General Software Discussion / Re: EditPad Pro 7-BETA

Have you tried either of the companion products from JGsoft - RegEx Buddy and RegEx Magic?

Both are directly available in EditPad Pro search pane and the Magic version requires no RegEx syntax knowledge! All the power of RegEx without the pain.

Am I the only one who can see a circular argument here - you can only get into the forum via version 7 but you can't get the beta without visiting the forum ???

Presumably it is whatever your credit card says 40 Euros translates to.

Sorry - I am being dense - how do you get to the forum from inside the software? I am a registered user running 6.4.4 but I can't see any forum access????

I suppose you checked the router firewall logs?

Have you tried factory resetting the router and setting it up from scratch?
1781
Can you configure the DNS in the router?

It was up until about 3 years ago - I had an AMD Athlon A MSI motherboard (if memory serves) which had Promise 0 and 1 onboard. It worked fine and gave a little speed boost for large data shifting applications (such as video editing) but I can't really see the point now with faster SATA drives and multi-core processors.

I used to use onboard Promise Raid interface. To be honest I found it more hassle than it was worth (though it rarely caused any problems requiring a reinstall). It did help with video editing before multiple processors were available but now it doesn't seem worth the effort for a desktop.

What you have to realise is that all support centres assume that if there is a problem it must be on your computer/network.

They are absolutely perfect and couldn't possibly have a fault.

I have had the same problem with BT in the past in the UK - my IP dies or get allocated a dead IP but it isn't their fault. Strange though that when I disconnect and reconnect it all works fine with an IP on a different server!

If it is a DNS fault there is nothing you can do about it except use a different DNS at least temporarily - try Google DNS or OpenDNS and see if that resolves the problem.

Set up TCP/IP on your connection to use the chosen DNS then open a command window and try the following:

ipconfig /flushdns
ipconfig /release
ipconfig /renew
ipconfig /all

check that your active connection has the correct DNS servers - can you connect now?

Huhhh ? I used to run a striped System disk - thought that was the whole point of striping to make the system go faster.

I also had a striped data disk set.

So long as you keep regular backups there is no problem (and actually I didn't really have to use the backups more than on a standard system).

For 40 MB of disk space I wouldn't touch it. It could be your bios setup program or some other booting program in a hidden partition.  If it was 40 GB that's another matter. :)

Agreed - actually NTFS volumes always have some unallocated space - you can't reclaim it so don't try!

40Mb seems slightly larger than usual but it is a tiny amount of space that can be left alon and may simply be a reflection of the fact that you have logical partitions instead of primary partitions.

Can I simply move "Curt" (incl Documents, Music, etcetera) to another partition?
Will Vista automatically understand and remember this?

No you can't because Curt cotains all the details of your user profile. You will be able to move a lot of it but it will leave you in a mess.

What you can (and should) do is to move all the user folders (Documents, Music etc.) to your second hard disk.

You can do this automatically by changing the location of the folder in folder properties - right click on the folder and use the options to move it.

The only problems you may encounter are:

  • Any files open/in use at the time won't be moved
  • Any programs with specific folder locations set up in their settings (eg. iTunes) will need to be told where the folder has moved to.

You can move the whole profile folder but it is a bit of registry editing - so I would personally avoid it and it doesn't achieve much anyway.

As for your hard disk being full when it shouldn't be have you tried turning off system protection and then turning it on again (used to be called System Restore). This can use up vast amounts of space without you knowing about it - especially in Vista and 7 where it doesn't only store lots of restore points but also store rollback versions of user files. Turning it off removes all the rollback and restore data.

General Software Discussion / Re: table width in MS Office problem
« Last post by Carol Haynes on October 10, 2010, 06:39 PM »
If I understand you you want a fixed width table with one column varying by content and the others automatically adjusting so that the overall width does not change - is that correct?

If so I don't think what you are asking for is possible - what you can do is specify all the column widths precisely (either as percentages or cm).

I can't really see how this could be possible - if you want one column to fit the content how would Word know how you want the other columns changed to fit?

By default Word seems to have two modes of operation - fit to content or fit to page width.

What you could do is insert a text box into the document and put your table inside that. In the table properties turn off the preferred width option under the columns tab. This makes all the columns variable width but the table will be restricted to the size of the text box - which can be resized at any time.

(I did all this in Word 2010 but I am pretty sure the table properties and text box properties haven't changed too much since earlier versions).

Depending on what you are selling there are various options with PayPal - which provides many payment options with no monthly charge at all - just 3% per transaction plus a flat rate transaction charge (30p in the UK).

If you are selling things one at a time (ie. you don't need a multiple object cart) just add a PayPal button to each product page. PayPal will let buyers use any credit card (without needing a PayPal account) as well as PayPal payments.

If you want a full shopping cart system there are a few standalone carts out there such as ZenCart and osCommerce. Both are free and support PayPal payments (with non-Paypal user credit/debit card processing) but I have to say they are both beasts to tailor.

Personally I quite like VirtueMart (which is a component for Joomla based sites). Free with lots of payment options and shipping options but you do have to be using Joomla to use it (though there is no reason why you couldn't set up a Joomla subsite and tailor the Joomla template to fit in with the main site).

(PS all of these are PHP/MySQL based.)

I can't remember who was taking him to Afghanistan? App103 was going to pass him on from her visit - do you know where he went April and who with?

Hogan is getting fretful that his friend has gone missing (possibly behind enemy lines)!

Good question!

DNS screw up - I keep coming across this with random sites and ISPs.

Try changing your router DNS settings to google's public DNS.

8.8.8.8
8.8.4.4

see if that helps.

If it does your ISP DNS is corrupt and it might take a while for it to get fixed.

I had a customer recently who couldn't access bmibaby.com for about 3 months - she called yesterday to say suddenly it works again. Of course the ISP denies all knowledge of a problem ...

If you want to cut out eBay I'll send you a list of the electronic detritus that half-fills my basement
-cranioscopical (October 05, 2010, 09:24 AM)

I'll bet his list is longer than yours judging by his obsession with eBay!

Maybe we should organise a crap swap system - that way all the unwanted rubbish can circulate the globe until someone finds a use for it.

Looks handy jdd, though I am not sure I fancy the context menu popping up at random every 59 minutes. I prefer the idea that the software recognises that the computer is not being used and then keeps things ticking.

Having said that my friend's sysadmin has now changed the system script so it doesn't interfere with power settings as he had so many complaints from staff. Can't imagine what he was thinking of originally.

Looks very expensive for what it does and if it only works properly within 1m I can't personally see the point?

Why not just buy a powered USB hub and a 2m cable ?

Just skimmed through this lot and you have my heartfelt sympathy!

Am I correct that you now have a Cintiq, Motion and 2 HP thingies and yet you still don't actually have anything that works properly  :-[

Ah the joys of eBay - someone should cut up your credit cards and nuke your PayPal account ...
