JGPaiva's GridMove and Ahk Tools / Re: GridMove Grid Making Tutorial

(and I didn't like the extra buttons)
Interesting.. That's the thing i like gridvista more than gridmove :)

btw. I've read that you're in the process of converting the existing hardcoded grids to
.grid files - do you by any chance need help with that?
Yes, i am.. IIRC, only 2 of them aren't yet .grid files, and the most work would be at code level, but yes, i'd appreciate some help with it :)

Living Room / Re: log users off at a certain time using task scheduler
« Last post by jgpaiva on January 27, 2008, 06:23 PM »
It sure is doable, so much so that it's done! :)

So, it only has 2 arguments (which are mandatory): timeout (in seconds) and message.

Example:
logoffin.exe 120 "the computer will logoff in 2 minutes"

There's a minor quirk: it won't log off until the messagebox is closed. As a workaround, i added a timeout of 30 seconds to the messagebox, thus, the minimum time that it guarantees the computer will be logged off is 30 seconds.

hi excogitation!
Welcome to the forum.

Actually, i already made an atempt at a grid-making utility, but unfortunatelly, it became even more complicated than doing it by hand and i dropped it...

This really isn't an easy process, but making a gridcreator quite a complicated project. I intend to do it sometime in the future, but not right now.. The next step is to update the help file to a decent and more complete format.

Ok, now i understand.
It's a shame that the default "shutdown" utility that comes with windows doesn't allow you to logoff and have a timeout.

There are a few shutdown utilities that i'm sure are able to do this...

What exactly would you like to do? have the system display a message indicating that the computer will log of in X minutes, right?

Now i'm confused... What OS do you have?

My win xp pro sp2 doesn't have the -m switch, and the -c switch is for adding a comment to the shutdown dialog...

app: wise comments, as always. I also think that linking the probabilities of winning with the number of posts would be VERY unfair.

Right now, i think the prize optimizer works very well...

Thanks a lot!!  :greenclp: :greenclp: :greenclp:

Now... I just need to get some courage to start working on GridMove's new help file ;)

Through PM, nogojoe asked for a modification of this program to open the most recent dated folder, so, here it is.
Notice that it doesn't stop looking, so, if you don't have any folder that matches the dd-MM-yyyy format, it will go into an infinite loop.

General Software Discussion / Re: Don’t save in Office 2007's MS-OOXML format!
« Last post by jgpaiva on January 27, 2008, 08:14 AM »
It's good to know about this!

Honestly, i think MS would never leave backwards compatibility, though. Thus, if you're using MS's office, and will be using office in the future, you're always safe.

The comment about not being able to open it with any other word processor in the future is valid, though...

I think the "save in .doc" solution also isn't perfect: very often i save stuff in .doc and it looks completelly different in OO (and vice-versa). And as they mention, saving with ODF isn't a solution either because the same thing happens.

I was talking about dolphin, the one tested in the review.

Krusader looks very good, i just gave it a go, and i might get used to it.
I prefer a dual-pane file explorer, opposed to a norton commander file explorer, though. Still, on my computer (which has gnome and not kde), krusader's keyboard navigation failed way too many times for my tastes (sometimes the arrows or the enter key wouldn't change the selection or open the selected folders, and similar things).

They say "the license does not apply to users developing software for a non-windows platform". What does that mean? That the code is unlicensed when you're working ouside the windows platform and you can do whatever you want with it? :)

I have already wished you a happy birthday April, so let me be the first one to wish you an early happy birthday for next year.  :P
In america, isn't that a superstition about wishing people happy birthday early? Around here, it's said to bring bad luck.
(i'm not superstitious, i only got curious :P)

From what i understood from the review, the taskbar was removed, and replaced with a Plasma widget. The problem is that it's incomplete and not working correctly :)

General Software Discussion / Re: Attention Mod

I also use the same method as f0dder, check every thread through the "unread topics".
Thus, something like this would be sort of redundant for me, since someone would be calling me to a thread that i already have or will read.
App's comments were exactly what i thought the first time i read this, some mod like this would sort of eliminate the "plausible deniability" which can be useful in some situations.

Imagine this situation:
Someone opens a new thread on coding snacks that i find too complex/impossible to do. I don't answer, as i wouldn't add anything interesting other than a "sorry, i can't do it" comment.
Then, if someone comes and says "hey, i can't do it, but maybe jgpaiva can do it?", then i have to reply and say "no, i can't do it".
Then, we have 2 replys saying "can't be done", and someone who actually could do it might be intimidated, or might think that it's being solved already (if he only noticed that it already had replys and didn't read them).

Another situation is where i keep some coding snacks unanswered, but keep the thread open on opera (opera is like my online todo list, the open tabs are kept open through sessions and keep the stuff i'm supposed to do in the future), so that if i have time, i'll do it in the future or if i don't, i ditch it. This system would force me to say "oh, i think i might do this", and then i'd feel bad if i didn't.

See what i mean?

But i'm very interested in that tool you mentioned in your post!
Is it specific of your laptop?

  • direct me to the command(s) for sending a string to the filename text box in the Windows save box.
  • Suggest where I might find examples.

app: if you have other keyboards, you probably should test with one of those, as that sounds more like hardware problem (if i understood correctly, f1 isn't working in any program, right?)
