Owncloud is just going to be a different way of getting to the same place ... Key word is Cloud. Here's the thing with the GAL...(key word global)...the object is to centralize information so everyone has access to, with out having to store a copy of the whole thing locally. This also cuts down on the need to use a ton of bandwidth while everybody syncs everything with everybody else.

How often are you really going to be completely offline these days? Any contact that has been previously used on any given device is going to be stored locally in its version of history. So it will only be the newly needed previously unused contacts that are not going to be readily available if you find yourself in airplane mode for some reason.

Actually, if you don't have a connection available to do a lookup, you'll not be able to send/call either...so there's really no loss of functionality. Unless for some odd reason you desperately need to lookup someone's number before writing it on the wall in an airplane bathroom.

hmmm....I'm really having a hard time seeing where these options are.  Let's say I have a csv file of addresses.  I want to use it to make a GAL, but I can't find that option anywhere.  I'm really having a hard time with all this gui oversimplification windows has done with windows 8 and wp8.  it's too much.  too much white space, not enough buttons.  But they still need the functionality, so they are hiding everything in the weirdest places.  is it really that much of a gui nuisance to have a little menu button somewhere that expands all the options in one place?  is that really going to turn the entire market away from windows to apple?

IIRC the csv import option requires PowerShell. Yes it a bit intimidation (CLI...) but it's really not that bad. If I can find the procedure in my notes from the last job (had to pull all sorts of shit from everywhere), I'll post them here later.

Stoic, regarding your sales manager.  He must have a ton of contacts in linkedin and facebook.  How does he keep everything synchronized?  My suspicion is he uses his phone and that's it.  He doesn't care if it shows up on outlook or something.  true?

Not necessarily ... You see unfortunately I've been rather vocal (BOFH brand hostile) regarding all things Social Networking around here. So most folks are afraid to use it, in fear of reprisal. Honestly...(We're switching carriers and all getting new phones)...I just found out a few minutes ago that the owner really wanted an iPhone, but ordered an Android instead because they were afraid to ask me if the iPhone was ok. However irrational hatred aside... I ok'd the iPhone because we really do need somebody around here to have one for testing purposes ... And I'm sure as shit not going to carry the damn thing (It is so getting hacked to death - Muhahah).

But now you got me thinking again.  If our distrust of google is valid (I believe so), then I'd like to store my contacts on MS Exchange.

question 1)...I know I can store photos on the GAL.  Will the photos show up on an Android phone?

Hm... I don't know. THE GAL is available by default on an Android, but the photos showing up part is really up to whatever client software is running/handling it on the phone.

question 2)...I am using the Touchdown app for Exchange access on my phone currently.  When I open up the GAL, the full list doesn't appear as it does in Outlook.  If I search, I can search, but the list does not appear.  I imagine this is because it's huge (thousands of people), so to load it in would be bad?  Is that the case?  Because frankly, I'd like to load the whole thing in and be able to browse and scroll through it like on the desktop.

Mind you I'm guessing here...but I got the impression from the Office 365 site that there was an Android port of MS Office mobile ... But I could be completely off my nut on that one.

IIRC Touchdown was a necessary evil a few generations back before there was a native Droid/Exchange option. Most of the staff in using Droids of one flavor or the other, but they are all on the whatever came in-the-box Email client for the Exchange connection. And I haven't heard any can't find GAL listed address complaints in the (post Touchdown era) last couple years.

I've got one of the guy's here experimenting with the Droid/Outlook/pictures think to see if we can get it working.

Classic spam trick is to use the first half of an address book to validate spam sent to the second half of the address book. This is actually fairly easy, because most people in any social circle have many contacts in common. Chances are your wife's account and machine are fine...but one of her friends got hit and her address is just cyclically bubbling to the top for "validation". And if that person is also on a Yahoo account it adds veracity to the appearance of the headers by "legitimately" pushing it through their hijacked Yahoo account.

Hm... Okay, here's a practical application for it in advertising. We all remember the be the 10th caller when the song of the day plays...right? Well... Replace the 10th caller part with a message that is played during the song that a phone app can pickup and read. Then the app handles the auto dialing to tell you if you won.

advertising is all about eyeballs...so if they have to have the stations app to play/win eyes and ears are both had.

Now how do I get somebody to send me a million dollars for the idea?

if it was me I'd totally uninstall ALL the video drivers and the associated apps - clean out as much as possible, then shut down and reinstall the bare minimum (have a fish around and you might find an installer for just the video drivers)

Because what you are essentially saying is that your going to export and import stuff until you have in one location (exchange), and then you just modify that going forward. But it doesn't matter if it's exchange, google contacts, apple, etc.  Because they're all the same as far as that goes.  the syncing is what would distinguish anything for me.  So then...what's the best one and why?

Also, if that was the case, then I'm willing to go for a third party contact manager and just divorce myself completely from the big boys.  Especially if the third party offered nifty features.  Otherwise my choices would be google contacts, exchange, windows live...in that order.  Google contacts just because my phone is android and would make it easier.

Sorry about the delay, I'm trying to get IT wound down to a dull roar for a 3 week Christmas vacation...and the staff seems intent on making that as hard as possible. Ggaaaaaaaa!

Anyhow.. I've been running an Exchange server for close to a decade now and as crotchety as the old one got right before getting decommissioned it was still reliable as hell. We have several flavors of Android, a few iPhones, and me still with the WP7. All of which are stone axe reliably connected to our Exchange (now 2010) server. The sales manager - who I hold personally responsible (just to be an ass) for killing our Exchange 2003 server with his 8GB mailbox - is constantly glued to his (Android) phone with all the ferocity of a teenage girl. Yet with the insane amount of information that he pours through the system... His phone, computer, tablets, and laptop all stay happily in sync.

I don't trust Google, and have had some very bad experiences with their IMO rather feeble attempt at a mail server administration interface. I gave it a good, fair, and enthusiastic attempt...and it just burned me over and over.

1. A freshly created empty mailbox should never corrupt. Test messages went through in both directions, were deleted, and from the next day forward mail could not be sent from that box regardless of what was tried.

2. Delete means delete (e.g. eradicate), not play peek-A-boo with me because it's not really gone entirely...as it's still there in "spirit"...which is why you can't recreate a fresh one with that name.

3. Telling me to "Just use a different variation and/or add a 1 to "resolve the issue" is an incredibly bad idea...especially after the client has just spent a fortune on letterhead (etc...) with the now burnt cookie address.


I finally gave up after a year of trying to get one of our customers Google hosted mail domain to fly straight, and let them go back to using Yahoo accounts.


3rd party solutions can be effective only if you self host. Yes that is my own prejudice speaking...but it really is next to impossible to get a good idea of exactly how large/stable a company really is on the internet. So I try to avoid betting-the-farm on solutions that may vaporize overnight.

Apple solutions are designed to work fine in iWorld, but the instant you try to stray from "the path", you end up getting tech support from Goldie Hawn (a cute vapid blond from the 60's/70's).

Given that there is no real reason to be tweaking with the graphics stuff ("Not a gamer") just uninstall the CCC. ATi used to make it a separate DL so it could be easily ignored...but the newer versions of their driver have it bundled in.

The CCC used to be notorious for many weird assed crashes, which is why I never usually install it.

If nothing else at least that will stop it from constantly flooding the logs with it's nonsense "informational" messages.

Nope. I've seen this behavior before (screenshots helped a lot there). I don't know what's causing it...but my machine here at work has done it a few times when the browser was lagging a bit.

Usually seems to happen when a page in (the background/)another window is eating up resources, and the one you're looking at is still loading when you try to scroll.

We tend to assume too much about the environment in question, and sometimes miss the obvious...or something that would have been obvious - because we'd have reflexively checked it a long time ago - had we been sitting in front of the machine.

I don't know that anybody hates Bonjour more than I do, but I can't see it doing this. So I'd stay focused on the video angle for now.

@4wd - Yes uptime.exe had developed a crashing problem awhile back (it is an NT4 utility...), but I was thinking it was only for network connections...not LM too (oops!). Also IIRC it reports in UTC so the disparity should match your time zone offset.
