TFDocs / Re: tfdocs.com - first suggestions and criticisms
« Last post by mouser on December 18, 2009, 07:16 AM »
After using tfdocs to create a few documents i can say for sure that creating the xml by hand for tree form documents is a bit hairy and not for the faint hearted.

I think the solution is a gui that holds your hand through creating documents, either desktop based or web based.  of course this is largely what The Tree Form Machine does, and you can use that to create documents.  But I think what is needed is a new gui tool for making the new tf documents.

It's on my list of things to do but that will have to wait until there is some time and demand.

Living Room / Niflas releases "Saira" a new game like Knytt and Within a Deep Forest
« Last post by mouser on December 18, 2009, 12:45 AM »
Long time DC forum readers who enjoy casual 2d style indie adventure games are in for a real treat this week.  First came news that one of the favorite games we've discussed, Samarost 2, can now be had along with the brand new game Machinariumfrom the same developer, for $10.

And now comes news that the author one of the other clear favorite example of this genre (Knytt and Within a Dark Forest), has released a brand new indie game called "Saira".  (It's $17 for the full version -- a bit steep for this type of game but you can get an additional license for a friend for $2 so that makes a nice purchase for teams of dc people).

Saira teleported herself to Mars, but when she reached the planet all other humans in the galaxy had mysteriously disappeared. Now, how does something like that happen?
Saira is a two dimensional puzzle platformer for Windows 2000 or later.

i posted a comment reply:
"Thanks for writing about the coding snack section on our site -- it's definitely one of the things we have the most fun doing.

-mouser (donationcoder.com)

ps.
Casey, we have a bunch of very large commercial-grade closed source applications on our site that do require signing up to obtain a free license.  But the coding snacks section programs are all free for download by anyone, require no signup, and usually come with source code."

Very nice item on a cool site i hadn't heard about before (TinyHacker.com), about our Coding Snacks section:

The Coding Snacks forum within the DonationCoder.com site is a breeding ground of new ideas for tiny, open source apps. Read through some of the previous entries and post one of your ideas you’d like to see implemented.

Tiny Hacker is related to the "How-To Geek" site, a very cool place.

live search of some of the dictionary website would be awesome as well, while we are building a wishlist :)

(since imdb is already supported as live search in google plus addon for farr it's not high on my priority list)

maybe it's a zen commentary.. after all, only a creature who can't jump would dream of a world where every time you jump the universe rearranges itself.

should be same effect -- send me the plugin where you give farr the exe paths as icon paths and ill investigate why farr might show a blank ([email protected]).

what happens when you give farr an executable path that doesnt have an icon? is it just blank space? maybe i can fix farr to show a better default in that case.

fair enough.. you could add a few generic icons inside your plugin directory and return those, just so the space wasn't blank.
that actually makes me think i should add some generic icons in with farr that can be used by plugins as placeholders.

  • "Parallels Desktop 4 for Windows and Linux delivers a solid, all-around virtualization experience... exceptionally easy to use."
  • "With support for up to 32 virtual CPUs per VM, VirtualBox is now the class leader in terms of raw virtualization muscle."

a note, you can return the full path of the exe as the icon file and farr should load the appropriate icon from the file.. i think.

UrlSnooper / Re: No network adapters detected!?
« Last post by mouser on December 16, 2009, 12:29 PM »
As ixxo says, forget about automatic network adapter detection -- as it says on its window when it cant find an adapter, there are many reasons why this may fail and it's not important. the issue is really whether your network adapter is available in the options.

And the key to see if this is a url snooper program or a winpcap problem is to run that windump test.

RENI, you pasted your results from windump, which says that winpcap/windump can only see one generic dialup adapter -- and that seems to be what urlsnooper on your computer can see.. so there's really nothing more urlsnooper can do i'm afraid, as it is doing all that winpcap can do.

Assuming that this adapter is not the one you actually use, then the situation is as ixxo says, and it may be that you are using an adapter that winpcap is not able to work with.  Best thing in such case is to go to the winpcap support page and see if you can find any solution.

Yet another 0-day pdf exploit in the wild
http://community.ca....day-in-the-wild.aspx

that post tells you how to disable pdf rendering inside your browser from automatically happening.

i think that one of the worst ideas in the history of computing was letting adobe pdf render by default in the browser panel.. it's one of the more consistently exploited vulnerabilities.

no one should have pdf rendering in the browser on by default.  someone needs to make a page dedicated to helping people test if they do, and walking them through the process of disabling it if they do.  such a website would make a great little NANY project by the way.

Ashraf at dotTech.org has a great entry on the contest up:

He makes a great point that if you enter NANY and discovered it from another website you call home, why not show some pride in your home site and let us know who you are "representing" -- maybe we can send a reward mug to that site as well :)
