40Hz: I have SoftCAT from the same developer and I love it - very nicely done program and also a helpful developer to boot.

I'll have to take a look at his book and movie collection applications.

Thanks!

As far as I know you can't use a v6 license for v5. If the program doesn't do the job, you should probably ask for a refund. Many things can and have been said about Collectorz.com, but they're pretty quick giving refunds to unhappy customers.

I too think the v5 was far better than the current version, especially since I could actually search the Norwegian National Library, which was very useful for me! The decision to drop pre-ISBN books in their database is pretty aweful, although at least they're not closing the door on a solution. I'll be very surprised if they really succeed with their new BoC and MoC strategy. At least I have lifetime licenses for both as well as for Music Collector... :-[

Thanks for the advice. Guess I'll go ask for a refund then, because this program has caused me literally hours to get only about 50 of my books into it - and they're not even complete. Ridiculous!

Thanks again.

I have a paid Fastmail account that allows me to create as many as 30 "aliases", additional email addresses that refer back to my main account. I try to never use my primary email address for general distribution. Instead I create aliases that I use for different reasons. A few were created specifically for situations like this.  :)

Of course I also have a $9.95 Spamex account. That allows my to create up to 500 disposable email addresses per year. I can give out a Spamex address and any replies/spam etc. to that address goes directly to Spamex, who then passes it along to me. The sender has no way of finding out my true email address, and I can also send messages to them again using that same address. It is worth more than the actual cost IMO!

v5 does a better job that v6.  I don't know about non-US ISBNs, as most of our books are US versions.

As I understand, V5 had a lot of different databases available for searching, including non-USA sites. I'm trying to find out if I can use my V6 license on V5.

Thanks!

General Software Discussion / Collectorz.com Book Collector 6
« Last post by J-Mac on December 10, 2008, 09:08 PM »
Anyone here using Book Collector V.6 from Collectorz.com?

I just purchased this new version last month. I already own both Movie and Music Collector Pro but this is the first version of Book Collector I've used. Unfortunately this version underwent a similar database surgery as the latest version of Movie Collector. You don’t get any choices as to where you get the details about the books you add; all goes through a central database at Collectorz.com. Also only books with US ISBN numbers can be automatically added. That of course eliminates most older books and specialty books, which is disappointing in itself.

But worse yet is the fact that a LOT of books simply are not found, even though they are easy to find on Amazon.com. After receiving a ton of support emails and a high number of forum posts about this, the CEO there, Alwin, recently released a build (6.3) that supposedly fixes a major bug he found. Of course, as is usually his style, this was revealed only after making a number of snide and sarcastic remarks on the forum to users having issues.

Today I installed Book Collector on my notebook so that I could stop lugging piles of books to my office for input using the Cuecat scanner. With the notebook I can bring the application and scanner to the books, wherever they are in my house. But once again, it just isn't working. the UPC barcodes on almost all my books do not match the ISBN numbers. The ISBN number is encoded in the barcodes, but Book Collector apparently reads them as scanned and rejects them as not be recognized ISBN numbers. Furthermore, more than half of my books are not getting cover images, and many are not even getting basic information, like the author's name!

I downloaded the previous version from the Collectorz.com web site. Does anyone here know if that was better than this current junk? I could just install it and try all over, but if it not much better than this stinker they recently released, I don’t even want to bother. I'd rather use another product altogether.

Thanks!

Sorry - I didn't even comment of Alwin's slight capitulation and decision to use Amazon for data missing from his own database. That is not much better of a solution, as Amazon hardly has any more info about the DVDs than the Collectorz.com database has. Amazon also offers only the front covers and also offers little detail. Plus, Movie Collector has NEVER utilized Amazon's meager episode details. Don’t know why but it has always omitted that for as long as I have used it - which is only about a year.

As for the homethreaterinfo.com data, that is also just very basic data - no real details there.

It would still be easier to use both simple and advanced searches. There are most likely other reasons they are doing away with the other database searches. But they are not saying what.

MC 6, which releases tomorrow, will now fetch data exclusively from their own online database. Support for IMDB and every other source has been completely dropped.

I think it's not as bad as that sounds. From an update email they just sent out:
Now, when you download the DVD details of your specific edition, our system will automatically use Amazon to supply the missing cover image.
The beauty of it is: you won't even notice :-)

Are you using our Flic or CueCat scanner to add your DVDs?
Then version 6 will work out great for you!

You see, now our system will also do automatic Amazon Lookups for all barcode searches that are not recognized by our own database.
Again, you won't notice a thing, apart from getting more hits of course!

And if even Amazon reports: "never heard of that one", we've got a new "last resort" lookup solution (only for Region 1 discs though):

-- The excellent Region 1 DVD List published by hometheaterinfo.com --

It won't give you cover images, but it will at least recognize your barcodes and return basic information like Title, Year, Studio, Genre and Release Date. The list is updated on a daily basis, so it will be a great help keeping our results up-to-date.

Actually, it IS as bad as it sounds - at least until their database gets some teeth. Presently Alwin is trying to boast about how many movies are listed in their own database. Problem that I have experienced, however, is that the movies that are in there have very little detail for almost all movies. Only the front cover art - if any - and a summary of the plot. Not much else. I have mainly used DVDEmpire's database which has a tremendously greater amount of data in it for all movies that I have searched there.

Another issue is that Alwin is claiming that the reason for this change is that new users who download the demo version do not purchase because they are too confused by the Auto-Add dialog; that having multiple data sources is just too tricky for most new users. Sorry but that doesn’t quite go sown easily here. Besides, why not just add a "Simple" auto-add dialog that only searches their database, and keep the existing search dialog there for users who prefer it? Which is almost definitely the majority of existing users. Or, barring that, utilize the two separate versions - Standard and Pro - to differentiate between the multiple database search and the simple, one-database search?

Alwin even posted a thread to gather user suggestions for version 6 about a year ago, and then admittedly ignored all suggestions there in favor of his own - to limit the user data to his own admittedly lacking database.

In cases like mine where I am fortunate to have already built a database of my currently owned DVDs and managed to gather a lot of detailed data, using only the Collectorz.com weak database for new DVDs only is not quite as bad as someone who needs to add several hundred - or thousand - DVDs from scratch. I pity those users, as they will get only a bare minimum of detail for each DVD and will then have to add the remaining detail by searching for it outside of the Collectorz.com software and cut/paste it all into there individual database entries. I would not relish that task.

Unfortunately they have no such agreements for the Acronis True Image Home versions.

Ah... pity. That's probably why I upgraded to the Workstation version! When they rolled out the Workstation version, they offered Home users a very attractive upgrade and I jumped. I've never regretted doing so. I wonder if they still have a reasonable upgrade price for Home licensees?

I've purchased every version since either ATI8 or 9 - except the 2009 version - and I never received any offer to upgrade to the Workstation version. They must not like me!

I haven't been back to their forum at Wilders for three or four weeks so I don’t know if they released an amazing update or what!

I haven't been there in a while, either, but I seriously doubt that they've released a comprehensive and amazing patch. The accusation I have read most over the years (also levelled at Corel with PaintShop Pro), is that they use their existing paid customers as beta testers and then charge them for the fruits of their labours (ie to upgrade to the next version). Thus, buying maintenance agreements from them is a good idea. As I mentioned (and Carol seems to have gone the same route), I upgraded a few years ago to the Workstation version (now called Echo) which hasn't had a numerical upgrade in ages but has been rock solid. This is a version for their corporate customers and seems to be updated fairly often. Maintenace agreements are cheap, as well - $16 a year.  A LOT cheaper then buying upgrades.

Caveat: I have no idea what the built-in burner is like with this version, never having tried it.

Unfortunately they have no such agreements for the Acronis True Image Home versions.

Ever since True Image Home 11, Acronis has become pretty unreliable IMO.

Jim

That's why I use Echo Workstation version - haven't used a home version since 9 (which was fine in my usage).

Ha,ha...I still use version 9 home.  Does everything I want and is pretty much as reliable as Ghost (which we use at work).

Yeah, TI10 was the start of some troubles I saw with TI. 11 presented more issues yet. V.9 was probably the version most compatible with the various OS configurations and also with most external USB drives. I think ATI10 added their own burning engine for DVD burning; in V.9 you had to store the image on an internal HDD, but of course you could then easily move that image to a DVD the old-fashioned way: just drag it to the optical drive in Win Explorer! Actually that is how I still do it, as Acronis's in-built burner is pretty poor - and very slow.

ATI 11 has generated a lot of complaints at Wilders Security forum from long-time, usually loyal users. But for about a month or so after the 2009 version was released the screaming about it was crazy at Wilders. I mean, even the most true-blue Acronis backers there were refusing to use it, even after purchasing the upgrade. Which is why I was extremely surprised to see Gizmo's (Ian Richards) glowing review of the latest version in the most recent Windows Secrets newsletter. I haven't been back to their forum at Wilders for three or four weeks so I don’t know if they released an amazing update or what!

Thanks!

Living Room / Re: I had the strangest dream last night...
« Last post by J-Mac on December 07, 2008, 11:37 AM »
No, I think I had the strangest dream last night.

I dreamed that I was brushing my teeth. Then as I was brushing my teeth I realized that my armpits were sweaty because I was a little hot. And apparently I didn't have a shirt on because the next action I took was to take my toothbrush out of my mouth and start brushing my armpits.

Then sanity and logic returned to me (sort of) and I realized what I was doing and that toothbrushes were meant for teeth and not armpits. So then I started to become very concerned about getting the toothbrush back in my mouth where it belonged but I didn't know how I was going to do that because I couldn't put it back in my mouth after it had been in my sweaty armpit. So then I put soap on my toothbrush and started rubbing it into the bristles. Then I realized that I couldn't just put it back in my mouth with soap all over it. It was a conundrum that I could not figure out.

Luckily I either woke up soon after that or just dreamed about something else, because I don't remember what happened next.

This is a true story. I really did dream that 24 hours ago when I was sleeping. Beat that!

But I think I need a new toothbrush, just to be on the safe side...

Now I'm really getting scared here!  :o  Starting to sound like the start of a Clive Barker film.   :P

Hey Gautam,

I have been trying ever since it got posted on Bits, but when I click on the "Buy Now" button it goes to a page that says it is transferring me to your store, and then immediately jumps to an error page. At first the error said something about folder problems; currently it says:

There was an error with your request.

If this keeps up I hope you'll consider extending the offer.

General Software Discussion / Re: Your fav' audio CD burner?
« Last post by J-Mac on December 04, 2008, 01:57 AM »
To be fair Roxio did it before Nero - that is why I swapped to Nero 5 originally.

That's probably true, Carol. But I already had Nero Ultra 6 when I purchased Roxio EMC8, so I saw the bloat appear first in Nero. I had been using Sonic's applications - MyDVD Deluxe Suite and DVDIt - but after Roxio purchased Sonic (or actually was purchased BY Sonic, I think) I had to go with Roxio in order to upgrade my Sonic utilities. Thus I saw the bloat in Nero first, then got to experience it in Roxio EMC later, after I purchased V.8.

Thanks!

I had trouble with a few CD burning softwares that tried burning music but always ended up having a few songs skipping when the CD wasn't scratched, or song songs didn't even play. Since I switched to 'Roxio', I'm a happy man, and I get to listen to all the music on a CD every time with no type of skipping that makes you want to throw your player out a window.

Roxio Easy Media Creator 8 was the last version I purchased. Maybe it's just me, but I felt that it had caught the "Nero Bloat and Invasive Components" disease. I didn't like the "Drag to Disk" feature, but even though I disabled it a number of times it always found a way to suddenly appear on my desktop again unexpectedly.

Roxio had just added too many modules, a la Nero Ultra, IMO. Rather than stick with their main expertise, their base programs, they decided that all of their users needed to have an all-encompassing suite, including photo organization and editing. I don’t want Roxio or Nero to do that - I already have much better tools. But like Nero, Roxio tries to grab the file association for every type of media file on your box.

I had Roxio EMC8 and Nero Ultra 7 and ended up removing both and going back to basics, with several smaller, specialized applications.

Thanks!

While that is good advice J-mac, it ignores the context of this thread.

I mean theoretically everything can be safe if you have a backup irregardless of your security settings and it might help improve your security settings if you have the correct attitude in dealing with these but this ignores people who have different habits as well as people who don't have the technical knowledge to rely on anything but their antiviruses.

Paul,

That wasn’t my point, actually. I just kinda threw that in there for good measure!

My point was that using an A-V with well-tested heuristics is about as good as almost anyone here would need to protect against zero-day infections. Fearing that special zero-day infection even with that good A-V is, well, fatalistic. If you don’t feel that an A-V with good heuristic capabilities can protect you to your satisfaction, then yes: you definitely need a fall-back plan. Like backups! Rather than a "better" Anti-Virus. 8)

Jim
1795
I know heuristics can detect 0-day malware but I doubt they can detect every 0-day malware unlike a HIPS that monitors every changes and lately it seems malware has been improving at a much more rapid rate. It always seems to be a single virus that slips through AV guards especially if you forget to update from one version to another.

At least I have no other explanation for how viruses can still pass quality guards especially with their improved heuristics.

This is one of those "Anything is possible" things. Sure, you can always get hit with a zero-day infection. Of course it is possible I can get struck by lightning every time I go out in an electrical storm.

I take my chances with NOD32's heuristics and I backup, backup, backup. To a few different locations. I am very fortunate that I have not been infected in all the years I have been using computers - and that is more than a few years! As in almost everything I do, I take the best precautions that I can while still maintaining a balance in keeping it all real - and usable.

It has worked for me for quite a long time. And if it goes bad, I have all the recovery options in place that I can reasonably have.

At this point, I have stopped worrying!

Jim
1796
I was using Symantec Corporate Antivirus because I can install it free and legal from my workplace. It was suprisingly good as far as no impact to my computer use. I never felt its presence.

Now I do not use any antivirus, antispyware, or firewall. I am using Returnil and everything runs in a virtual environment. After every reboot I am back to a clean slate. I don't have to worry about viruses or malware. Plus, I can try out new software virtually before committing it to my real hard drive. The only drawback is that I have to turn off protection and reboot if I want to make any lasting changes.

I'll have to take a look at Returnil. The only time I tried a sandbox-type application was Buffer-Zone, which I actually won here at DC. Didn't like that at all. Maybe it was just me, though, being too lazy! When I booted into Buffer-Zone the UI of my system was so sparse, it was worse than booting up in Safe Mode. And I could not find any easy way to get it more usable. Never booted into it again.

Jim
1797
NOD32 v3 on every computer I own - and I'll be keeping it. It just works for me. Granted I don’t often get threats - hopefully I am avoiding the more threatening sites - but every now and then NOD32 pops up and grabs something. I figure that if it has done the job for me for so long, I'm OK with it.

 :)

General Software Discussion / Re: Collectorz.com... again!
« Last post by J-Mac on November 29, 2008, 10:27 PM »
I don’t know - mixed feelings about this.

I do understand that it might be more economical for them to use only their own database. I say "might be" because I don’t know that the other databases are indeed charging Collectorz.com to allow their users to access their data. I can see it as a possibility, and even a probability at some point. Witness the Zap2It unannounced cancellation of all free subscriptions to their TV listings database late last year and starting a new paid-only service. But I don’t believe that it is yet a fact or Alwin would no doubt be using that as the prime reason for his elimination of other databases from Movie Collector 6.

On the other hand, the Collectorz.com movie database is woefully incomplete. Virtually all movies in their collection have only the front DVD case cover art and a fair number have no cover art at all. Also, the details of the DVDs are often sparse, especially compared to the DVD Empire database. Last but not least, many DVD movies are not in the Collectorz.com movie database at all. Several posters have posted specifics regarding which are missing - and many appear to be DVDs published for outside the USA. I have a fairly modest DVD collection compared to many users at their forum - 200+ DVD titles - and there have been approximately a dozen or more DVDs that showed no results from their database. Many more were in the database but had very minimal information. Like title and duration in minutes, nothing else. (Three were like that for me).

So I could live with only using the Collectorz.com movie database IF they seriously improve it and bring it up to or better than the quality of the databases they are eliminating.

Of course a big part of the problem is also Alwin himself. Not only doesn’t he mince words - which doesn’t bother me at all - but he can also get pretty abrasive to users in his forum. Personality trait, I guess. That never helps in situations like this!

Jim

Thanks for posting back, Jim. I'm going to stop worrying about it. I suspect that because I bought the second licence through the same account as I did the first (ie same e-mail address and cc), a second "seat" was enabled on the original key. It's the only explanation that makes sense. I haven't written the developer yet, but will do so and post back if I get a response.

Well, I imagine it depends on when you made the purchases. The email I received with the new registration info (the one I quoted above) indicates that all registration codes from then on will work for more than one installation. Keeping in line with the license, of course. So if you had purchased either or both prior to Feb 2008 those codes are probably limited. Or perhaps his server no longer requires the activation in the same way. That would explain why they are different.

General Software Discussion / Re: What is the currently best Desktop Search software?
« Last post by J-Mac on November 27, 2008, 11:04 PM »
Archivarius doesn't strain the CPU too much (yes, there'S a lot of HD activity...) but X1 does. And does it in a very irritating way. The textextractor process -- in particular -- is fairly voracious.

Not on my installations (XP Pro and Vista) - X1 is as light as a feather! Archivarius is a jewel, but I need the more advanced previewing capabilities that X1 offers and thus have relegated Archivarius to reserve status. dtSearch is sort of in between the two... very good previewing capabilities and easy on resources. However, it takes the longest of the three to index my drive.

NB Archivarius 4.14 is out and now indexes Acronis True Image files.

dunno... Have you manually started X1's indexer ? TextExtractor is quiet for the whole time ? whatever is indexed ? Maybe it's indexing files here which are hard to... index/extract ???

But the fact is... it's been quite taxing lately...

Desktop search engines seem to act so differently on different computers, they must be sensitive to certain configurations. More so than other applications.
