General Software Discussion / Re: have you tried mind maps?
« Last post by rjbull on February 24, 2010, 04:23 PM »
i sort of got into using mind maps many years ago after reading a few books by Tony Buzan http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tony_Buzan.
I did an evening class recently.  The tutor seemed keen on mind maps, but it's something I'd never done because I was borne too soon  ;)  I came across one of Tony Buzan's books in the library and flipped through it.  It looked like he was defining new jargon to use in describing mind maps, which made me think it could easily end up as a groupie ghetto.  Also it looked like you had to be quite artistic with broad-tipped coloured markers.  So, I'd be interested in hearing if anyone has any further thoughts on this topic?
after creating a few i didn't find it helped a great deal.
That's rather what I was concerned about.
like brotherS, i didn't find that they changed my life - though, Tony Buzan gave me the impression that they would.

Start - Control Panel - Windows Firewall
OK, thanks, done that now - but, Windows Firewall was turned OFF, because I was using Online-Armor.  I think OA's default is to turn Windows Firewall OFF when it's on itself, and to turn Windows Firewall back on if OA is turned off.  No Internet access change, and as Windows Firewall was off wasn't really expecting one, unless I need to reboot.  Getting late (for me) so I'll return to the struggle tomorrow (actually, it's BE tomorrow local time in ten minutes, but I meant a bit longer than that...).

Do you mean Windows Defender?  If so, I can't see either in its lists.

General Software Discussion / Capturing Vista Home Premium error message box text
« Last post by rjbull on February 23, 2010, 05:15 PM »
Some versions of Windows let you send the text in error message boxes to the clipboard just by focussing the box and pressing Ctrl-C.  Earlier Windows versions were served by Thyante Software's CopyMessageBox, which you could set to make both a screenshot and extract the text. Last time I tried, CopyMessageBox didn't seem to extract text on Vista Home Premium, though it did keep screenshots.

Does anyone know a way to capture such text, please? HyperSnap can do it by TextSnap, but is there an easier way?  (Yes, I know, this is Windows).

General Software Discussion / Vista blocking some Internet access
« Last post by rjbull on February 23, 2010, 05:02 PM »
My laptop has the misfortune to be lumbered with Vista Home Premium.  I've been looking at NoteFrog, and it thinks I have no Internet connection.  I also asked HippoEdit to check its Internet version: it said "Connection to Internet could not be established!"

I was running in a user account.  When I changed to the admin account, both worked, Internet connection was made.  But I've also set permissions on both programs to give full control to the user account.  So why can't they access the Internet?  I checked my firewall, Online-Armor, and WinPatrol Plus, and they don't list either program (as far as I can see).

What do I have to do to make my computer do what I tell it to do?

One of the old collections of Van Vogt (SF writer from way back, once famous for writing 'Slan'). I'm away from home right now, so I can't look in my read-and-going-to-pass-it-on box to check the title, but I think it was either 'Destination: Universe!' or 'The Book of Van Vogt'.

General Software Discussion / Re: How to encrypt a USB drive without admin rights?
« Last post by rjbull on February 20, 2010, 11:23 AM »
(1) prevent average users accessing payware programs on my USB key, (2) prevent same accessing certain files, and (3) should I lose the key, or forget and leave it behind,
For (1) and (2), isn't the problem with using a encrypted container that once you have entered the passphrase everything in it will be decrypted and accessible?
True, but, there has to be some balance between security and accessibility if I'm going to use a USB key at all.
If you wander away from the computer, (eg. to look at a reference book), then anyone will be able to access what's on it until you return, (or nick it).
True again, but see above: and I'm hoping that if anyone does steal it, they won't be able to access it ever again because they won't know the password.  That is, I'm assuming that if they plug it into another PC, the encryption will hold.  Also I'm assuming that one can set a timeout, so that if I don't access it for a while, I'd have to re-enter the password.  I do that with KeePass, even at home.
I think the main problem is (3) for which there is a simple solution: go to a hardware shop, buy one of those retractable key chains, attach it to your belt/pants and the flash drive.  Job Done!  :D
I hadn't thought of that  :)  Not sure how practical it is, though; it would tie me to the computer as well.  Unless you have a chain long enough to reach to the toilet at the other end of the corridor  ;)
you're restricted to using a flash drive with always-on hardware encryption.
If I read him right, f0dder seems to rule those out.

Thanks for the suggestions.  I should have thought out what I wanted a bit better, though your posts are helping me do that.  I occasionally use the USB key at college and the public library.  I'm not really expecting industrial-strength security.  I want to (1) prevent average users accessing payware programs on my USB key, (2) prevent same accessing certain files, and (3) should I lose the key, or forget and leave it behind, plugged into a machine (mine are all on cables, so they're more obvious than usual), then no-one, not even a sysadmin (who hadn't already sniffed the password) could access any secure area.  That seems to mean I'd be better off with a TrueCrypt-type secure container to stop (1) and (3) while still making the programs accessible to me.  For (2) I could use AxCrypt or equivalent, but even then it would (probably) be a pain while doing things like digital photography evening class where I want to access lots of files, so an encrypted container would still be best.  Ideally it would lock itself after a given period of inactivity.

I suppose I should add the obvious - I don't usually have admin rights on the PCs I would in these situations be using.

Like superboyac I use RoboForm, and KeePass, and one of my MemPad files is also encrypted using Windows' built-in system.  I could leave those outside the container.

Found two more not mentioned above:  Wondershare USB Drive Encryption and WinEncrypt.  I don't know anything about them.

I notice that some encryption programs are fairly expensive.  The ones that have free and payware versions seem to limit the container size in the free version as an incentive to upgrade.  Rohos, for example, is 2GB.  But that seems quite a bit on a USB drive which isn't enormous anyway.

General Software Discussion / How to encrypt a USB drive without admin rights?
« Last post by rjbull on February 18, 2010, 04:16 PM »
Does anyone know a way to encrypt a USB drive, without having to have admin rights to read it again?  As far as I can see, TrueCrypt only works if you either have admin privileges, or if TrueCrypt is already installed on the host machine.  In other words, TrueCrypt isn't truly "portable" as you can't guarantee either situation in a college or library, say.  The TrueCrypt docs point out that it has to install a device driver, hence the need for installation rights, and that admins can "see" what you've been typing, including your passwords.  In fact I'm more interested in securing the drive against students and casual users rather than admins gone to the bad.  I doubt I'd outwit those anyway...

By contrast, AxCrypt, from reading their Web site, seems to work file by file, though at least they offer a portable decrypter.  I'd rather encrypt the whole volume in one go.  Is there a reasonably easy way to do this, please?

Thanks...

Is portable version that can be installed on U3 smart drive only an appropriate solution?
I'd rather have a version that can run from any USB drive, not just U3.

The Assistive software works, maybe slight overkill for my needs.

  • Lately I've been more interested in portable applications, and you can't guarantee .NET is installed (yet)

Support for replacing of several lines is not currently in the plans. The primary aim of this product is to "Find" and not replace, so i'm not going to enhance the replace capabilities (maybe i'll create a separate product for this purposes).
Before you set out to make a tool to replace multiple strings in one pass, take a look at HandyFile Find and Replace (HFFR)Text Workbench (various versions, payware) or BK ReplaceEm (freeware).  Not trying to put you off, but as it isn't really on your radar anyway, just to say there are good tools for the task out there already and why reinvent the wheel.  On the other hand, your multiple searches on tabs is unusual, and the filtering looks interesting.  Like Abterix I'd like to see a portable version.

I really enjoy donationcoder.com, but even here I do not know many people.
Same here, but I also think that in a sense there aren't all that many people to know.  Have you noticed how many posts seem to come from a relatively small pool of people, versus the total number of members, 203,251 at the time of writing?  I.e, that most of the posts are from familiar names?
