General Software Discussion / Re: Software Ethics
« Last post by Armando on December 26, 2007, 12:10 AM »
We don't need regulation. We don't need courts. We don't need "Certified Engineers" making software. We don't need lawyers drafting EULAs. We need people voting with the most powerful weapons in the know universe, money and word of mouth.

IMHO eBay's system is powerful because it uses that kind of way, brilliantly taking advantage of the webs interactive capabilities (borrowed from forum and review site -- which also have a powerful influence on consumers decisions). there are ways around the system, but as a vendor or a buyer, you have to earn trust. If you don't, your crooked plans will be short lived  : unsatisfied customers or vendors will complain and that's it.

Maybe there's money to be made and quality to be gained if we could create a new model of software marketing/selling that uses some of the elements of eBay’s structure and some of the principles behind donationware... Just thinking out loud.  :)

Edit : I shall add that I still think we need EULAs, regulations, etc. In a well integrated functioning and healthy society these should only serve as guidelines and be used as safety nets though. ; the guidelines orienting the transactions, allowing the "measure" of trust and honesty.

I find that an interesting idea... Or why not instead have the title bar of the current active window flash + a horizontally scrolling note (on the bar) describing the event wanting to steal focus ? (most application have a title bar... that way, you don't loose screen estate)

General Software Discussion / Re: How many of you use encryption?
« Last post by Armando on December 24, 2007, 01:16 PM »
[slightly off topic] Ubuntu might take its encryption options and features a couple steps further :

The Gutsy Gibbon Alternate installer introduced the possiblity to configure encrypted devices (with cryptsetup/LUKS and dm-crypt) and offers a standard partman recipe ("Use entire disk with encryption"). For Hardy we want to review how we can improve this, in particular:

 * Provide support for it in ubiquity
 * Offer encryption support for autoresizing and "automatically partition free space" modes, too.
 * Consider support for key files (on USB sticks, etc) instead of/in addition to passphrases.

Interesting coincidence, there seem to be 2 different software (with a different version number) of mp3tag :

http://www.mp3tag.de/en/
http://www.maniactools.com/soft/mp3tag/

So, which one is the "right" one ?

Looks like you'll have to make FARR cross-platform now to compete, mouser.
I can help you of course :) Lets port it to wxWidgets :D

That would be nice... But a lot of work. Would it be worth it ?

I've been using Keybreeze which, while not free, uses up much less memory and is much more capable.

Much more capable doing what ?

General Software Discussion / Re: SQLNotes...what is it exactly?
« Last post by Armando on December 22, 2007, 07:18 PM »
Everybody : there's now a poll to decide on a new name for SQLNotes (at sqlnotes.net) : http://www.sqlnotes....e/posts/Default.aspx

No love at first sight there (which doesn't mean that I don't like them at all!)... But some have potential.

Naming something is soooo personal... I usually find that I get used to any names if they're no to bad. Hell, I even got used to Find and Run Robot.  ;)

I don't mind at all if a name is not descriptive (or even a bit ugly). Actually, a not too descriptive name allows for expansion one hasn't foreseen. NightHawk, Azureus, Zoho (or whatever) are not exactly the most descriptive names (yet, they are, in their own way…). I believe most people don't care if they don't understand what a name means. And they won't even try to find out.

So, IMHO, despite the fact that I usually get used to any names, what's mostly important is a name that 1) sounds relatively "good" (easy to pronounce and to remember and uses morphemes with positive "resonances") 2) can be easily used to inspire a logo and generate some good marketing slogans, 3) doesn't have silly or bad connotations (here or elsewhere, in other languages...), 4) is original (available domain, maybe??), 5) doesn't impose rigid restrictions on the software's evolution.

There are many other aspects to consider. One helpful link :
http://www.halfagain...g/whats-my-name.html

But like the author of this blog writes :

Sure, there are certain guidelines and ideas it’s good to keep in mind, but I promise you, there’s an exception to every rule.  (Case in point: successfully branded, wildly popular and by all standards bad, names abound.)

Edit : just in case, here are some of the most interesting links in the link above :

General Software Discussion / Re: Your top 3 favorite portable software programs

I'll have to think about that one… hummm my 3 favorite portable apps…

but I wanted to mention http://www.pendrivelinux.com/ . It's really fun to have an OS on a pendrive. The only ones I used as such in the past were puppy linux and MCNlive. they worked really well.

pendrivelinux.com offers different sections and one is about portable apps : http://pendriveapps.com/. A very good selection of portable apps, many of them run on Windows (like Winamp, Pidgin, EssentialPIM...)

Thanks nontroppo. Interesting stuff.

On another note, I wonder... How can Windows XP under bootcamp run faster than on "a PC"... ??? Doesn't it only depend on the machine's specs ???

The machines specs are :

PC : Fujitsu Lifebook A6025, with an Intel Core Duo running at 1.86 GHz, 1GB RAM, running Windows XP SP2.

MacBook : 2GB RAM machine, running a 1.83 GHz Core Duo processor.
MacBook Pro : 4GB RAM machine, running a 2.16 GHz Core 2 Duo processor.
Mac Pro was a 4GB RAM machine, running a Quad Core configuration with two 2.66 GHz Dual-Core Intel Xeon processors.

I'll have to think about how to protect my privacy a bit better. I encrypt all backups already, so that's one thing. I was also thinking of encrypting my whole laptop drive with truecrypt (many files are already encrypted with various programs, like axcrypt)... But it's stuff like what J-Mac described earlier that frightens me... Anyway, sorry about being a bit off-topic here.

Yes, I think that most of these problems are "skin related". Even farr's window placement: I had problems with farr not keeping exactly its given position on the desktop, but when I removed the skin, it behaved perfectly.

Living Room / Re: Laptop hard drive... 5400 or 7200 ?
« Last post by Armando on December 19, 2007, 06:21 PM »
A friend just ordered a MacBook (I don't really understand why because all she does is web surf, email, iTunes and iPhoto but its up to her is she has money to burn) ... I was really shocked at the price they were charging for hard disc upgrades - and they were all 5400RPM.

To change from 120Gb to 160Gb (and the colour of you machine from white to black - but there are no other changes in spec I can see) they charge a whopping £120 (~$250) !

If you want to be flash and upgrade to a 250Gb drive then it will cost you £150 (~$310)

I was checking prices and you can get a new WD 250Gb 5400 drive (laptop profile) for £77 or less!!! How much are these drives actually costing Apple?

I was also shocked to see a 1Gb to 2Gb memory upgrade is £90 (~$190) ... WTF !!!

Anyway back to the question ...

I looked up laptop drives on www.dabs.com and they all seem to be 5400 RPM (except for one which was 4200RM) ... there must be a reason ???

Yep. Once you get into that bandwagon, certain things are just more expensive. eg : my girlfriend wanted to buy an mp3 player and basically had to buy a IPod Nano, even the SanDisk was cheaper and has more features -- mic., FM stereo...-- plus an easily replaceable battery (the IPod Nano battery thing — $$$ + userfriendliness —- is such a scam!!).

Of course, for hard drives, you can always buy it and change it yourself. Same thing applies for almost all components (but, lucky Apple, most -- not all, of course -- mac users will prefer to purchase stuff directly from Apple... Oh well).

It seems to me that most computer dealers (like Dell, for instance) overcharge for components and peripherals.

Ah !  Well... They had it yesterday... But they're all gone.  :( I hate it when that happens. So, Darwin, let's weep together (until friday, or maybe the 28...)  It'll be fun though when I finally get it -- especially for 1) storing more cra...err... essential stuff, 2) and for backups, indexing, farr's search, etc. Woo hoo! maybe X1 will actually start to feel responsive.  ;)

Many thanks everybody !

I just came back from work and found all these posts...  :)
So I also checked some reviews, etc. and, yes,  it seems that going for the seagate 7200 rpm would be a better choice (especially that I'm an impatient computer user...).

as I already suggested, I'll get this one : ST9160823ASG . The "G" ("gravity") indicates a special anti-shock sensor (only 5$ more!). This Seagate offers impressive performance and it comes with a good warranty (5 years). So... Off to the store. (please, don't disturb : I'll be transfering data tonight  ;) )

Living Room / Laptop hard drive... 5400 or 7200 ?
« Last post by Armando on December 18, 2007, 09:36 PM »

Yet another hard drive question. :-[

I'm going to buy a new HardDrive for my laptop. I'm looking for a 160gb SATA (Seagate),  instead of my current 80gb.

I was going to buy a 5400 rpm model (ST9160821AS). The recording method of that drive is supposed to perpendicular, which is considered a good thing (but I'm no specialist...)

But now I'm hesitating : should I go for the 7200 rpm (ST9160823AS )?? This one uses similar technology (perpendicular), but Seagate also mentions "16/17 EPRML" (I thought that was pretty standard, ….. anyway). Seems faster according to the specs, but I wonder about 2 things :

- Heat (will my laptop run significantly warmer ?)
- Battery life (will the battery life decrease significantly ?)

Anybody ?

Thanks!!
