Just to name three:

Powerpro remains on top of my list, it really is all in one.
Dropbox is proving very useful every day.
do Organizer, may not be the best ever but it does the job for me.

I agree with all the things mouser says on the general issue of sites and money and frankly continually astounded (in a good way) by DC and free software in general. Having said that I think a person who is the modern version of a journalist or a software creator can not just hope for donations or institutional or VC support. Donation based is not always a success (believe me I have been involved in more than one case) and financial support mainly goes to the biggest or the most promising (mozilla or twitter for two admittedly big examples)
A small site with relatively low content is not argument against some one who makes a site his 'career'. We have a very good example right here on DC...ghacks

Living Room / Re: Buzzzzzzzzinggggg - Google Buzz - Gmail with facebook features

If google and users too accept that the appeal of something like Wave is primarily for groups of people doing something together and (for example) not for short entries like twitter then you haven't wasted time working on Wave. The problem is the expectation that one app will be all things for all people.

Buzz is kind of messy now because it's interface is within gmail, practically the only thing one can do is expand or collapse entries.

It says a lot about how innovative it is that google didn't even need a beta phase for it  :P

Experiment or otherwise I agree with Bamse. The way I see it for the majority of the web the time of running away from (reasonably) ad-laden sites is over. It is natural to fear it downloading malware but ad on an established friendly site is either turned off or accepted as a necessity.

Sad to hear, always wondered why v.2 is stuck at some private or public beta phase. Hope it is resolved.

Projects should either be real open source with a team and public repository of sorts or just proprietary. In my opinion 'visible' source ones like vBulletin succeed because they were early options and provide constant support, otherwise fully open source or the opposite.

DonationCoder is a place where random thoughts and ideas not only get answered but get coded by a friendly community.

Software for specific and unique tasks and requirements are created and often.

A collection of software with ever surprising features are found in the long list of user created pages.

The only thing I can say is:
Opponents, and let's face it that's all they are, are always looking for holes. This time the hole was not even that.

The model for non-internet advertising has always been based on impressions (number of subscribers, sitcom ratings, etc.).
From the advent of web advertising impressions have been valued less and less (have to click, have to make a purchase, etc.)

That is the problem and that is where the web diverges from traditional media.

I fooled 'em. Bought 2 items, showed the receipt, ran off with the shopping buggy.

Historical lessons in 'all things for all people' are rarely a success. May be google can be different but may be not.

Very initial look. XP and search related error gone, thanx. Love the hover preview and info.

Not sure if it was mentioned (have to re-read thread and your posts) or even if it is desirable. One thing I really like is that ability to get a 'flat view'. Images in all sub folders also loaded on the right hand side when a folder is clicked on.

Not specific to FARR only but -compose is the command line parameter to open the compose window

So working with something similar to this:

"C:\Program Files\Mozilla Thunderbird\Thunderbird.exe" -compose
