Is the WOT scorecard for JOCR or for the hosting service site, home.megapass.co.kr?

I'm not very familiar with WOT - only recently installed it - but it looks like the rating is for the hosting service:

This site has a poor reputation.

This makes it a no-no for me. I really don't like the idea of programs that disable themselves if they can't phone home.
I used to use JOCR when I was at work.  JOCR is freeware but depends on Microsoft Office components.  I don't have a licensed copy of Microsoft Office at home, so bought a license for ABBYY because it's free-standing.  I'd have hesitated if I'd known about this bad behaviour :(

Warning: Web of Trust (WOT) gives the JOCR site a poor reputation.

Why is the service disabled by something .. dunno yet.  (Zemana and WinPatrol are two possibles).

I run WinPatrolPlus, and it hasn't stopped ABBYY Screenshot Reader.

working in a command prompt window and you would like to save all of its input/output (everything you see) to a text file
I haven't tried it, but TCC/LE has a "Tee" command:
TEE

Purpose: Copy standard input to both standard output and a file.
Format: TEE [/A /D /T] file...

file        One or more files that will receive the "tee-d" output.

Usage:
TEE is normally used to "split" the output of a program so that you can see it on the display and also save it in a file. It can also be used to capture intermediate output before the data is altered by another program or command.

mouser has a point about simpler utilities.  There are several, none of which I've tried.  They include PromptPal, PowerCMD, ColorConsole and Console, see e.g. these DC threads:

I think I'm not understanding you, but FWIW, there were old, as in back in the days of DOS, utilities like PC Magazine's Peruse, a TSR scrollback buffer.  I think JP Software's TCC/LE has a screen scrollback buffer too, and is compatible with recent versions of Windows (I haven't tried Peruse on Vista Home Premium, but it worked reasonably well on XP).

Otherwise, can you just redirect the output to a file, and read the file later, or with a Tail-type utility?

Is there any adware-toolbarware-bloatware embeded in the installer at all?,
I don't think so.  It wants to call home occasionally.  I wondered why it kept starting with Windows, until I realised I hadn't unchecked "Start with Windows" during installation, see my embarassment in the thread Screenshot tool with built-in OCR?

General Software Discussion / Re: save ebay auctions webpages

For what it's worth, Firefox has an extension that allows on to save web pages as PDFs.
Presumably you could print the page to a PDF with one of the many PDF virtual printers,  e.g.  PDF995?

Actually I think you should be able to put the line
PORTABLE=TRUE
mouser, do you mean that one should be able to, but currently can't because you haven't coded it yet?

I forgot to add, dialog box extender, like FileBox Extender etc.  Gives you a menu of folders you've visited, plus favourites folders, etc.

Hmmm... I am really not sure. I suspect that I was flailing around on Google trying to find the answer to a question that I had about software [...]

Post New Requests Here / Re: App to batch rename to specific name?
« Last post by rjbull on March 16, 2010, 04:09 PM »
A vast array of batch file enhancers exists, including small programs that check the time/date so you could make the batch file run when you wanted.  You'd have to check to make sure they ran on recent versions of Windows.  Take a look at these two pages from the Free Software for DOS Web site:
And on no account overlook Horst Schaeffer's Batch tools page.

I used to run it constantly on XP at work, for all sorts of things.  I'm not using it at present because I'm now on Vista Home Premium at home, and PowerPro has to be run as admin (I think), which is a constant pain with UAC.

The sort of things I used it for, as far as I can remember:
  • Macro scripts, for doing things like pressing buttons, sending text and arrows to controls, etc.  This was a great convenience and timesaver.  PowerPro allowed you to make these window-specific, i.e., the buttons for launching the scripts only appeared on certain windows and not others.
  • Text snippets, e.g. for pasting titles of things into Outlook e-mails.  Similarly, one of them would put a button onto TED Notepad's title bar but only when it was editing a particular file.  When pressed, it would give a menu of standard texts to paste.
  • The scheduler; I never bothered with the Windows Scheduler when I had this.  Easy to set up and use, much easier than 'cron' syntax.  Can be used to pop up alarms and messages as well as to run programs.  I used it to run various cleanup routines, for example.
  • Window-specific sticky notes, i.e., notes that would pop up, stuck to the right-hand side of the window, when I was editing a particular file.
I didn't use all PowerPro's features, by any means.  Some, like the sticky notes (normal uses), were just too clumsy.  Other features, like the timers and multiple desktops, I never had a use for.

Bits du Jour have an offer on CaptureSaver, scheduled for Saturday 20th March 2010.  I haven't tried it, but here's the blurb from their Web site, which makes it sound a bit like Surfulater or UltraRecall:

Cashper, maybe I'm missing something again, please can the currently-focussed tab be closed with Control-F4 or Control-W?

The filtering that allows you to search-within-a-search is nice, but please can there be a hotkey to put the cursor in the filter box?  Maybe one that sort of "tabs" between the different filter options, File, Folder, etc.?

Thanks...

General Software Discussion / Re: Undelete utilities?

@Darwin:  it's strange that some apps can recover files that others can't, but if it meant serious data loss, I see why you'd keep several.  Pity that some of them are so expensive, as is GetDataBack.

@sajman99:  I didn't realise that Piriform offered a portable version of Recuva.  Thanks!  I found mention of DiskDigger in a couple of other places, Best Free Data Recovery / File Un-delete Utility (that one's Gizmo) and File Recovery - 17 Free File Recovery Programs - Undelete Files (can't remember if those were in the original thread, and too lazy to check)

As far as I can see, Boxer and UE are both good editors, and both way more than I need.  I'm just sorry that Boxer's lack ot text wrap made me abandon it.  If that feature had been present I might not have looked elsewhere at all, unless or until the limitation on bookmarks became too important.

I'd have to add, though, that for typing personal letters, essays or the like, I still much prefer my WordStar-style DOS text editor, VDE.  WordStar-style operation is still the best way to move chunks of text around, when your text is writing rather than computer-related.

General Software Discussion / Undelete utilities?
« Last post by rjbull on March 11, 2010, 04:36 PM »
Has anyone any further thoughts on undelete utilities since this 2007 thread, File-Saver (file undeletion utility) $40 off TODAY ?  Specifically, is it really worth paying for undelete utilities, or are the free ones good enough now?
1768
I actually asked for text wrap in the Boxer Yahoo! Group.  It looks like I didn't ask about bookmarks.  I feel slightly "guilty" at not upgrading when the author has added a feature I wanted, but time has moved on, my requirements have changed, I have other editors now, and my income has disappeared.  If he had added more bookmarks, I'd have been more tempted, perhaps.  But as things are, I'm in a save money mode.  Well... more accurately, I've already spent enough on software this week...  :-[
1769
I think V - The File Viewer can do this, to a point, but think it could be improved.  I just e-mailed the author to ask.

Didn't you set up some saved searches?
1772
I use Firefox add-on "QuoteURLText" for this.

I found that one when searching, but ignored it because of this text in one of the reviews:

It could only be better if it included the URLs in the selection.

I assumed that meant that if you copied a section of a page containing a number of URLs, it wouldn't include both the text and the URL itself.  Is that so?
1773
@cranioscopical:  Thanks for the check.  I still think only ten bookmarks is very limited for an editor like Boxer, even if common sense tells me that one is most probably in trouble if using that many.
1774
cranioscopical, thanks for the offer: please, is the bookmark system the same as before?

PopUp Wisdom / Re: What's the best text editor for editing PopUp Wisdom?
« Last post by rjbull on March 06, 2010, 02:43 PM »
TED Notepad - excellent small, fast freeware editor with a plethora of useful tools built in.  For word wrap, choose the regular version, not the RE clone.  You need to check word wrap in Options, then Control-W wraps/unwraps text to screen.  TED Notepad has tools to deal with duplicates in the same file, i.e. remove them.  This won't work with different files at the same time: for that I suggest you investigate a Windows port of the Unix command-line tool "comm."  See my post here:  Re: Compare text files and keep only the DIFFERENT lines?
