General Software Discussion / Re: Taskbar and windows 8.1
« Last post by MilesAhead on July 14, 2015, 04:19 PM »
@Contro,
trying to use a taskbar of that height, on a laptop with 1366x768 is not realistic, in my opinion. I think it would be impossible to avoid problems with it.
Would you consider putting your taskbar on the side, if you really want to have it always on display (I havent done this myself so dont know how well it works on Windows 8).

I am using a triple height taskbar myself.  Works fine.  The issue I could see would be programs with a non-sizable window that expect to have more height to work with.  But I haven't run into one of those in some time.

In fact MoveIt should get the window small enough to get at the edges to resize it.  I changed it so you can hold down the middle mouse button anywhere on a window.  It does not have to be on caption bar anymore.

Contro get the newest MoveIt and hold down middle mouse button on a window and press the letter 'c' to resize inside the Work Area.  Disable Taskbar AutoHide is needed for MoveIt to get the work area size(which is what you use anyway like me.)

Set the taskbar to autohide?

EDIT// I see Miles has that covered already

These 2 links should get you started

http://www.sevenforu...ccount-turn-off.html

http://www.sevenforu...-enable-disable.html

Once you are the built in administrator, if you really do not want anyone else to be able to install software or change settings, delete all the regular user accounts and enable the Guest account.  Anyone will be able to use the machine.  But they won't be able to install anything or have customized user settings.  They would be able to run programs installed for All Users like web browsers, notepad or whatever you install for All Users etc..

Or without installing anything.. if you have Snap enabled press Winkey Left Arrow.  That should put the window inside the work area on the left half of the screen.  Then you can get the mouse to the corner.

Alternatively set Taskbar AutoHide to enabled(which I don't like either.  But it's an option.)

Even if Windows 10 is a success, Windows 13 will still be doomed. At least with that number.

They will skip it, of course  :D

Didn't you hear?  This is the last version of Windows.  No triskaidekaphobia, no worries.  :)

I installed the 18.0.0.209 released today for Firefox.  Also my chrome updated automagically to the same version.  I did not see the word "exploit" in the change log though.

It's odd that this chap recommends doing away with flash (coincidence that it appears at same time you post here?):
http://www.techsuppo...ing-flash-player.htm
Can html5 replace it 100%?
Not on ESPN3.  That is my main concern.  They allow free access if you are on an .edu domain.  That's the only way I get to see Tennis.  Although last year the US Open had free streaming live on 7 courts.  I hope they repeat it this year.

BTW, did you try FF beta before going to extremes with Nightly?

No, I wanted to get as much HTML5 as they had.  Turns out these are solid as a rock.. so far.  I got lucky it seems.

Classic T.R. is cool. Just hope it doesn't break up along the way like many other extensions deemed useful.

A lot of them will break when they enforce this signing crap.  It really annoys me how they all fall into lockstep.  Somebody should bring a court case so that they can only refuse signing if they can prove the extension is malicious.  Right now if they don't like it is all that is required to reject it.

"Flash issues" you say?
Having just re-installed my laptop, can't say i've noticed any particular hic with stable.

It could be my GPU isn't up to snuff.  I may not have looked at the CPU usage while playing a vid until I noticed my Laptop hanging at 99% charge for 1/2 hour while plugged in running chrome.  Then I started to pay attention.

Might give that Nightly Build a spin.
If my computer breaks, it's all your fault MilesAhead!  :P

Heh heh.  It is dangerous.  I started messing around with Chromium portable snapshots and it took me 2  years to leave them alone.  :)

I use classic theme restorer extension.  Otherwise I cannot read the tab titles as I have Glass enabled.  I like Glass but I hate wasting all that space with the ribbon and just a chunk of Glass sitting there.  I used to have a great dark blue theme with white text on Vista and W7.  I forget the name of it though.

Latest 39 stable is doing good for me.

I wouldn't be looking around if flash wasn't hogging the machine.  Although this x64 build is the smoothest x64 that said "Firefox" on it that I have tried so far.  It seems just as solid as 39.0 32 bit.

Hi all,
in my PC I see everything fine but in three cases I see a rather dark window: most of video by Youtube, most of video by the player, the windows of certain programs that show a bad combination of colors (for example gray characters on a black background).
To see correctly those windows I must increase the brightness of the monitor and of course I must decrease it when I have finished.

I don't understand why such double behaviour of my system.

Is my graphic card (Intel G41) or its driver a horrid product?

I don't know about the driver.  But it mentions "overlay" in this paper:

Trying WOT but I cannot get it to show the indicator next to the address bar.  Which kind of limits the utility.  I turned Classic Theme Restorer off and remove buttons from the Toolbar.  Nothing seems to work.

I am running FF 39, Cyberfox 39, and 32 and 64 bit FF nightly builds.  Not one will show the WOT indicator except in search results.

Edit: Never mind.  I had to drag the button on manually using Customize.

General Software Discussion / Firefox Nightly Builds : Windows
« Last post by MilesAhead on July 13, 2015, 07:13 AM »
I have been using the 32 bit Firefox Nightly Build for Windows for a few days.  So far everything works fine.  So this morning I figured what the hell and installed the x64 version.  So far so good.

It picks up all the bookmarks and extensions from an installed Firefox if you already have one.  It installs in the folder Nightly and can be removed without hosing your stable FF installation.

The difference I see when loading tabs in the x64 version I get a tiny spinning wheel until the page fills in, rather than the one about an inch in diameter the 32 bit was using.  It seems to fill in tabs a bit faster than the 32 bit also.

I haven't noticed any extensions not working or anything unusual.

Haven't seen an additional update yet

You would think they would backtrack to an old version without the vulnerability in the interim.. if there is one. And let us know what version it is.

If you select Never Activate in plugins settings for FF that should do it I would hope.  Chrome may make it a bit harder to get at the setting.  I think you have to enter "chrome://plugins/" in the address bar.

Mustang browser for Windows comes with PepperFlash 17.x OOTB.  If it is vulnerable too I do not know.

[off-topic]

Speaking of which I have to see if the Men's Singles [tennis] Final is still ongoing.  :)

you reminded me of it the other day
I'm watching (not live) via this YT channel. There's two sets up there so far...

If you are enjoying I won't spoil the men's match.  I watched the Serena final yesterday.  I bet Stephie Graf is sticking pins is wax effigies about now.  If Serena wins the US Open singles she will tie Stephie at 22 major singles championships and also have the calendar slam.  I don't know why anyone cares if you winn all 4 in the same calendar year.  But they make a stat out of everything now.  :)

I'm in IE11 on 7pro x64 ... And after literally years -(like since 2007)- it just decided to up and pull the Green Screen crap on me. VCard is an ATI Radeon HD 4850 Driver v8.920.0.0 dated 11/9/2011 - Was running fine since the beginning...and just went locked up green on Flash Players.

*Shrug* Maybe I'm overdue on a new box.. :-\

As much video as I converted and messed with I still don't understand the stuff.  I have a VLC Firefox Plugin.  But it never seems to do anything.  I have around 10 browers installed.  I go to a site with video and click the link.  Nothing happens.  I keep bringing up browsers until one of them kicks it off.  I don't remember things being quite this weird once Windows became NT based..  :)

As an aside: WTF did they do to flash that suddenly turned it into a seizure prone nightmare??

I don't know.  One thing I did see weird is at times Windows 8 Task Manager itself seems to use 40% CPU.  I brought up Avira free TM and it only shows itself using maybe 2.9%.  At least the video seems to be working well in FF nightly.  I was able to watch several Wimbledon matches on ESPN3 for free.

Speaking of which I have to see if the Men's Singles Final is still ongoing.  :)

If software blogs only wrote about software when it was new we would all be using buggy new crap instead of the stuff that has proven its worth over time.  :-\

A good reason to keep links to sites like Last Free Version and Old Versions etc..

I wish they would patch using 28% CPU just to show video.  Granted my GPU probably doesn't qualify for hw accel. but still.  I have been trying to use Pepper Flash, and other alternatives but I can't get any of them to work on Windows except on Youtube.  ESPN3 forget it.  I'll be glad when Flash is cut out altogether.

Yay. Not "Version 39"

Speaking of which I am on Firefox Nightly 42.0a1 (2015-07-09) right now.  Not just to be latest and greatest.  I am trying to find something that lets me watch flash video without pegging the CPU.  So far there really isn't a substitute that works on ESPN3 to watch Wimbledon.  But with this Nightly I seem to be able to keep it down to around 50% without closing all my Tray Hotkey thingies.  I have to assume the GPU in this Laptop is just a conversation piece.  Sure doesn't seem like any hw accel is happening here.  :)

So far this Nightly seems as stable as FF 39.  I hate it because every time I try a new FF it seems snappy for the first 2 weeks.  It must be starting with a new data folder.  Then it bogs down to just about the same speed as the last one I installed.
