General Software Discussion / Re: YzShadow - Drop shadows for all your windows
« Last post by nudone on October 28, 2007, 06:21 AM »
i like these things AND i don't like them.

ya know, if it was builit into the operating system i'd probably leave it enabled. when it's a util i just end up removing it as i get that 'resource anxiety' feeling.

i think the green shadow (backlight) is a nice effect - nice against a black or dark wallpaper and windows theme.

could it be modified to include how long the machine has been running?

i.e. without being rebooted.

alive for 2 years, 10 months, 16 days, 24h 5m 48s. which must the longest i've ever gone without reinstalling or resorting to a ghost image.

i imagine 2 years 10 months is going to be miniscule compared to some forum members i can think of...

General Software Discussion / Re: Best (free) program to recover files?
« Last post by nudone on October 26, 2007, 02:26 AM »
i don't know what 'Davory' http://www.x-ways.net/davory/ does that is different to the rest but when i needed to recover a large quantity of jpg files none of the other recovery programs i tried found them - which i find quite bizarre and a little alarming.

which other programs did i try? i can't remember it was a few years back but you can appreciate that it was ALL the free and trial programs i could find at the time.

Davory isn't free but it's worth it for whatever it does. the UI isn't flashy either.

i've drawn a couple of nightmarish cody things before (search for mr. globe and his disapproval - the other image remains only viewed by mouser - it was a nasty yellow relative of cody) but beakless hovering cody is one of the most terrifying things i've seen.

i can't even dare to imagine what the background story is to that image.

right, well part of this buying a cheap laptop idea was to aquaint myself with vista but it sounds like i'll only be wanting to remove it and put xp on instead - which means i may as well stick with the machines i've got.

i don't understand how batteries can vary so much. the one i mentioned really is useless and i don't wish to waste money on a replacement as i suspect that will also be equally rubbish after 6 months. and yet, i have an old ipaq pentium two laptop with two batteries inside - i'm pretty sure i could get 4 to 5 hours use out of them after a fresh charge and they must be years old by now.

i'ver read about batteries (not) having memory and how to reset them. nothing has helped with this dud i speak of, which makes me wonder - are some batteries just crap or do they easily become crap if you don't treat them like spoilt brats.

i'd not thought about hard drive speed but it's a good point. i guess (again) that these budget laptops are going to be fitted with the slowest hard drives.

i agree about battery life. maybe the laptop i have is a bad example but the battery life became a joke after a few months - now it's tragic. i wouldn't mind but the laptop hasn't been used that often so i'd expect the battery to still be okay.

there is now an official fix for the exploit:

i think these cheap laptops are going to be of the bulky heavy slabs variety otherwise its weight and 'lap comfort' would be important factors.

i'm not going to rush out and buy one so hopefully i can find something that isn't an oversized brick.

why not put  it in your will
i thought that myself. i think the reason for using a dedicated service (or something like it) is that it would be immediate (or soon after your death). whereas waiting for the will to be read out (or acted upon) could take days/weeks/months.

dumb question, but would this also include 'real alternative' codec as i assume a lot of the real player content has been stripped away?

(can't get the referenced article to load at the moment.)

gaming isn't a concern but heat and battery life would be important. saying vista isn't nice on them makes me wonder if that means they feel sluggish or just look a bit nasty.
