google scholar sounds more than enough for my purposes but i have to admit that i will quickly lose interest the moment jargon creeps in. i'm more of an 'idiots guide to time' kind of person, well, perhaps not quite that bad as i can imagine how terrible such a book would be.

from what you have read yourself would you be able to comment on whether there is any mention on the 'borders of temporal perception' - you know, like where the beginning and ending of 'now' is. maybe it's a trivial matter that has been well theorised about or well explained but it strikes me as something that's impossible to discuss. perhaps that is because i'm simply lacking in the language that is used in this area of research.

yes, you could be the lucky winner of my completely unread copy of 3ds max 5 bible (with cd). yes, 3ds max is now at version 9 but why miss out on everything version 5 had to offer.

how to win - just post an amusing picture of Cody and whichever Cody picks out will get this amazing prize. i'll even get Cody to sign the book for you.

runners up can expect similarly fantastic out of date books from my bookshelf that i have yet to decide upon.

i prefer 'Rename Master' also (okay, i know i'm repeating myself from earlier in this thread).

i think the use of the tabs in rename master just make it a little easier to understand. i don't use rename tools very often to it's nice to have an interface that is intuitive enough to work with when you've not seen it for a couple of months.

but, no doubt, ReNamer will feel more intuitive to other people.

strange, it seems to work okay for me and a couple of other people have made posts recently so it was working for them also.

sometimes i've noticed that things will or will not work depending on whether you add the www part to the url.

well, i was expecting the descriptions that people gave to be all the same - assuming that the brain dictates how time would be perceived but from app's description it's clear there is room for individual symbols and imagery. i certainly don't think in circular pictures or different colours so that is very interesting to hear about. i imagine there will be cultural differences also.

i'd also like to know more about ampa's story. it reminds me of the alien creatures in Kurt Vonegut's 'Slaughterhouse Five'. http://www.amazon.co...191048545&sr=8-1

Living Room / how do you represent 'time' in your head?
« Last post by nudone on September 28, 2007, 01:00 PM »
i'm thinking of doing a diagram representing my 'life'. maybe like a tree with the 'key' events represented along the branches. it will probably look more like a series of arrows rather than a tree.

this reminded me of something i've sometimes pondered about but never really asked anyone - how do you represent time in your own head? so, that's your past, present and future?

do you see images of events, are they staggered across a timeline, is the timeline a single line. more, how do you think of the days of the week, months of the year, what about a big chunk of time like a year.

perhaps it's beyond explanation how you perceive it all. perhaps computers have provided a visual language to represent it so now we think in terms of software calendar layouts with moving images, etc.

Living Room / Re: Requesting new organization ideas for fresh windows installation
« Last post by nudone on September 27, 2007, 10:27 AM »
i'm hoping to reinstall xp soon - when i have the courage to face the length of time it will take to get everything 'just right'. i'm jotting down a few things on how i'll try and set everything up so that i don't forget when the time comes.

main concern is to provide easy backup/synchronisation and manageability of working files/folders. so without stating too much of the obvious (hopefully)...

1. keep program database and configuration files in one place so backup is easy - if an application doesn't really provide the option to save config files in a user specified location then ensure to point your backup software to the config location and make a note of it. i say to try and save all your config stuff in one place simply so that you know you've done it but if you are keeping a note of things then the single location idea is just a convenience.

as an example:
i use dialogmove, the settings remain in the folder i've installed dialogmove to - so i backup the entire dialogmove folder as it's simple to do. maxthon allows you to save 'groups' of links which i want to backup along with all my other maxthon settings - so i backup the entire maxthon folder (just to be sure i don't miss something). on the other hand, i have my 'Surfulator' knowledge bases saved in a folder with other program database information such as my ACDSee database. all the databases get backed up in one go and i know where they all are.

2. colour code folders to indicate their 'status'. i might need to copy loads of stuff to disk - i might not want to do it immediately and so after a while i'll forget what i've copied and what i haven't, i'll forget who i've copied it for and whether i've copied it myself. maybe i'll not have made up my mind on what to do with a set of files so i'll just leave them where they are and colour code the folder so that i'm instantly reminded of its 'status' when i see it - the same applies to the copying or not copying of things - colour marking the folder lets me know instantly whether it's safe to delete as i've done everything i need to do with it and, more importantly, i know if it's already saved to disk. colour code also indicates whether it's a 'video' or an 'audio' or a 'whatever' folder.

3. make a note of what you've got installed in your operating system backups. it's a good idea to make a backup of your system after a clean install and before you've tampered with it in any way. this way you can 'reinstall' windows in about 2-3 minutes if you find that you run into trouble when setting up your hardware/drivers (maybe that isn't so much of a problem nowadays?). after you've got your system set with the drivers and maybe a few basic small applications installed then do another backup - this will be your 'personal' first zero time backup to resort to if you decide to start from scratch again. keep these two initial backups safe and after that you can do your typical backup jobs - but it will be helpful to make a note of what software you've installed that each backup contains.

4. if you've got a particularly deranged machine as mine then you'll find it useful to keep a note of what you did when setting the machine and software up. you'll then, hopefully, be able to determine where any conflicts are coming from and how to reverse or appease them.

i'm sure there are more 'sensible' things to do - that's what comes to mind immediately.

Goodsync is made by the Roboform people...
true.

the FileWare software isn't as advanced as i first thought. still might be enough for my needs though.

i recently posted in another thread, https://www.donation...ex.php?topic=10076.0, that i'm using GoodSync as it seemed like a good price for what it offered (using NetDrive to provide additional FTP synchronisation features).

As i'm still in the trial period for using GoodSync and i'm not entirely sure how many computers i'll want to synchronise i thought it worth searching for an even cheaper alternative.

i'm now using FileSync and FTPSync from 'Fileware' http://www.fileware.com/products.htm

there appears to be plenty of features provided by both apps - and for $15 each i've yet to see anything of such value. you can even try the programs free for as long as you wish - and make a payment when you are satisfied you'll be using the product on a typical basis.

of course, you don't necessarily need both apps. i'm just playing with both until i decide whether i'll keep using the NetDrive FTP functions currently on my system.

another thing... i'm kind of surprised that neither of these 'FileWare' programs have been mentioned elsewhere on the forum - the programs appear to have been around for quite a few years so i'd expect someone to be aware of them.

thanks, mwb1100.

but after finally doing a quick search on the forum i found this thread https://www.donation...dex.php?topic=7714.0

not decided what to do yet.

edit:
looks like 'GoodSync' http://www.goodsync.com/ matches my needs. it doesn't cost a lot and it will easily do what i need.

edit again:
GoodSync relies on windows built-in FTP capabilities as it doesn't do FTP itself (a bit lame there). but using 'NetDrive' provides a mapped drive for an FTP location so i'm using that.

not decided if i'll be keeping it yet. maybe SyncBackSE would make more sense to use but GoodSync still looks like the cheapest method - especially if paying for a couple or more licenses to sync files between several machines (not read the terms but i assume you need a license per machine).

i like the sound of jungledisk but it's probably more than i need...

can anyone recommend a simple ftp client that will automatically synchronise a few files for me when i shutdown the computer - and i suppose it would make sense if it also synchronises when i first log on to the machine.

i'm sure there must be a lot of utils that will almost do this but are there (m)any that will automatically check the files on the server with your local machine at machine startup and shutdown?

(i'll only be transferring small files. i just want it to be automatic so i can leave it running and forget about it.)

Armando, thanks for reminding me about Csikszentmihalyi. i read 'flow' many years ago and i found it to be one of those defining books that can provide a paradigm shift with how you view the world. unfortunately i can't remember much about it as it was passed on to someone else straight after reading it - who then passed it on again, etc.

reading the bits you've quoted makes me realise i must have forgotten almost everything that was said. i was also working in an absolutely soul destroying job at the time so i think i found the idea of 'flow' a bit too much of a luxury that wasn't attainable for the majority. i probably just missunderstood the argument at the time as i tend to believe in 'flow' nowadays.
1848
good point. anything that suggests a reduction of social interaction is automatically considered a bad thing (well, i suppose research shows it's unhealthy to be unsociable - i wonder if any research has been done to show how wonderful being a loner is).
1849
i can't call myself a programmer, but i find almost everything i do on the computer can match the description at the top of this page. so i'd agree that it's not just programming that appeals to perferctionist/compulsive/obsessive types - it's the computer in general.

AOL must have got wind of the hack or maybe Kaspersky notified AOL after noticing hits on the server that was supposed to service AOL's program.. anyway, i'll let you know if i come across something..
thanks
