning: Your response could be broadcast in my newsletter. LOL
:D
Damn, I seem to have to do one (mini-)review... ;)

I prefer "more options" over (too) "simple", that's why I love Miranda IM (see below) and Wikimedia over more naked wikis... IMHO there's no such thing as "too many options", there are just "not yet perfect user interfaces" :)
1834
OK, just checked with version 0.8.2.
Taking a screenshot is super easy, just go to Video - Snapshot.
The saved files goes to the "My Pictures" folder.
Thanks a lot! Since there is no "My Pictures" folder on my PC I had to set a new folder in the Preferences, capture an image, check its name and search my HD for images named like that. That way I also found my test captures :) Works great!
1835
I use BitTorrent, which is by the same team which started the BT thing. Now Opera is starting to support it as part of the browser.
BitTorrent started it all, but now they need to copy Azureus options because that's the program coming up with new ideas :) I don't know anyone who still uses the original BT client.

@mouser:

Maybe you can ask the http://www.diagramst...dio.com/ds/qtour.htm and www.pacestar.com folks if they want to throw in some free copies for next month's action?

Say we will take about it all the time! We will!

I’m working on an overview. I have a list of some applications in Flowcharting/Diagramming and will examine details at the listed URLs. Additions welcome.
http://www.diagramst..._to_your_diagram.htm looks great - and the http://fileforum.bet...amStudio/996394192/1 rating is very good too!

Check also the http://www.diagramst...dio.com/ds/qtour.htm - wow! Maybe you could use those animated gifs for your review. I really wish I had this a few years ago... would have saved me tons of time...

I like the scaled paper and how it looks:

Btw, is there a nice and free make-animated-gif-out-of several png screenshots tool?

I generally steer my readers away from file sharing, but I like the look of E-Mule.
IMHO E-Mule is part of the past, modern BitTorrent apps are the future.

A 500mb bittorrent full-length movie spoof on star trek and babylon 9 (english subtitles).

i'm half-way through and *loving* it.  Very high quality fan-made movie, special effects are superb and the movie is extremely entertaining so far.  easily the best thing like this i have ever seen.
Yeah, the first half was the best IMHO. Great work for a fan-made movie!

I like the idea of having a "Made with Screenshot Captor" object or maybe even a few different in SC, the one that's there right now looks good but not perfectly on non-white backgrounds, check the corners:

I'm a fan of instanteous search tools like, Powermarks, Find and Run Robot, Yahoo Desktop Search Programs, Seek (which I used before Find and Run Robot) http://home.ripway.com/2004-10/188589/

And here's another one I suggest : Handyfind http://www.handykeys.com/
It's not that known yet, you should rate (and maybe review) it here: http://fileforum.bet...ndyFind/1125976628/1

Good find! Let's see if I can get used to it :D

when i wrote my email review (https://www.donation...ailClient/index.html)
i provided some of the more subtle sounds i have found for alerting on new mail:

Thanks again, after playing around with those for some time, editing and changing stuff, I came up with some funny and maybe bizarre results - not for every taste for sure, but I think I found what I needed (for now). :)

Yes, but blue is the nicest color for me to highlight something.
You see is it no link if you hoover over this blue words.
Don't force people to move the mouse when they don't need to ;) I suggest to just use bold to highlight stuff - or a different color.

Toolswindow is moveable.
Huh? Did I miss an option? :) What exactly do you mean?

Save+ is great and very nifty, thanks brotherS.
:) Yeah, I've used it several times myself already, really helpful.

2.02.02 is really an improvement - again!  :D

The simplist would be C:\>AT /?

Nice are thoose CRON tools too.
But all are command line tools.

Maybe Autohotkey with an GUI ?

If i remember more i let ya know.
Thanks... I thought about AutoHotkey too, but do not yet know enough about it myself yet.  :(

PS: Coloring text in blue causes confusion, looks a lot like linked URLs.

Finished Programs / DONE: simple tool needed: start x.exe in y seconds
« Last post by brotherS on October 25, 2005, 11:56 PM »
Hi,

I need a simple tool to let me start up a certain .exe file in a definable number of minutes. It would be perfect if a tiny window would pop up when I start this tool where I would just have to enter the minute value (if I like a different one from the one before) and hit Enter. Then maybe there would be a countdown displayed where I can change the minute value to restart the countdown with that and maybe a stop button to stop the countdown completely.

Any ideas?

WinCron probably could do that, but ~80 bucks is too much...
