General Software Discussion / Re: looking for...a wiki?

I second wetpaint. It's probably the most popular simple to use online wiki out there...but...I don't know that is what the OP is looking for. I'm not even sure he's still looking at this thread because it's been 10 days since he last replied.

The key here is to look for Chrome's second main beta release. Otherwise we're still arguing the same points on the same old beta Chrome.

Have you tried all-weather paper?  There are a lot of products out there.  For the odd short reminder I have a chinagraph pencil in the shower (aka grease pencil or wax pencil) and write on directly onto the wall - it cleans off perfectly.

I've heard of the paper but I really didn't feel like they were an affordable option especially for short note taking but a chinagraph pencil, there's something I haven't heard of before. What are the things to look out for when buying such a pencil?

Thanks for the info. Yeah, I think that's the key difference since I don't plan to use it for instant messengers.

If you don't mind me asking, how or why do you use GridMove on a 14' screen?

Windows management program have always eluded me even from the days of tinkering with Opera's cascade and grid formation views. I just find it too small and I'm also surprised that this program is good enough on a 20' because when I tried the monitor, it didn't even feel like it can handle anything more than two maximized windows so it seems very unlikely to me to be suitable for even that size but this could be a case of intention muddling my viewpoints because you might be just using it to arrange your smaller windowed programs and not trying to fit it with a browser or a notetaker and I'm thinking of opening several notepads inserted within each view to create a 4 x 4 grid lay-out on top of a 4 x 4 grid on top of a 4 x 4 grid.

Woah man, very nice! I'm jealous. Always wanted a space large enough to host a library but I couldn't afford it.

Yeah, I can't believe I missed Storybook also because I've read that topic before. I think it was the java software that gave me amnesia but the app is surprisingly fast at least when I tried the sample but it looks like a jazzed up ywriter4 so I ended up back to it.

If sharing suites might help, here's mine currently:

Currently considering:

Storyweaver and Dramatica Pro just like I wrote in my first impressions

Currently trying to replace:

YeahWrite which replaced MS Word for me both due to speed and the fact that the color lay-out and portability makes my text flow. At times it even beats Q10 for jump starting on a story because I could just spend hours looking at the non-traditional and less strain on the eyes screen.

Incollector for snippets collecting. It might not replace EverNote for web capturing but the box based and tag based design feels more comfortable to me than the toilet paper design or sticky notes design of other applications.

Compendium for outlining. Tree-based hierarchies just don't do it for me. I feel more at home with a structure I can pattern myself.

Q10 for the nostalgia and the memories typewriting sounds give me.

ywriter4 in case I ever need to re-organize in a rigid structural way.

and finally the ubook reader for the final "read aloud" test.

Coincidentally this also functions as my productivity suite and notetaking suite currently. I know many of these are repeated points but I thought maybe posting this could help spell out better to people of what I need and the type of person that I am.

I tried a 20 inches plus monitor once and I returned to my 17 inch (or is this 19) because I couldn't handle working outside maximized mode but lately I've been looking for a grid over grid program but couldn't find any so I was wondering if this was the program that would allow me to do something like this by combining it with a text editor.

From this topic.

Is there a to do list/notetaker aimed at the “important but not urgent” “Important but urgent” “not important and not urgent” and “not important and urgent” system? I know that this can be done on paper but I’m looking for something like a grid over grid software.

Ex. You create 4 full squares with entries fitting each of these criteria on a specific category but then it zooms out and scales off and handles all your entries into another box.

Living Room / Re: Would you surf porn in a public space?
« Last post by Paul Keith on September 12, 2008, 07:20 PM »
Yes but only because I read mostly adult fiction rather than browse for images. At the worse, you can find me skipping through the sex scenes of an English translated Doujn like I was bored and looking for a plot. I guess that's what gives me the courage if I ever have to do it. I'd probably be too busy either recommending what I'm reading to any viewer for the story or too busy to tell them to skip the title if they ever complained.

Living Room / REQUEST: List your Motivational Music Videos Here
« Last post by Paul Keith on September 12, 2008, 06:38 PM »
I'm not really sure if this topic really belongs here but lately I found I've been visiting this forum more often than not so I decided this was either the site to make this thread or never ever ever at all. My first line of sanity check was the fact that this forum hosts PopUp Wisdom which is just one of those holy grail of softwares as far as I'm concerned and so I felt there must be people here who appreciate the art of viewing quotes and to me, motivational music videos are like quotes. They don't really need to get you into the mood but like healthy junk foods for the brain, they...extract something special and you just don't ever get sick of them. Of course at the same time, it really depends on a person's taste as you will see here where all the videos I'm going to share with you are Anime related. These aren't random Anime videos though, I guess my taste just cater towards Animes because I'm not that interested in music and yes, I've tried many of the classics but the sounds that I often empathize with often happen to be Anime vids for some reason.

This collection was made when someone in another thread was feeling down and someone replied with the "Eye of the Tiger" video which gave me the idea to collect all these past videos I like best through YouPlayer and making a playlist out of it but I ended up never posting the reply. The act came with benefits though as for the first time, I have something I can concretely call a playlist under the folder "Motivational Music Videos" and in a way it became a genre all it's own for me out of these gaping hole left by my lack of connection towards all genres (though I do chance from time to time, music I like from each genre but never A genre)

Those two are the only ones I have so far but hopefully with your contributions, I can add more to these.

I do have one other video to the playlist but this is less of a music video and more of a biographical account of one of my favorite games:

...and finally a bunch of intro videos from some of my favorite animes.

There's one other song but I could only find the Japanese version of the intro which I found inferior to the English version which is Unseen by Aya Hiroshige and no, this is not a secret anime topic in disguise and yes, I do know I could probably get more AMV recommendations from an anime forum but it's not about that. Believe me, if I could find a non-Anime Music Video that can transport me through the emotions these videos make me feel, I would. It's about diversity and it could be in any forum, I just prefer this one. Besides, I don't really have the courage nor the patience to register to each anime forums one by one to spot where Naruto and Inu Yasha fans don't litter around.

Hmm... it must work differently. I swear when I tried the gnome workspace switcher, I needed to add 4 to it's 4 panels to achieve something that exceeds it's max panel ability resulting in tons of square boxes...

Hmm... I didn't know Firefox can do this. I never found the feature but it reminded me how in Opera, I often press shift+g (set to gray background) and shift+F11 (set to cellphone view) and that works for most sites not Web 2.0 for a clean minimalistic view of the contents.

I'm...confused but this might be what you're looking for.

TeaTimer (you're chained to Opera though)
http://widgets.opera.com/widget/6897/

WorkRave (RSI helper but you have the option to configure it to alert you to a preset time)
http://www.workrave.com/welcome/

Might be also possible to do this using a TimeBoxing software. (Didn't try this so use at your own risk. I only posted the first link I found in Google)

I realize this is the preferred color scheme for most gaming sites, for example - perhaps to do with the cool grungey feel they like to elicit, so maybe it's culture-bound to a degree, no matter.

Not to defend all gamers but we love Gamefaqs blue and white theme before CNN ruined it for us with their own take on the whole thing man. You're not going to see many people yearning for the old green and black theme that's for sure.

Ahh, yes. I finally see what you mean. It doesn't bother me that much but yes, I agree that is convenient.

I guess the reason why it never struck me because I often am so frustrated at the zoom level of my browser that I often just zoom it so I don't really get the benefit of the screen estate. I also am used to tagging an rss entry to read later so the extra screen space is wasted on me because I'm too busy marking a forum topic as something to be read later on.

Maybe somebody who is a wiki-wonk could start a new thread to try and enlighten those of us who frankly admit to being clueless.

Yeah, I second that. Would be well appreciated to see a screencast that expands beyond this video.

BTW: I wanted to say 'paradigm' instead of concept - but I'd probably be dragged out behind DC headquarters and stoned to death with dead hard drives for uttering that word.

Haha, sounds like a great story to tell the kids.

Update:

I still haven't begun any new reorganizing as the whole new format's really making me procrastinate. Makes me wonder how programmers could handle making an entire site as just seeing that one BBCode page for just an hour is driving me nuts.

Anyways, I'm just writing this here in case anyone knows of a simple solution because I'm back to the dark days of when I was searching for a PIM (only this time I'm really looking for a PIM than a notetaker) and the more I move, the more I sink into the quicksand of features and my search for an offline Diigo has morphed back into looking for an app that combines the web capturing capabilities of Surfulater/EverNote/Scrapbook FF along with their highlight and annotation capabilities combined with the features of IdeaMason (who knew that program was hidden in a topic about diaries) and a way to print the data within them into a self formatted book for easy reading. (so yeah, it's also technically a novel writing software now.)

Frankly, I'm not sure if a program like that exists so I'm trying to stay the course of an offline Diigo but if you guys have anymore ideas even if they're through combining several different programs, please reply.

One MAJOR caveat with Sony is their software. They're DRM freaks so their software has some issues when you want to burn files to CD. I guess they're worried about people recording a Brittany Spears concert. You can burn to CD, but it's a major pain.

You also MUST use their software to access recordings on the device. That would have been a showstopper for me if I knew about it beforehand. Unlike a friend's Olympus, this Sony doesn't come up on your PC as a mass storage USB device. So you can't just drag and drop files. Still, for twenty-five bucks I can't really complain. Too much anyway.

Yeah, I read this review before switching over to preferring Olympus.

As far as searching, I'd suggest getting one of those tall outdoorsy redhead types. Got me one of those and never regretted it. Look for versatility and performance. The particular model I've have is perfectly at home either in an English saddle, or slamming out some serious blues on her Fender Strat. Goes from zero to Stevie Ray Vaughan in under four seconds flat!

Check what's available in your area. Highly recommended!

Haha. Unfortunately we don't get much redheads here. A blonde is rare enough but advise taken into consideration.

Also you could also use a special folder if you're more into launchers like Launchy. It can also be extra convenient due to the fact that not only do you have a cleaner desktop but when you can remember the specific file you want to open, as long as it's indexed, it's going to be instantly opened without the need for a mouse click.

On a side note, is there an application like this for Linux.

Well, it's not quite what you're looking for but I used AutoPatcher instead to get rid of the problem.

Thanks for the heads up. It's a good basic application marred by the fact that it's Windows only, not lightweight enough and lacking in keyboard shortcuts and came at a time when these options aren't just enough for many people. (Though really it's sufficient but there are ton of basic apps like these that it's easily going to be overlooked.)

The author looks like they really know how to make a simple and elegant user interface though. Hopefully they end up making something better if not being demotivated to update this program further.

I read the links tomos but I still don't get it. Saying it's not an outliner only confused me but it could be because I'm not sure whether the text there refers it to being not an outliner = not a notetaker or not an outliner = not tree-based hierarchy like.

Some of the core issues that confuse me with it are:

-The lack of specific and concrete samples
-The lack of specific and concrete samples WHILE seeing someone access it after a long time has passed

As for being confusing, I don't know if you're familiar with Tomboy Notes which is pre-installed at least in Linux Mint by default but if Wikidpad is confusing I recommend trying that one out because it doesn't require any syntax. You just set a link and basically you can move towards the next page of an article per se that normally wouldn't be the next page.

It can be also used as a novel writing software which is probably why ywriter4 was also recommended. In essence, it's very much Wikipedia for yourself.

Sorry, if you know this already. I'm not sure if you wanted to know about the program, didn't really care for the program or were referring to some of the advanced stuff within the program which I also don't know because I never tried it long enough.

Another similar example but different approach to Wiki-style notetaking is found within Compendium. An aspect which it calls transclusive linking. The core idea is basically you can paste a section into another section and have the information sync between it. The benefit is basically an item that can be on two folders without needing to be organized through tag filtering thus the convenience of a more orthodox approach to information accessing.

Well, the color would be easy enough to change, although it is really not a problem.
The dpreview board is the most visited photography site on the web - I believe the elegance of their forum script, and the quick overview it allows over the entire thread, is the biggest reason for this success. The other site content is absolute average.
The overview over the forum is so good that it does not need most of the features that clutter other systems.

Could you point out where the overview excels? I'm not disagreeing with you but I just can't see it. At best what I can see different from it from a quick skim is that it looks like Google Groups tweaked to look like a forum.

By chat do you mean a one-on-one private chat? Because there's always the IRQ channel, don't ya know!

This is one of the sample link but it can be slow to load.

The general idea is like IRC except recorded which is achieved through intense amounts of use with AJAX (biggest reason why the site can be slow) so it needs to be optimized but the end result would be like getting twitter results within your forum post if you replace the twitter users with the chat visitors that converse in DC.
