General Software Discussion / Re: What is the currently best Desktop Search software?

I think that the main thing that you will notice, cyberdiva, is the speed at which both Locate32 and Everything come back with results. Scary fast if you haven't tried them before! At least it was for me.

I've read through most of this thread with great interest, but I confess that I'm now bleary-eyed and still a bit confused.  Currently, my search program of choice is Copernic Desktop Search, version 3.0,0.  It finds just about everything I want except my email messages (because I use Mulberry as my email client); for email I happily use Mailbag Assistant.   What I'm trying to understand is what programs like Archivarius, Locate32, and others do that I don't already get from Copernic.   I feel a little foolish asking this after so much discussion has already taken place, but I honestly haven't been able to figure this out.   Copernic finds my files VERY quickly, it does full-text searches, the price is right....  I'd be more than willing to add another program, even one for which I'd have to pay, if it offered me something important that Copernic doesn't already do.   Thanks in advance for your thoughts.

Edbro explained it very well.

I do have need for a file search tool, one that can find text within most of my files, but much more often than that I just need to find all files containing certain text within the filename. Locate32 and Everything both do that well. I have been using Locate32 for a while and I just installed Everything about a month and a half ago. I often search with both, one after another, when I am looking for files. I would prefer just to use one but I decided to give them a side-by-side look for now. And I do come across results in one that are not in the other occasionally - but that has been very infrequent.

It is much less frequently that I really need to search within documents for specific terms.

Hey Outertech guy,

A question for you:  Why is there no export template for Firefox 3? For that matter, there is no direct way to export my Linkman bookmarks/favorites to Firefox 3 at all. One must export in the Firefox 2 format and then import/convert those to get them into Firefox 3. It's not like Firefox 3 is that new, after all. You designed all your new Firefox features - which by the way are great - to work with Firefox 3, so why no export capabilities for Firefox 3? Is the Firefox 3 bookmarks format difficult to accommodate? Or just something that you haven't gotten around to doing yet?

Thank you.

I apologize if anything I posted about France offended anyone here.

For a long time four of my co-workers were French and two were Italian (meaning born in France and Italy - not just their ancestry), and we all used to "insult" each other with jokes/slurs about our respective country's history or heritage. All in good fun, of course!

I just didn't think we had such sensitive ninnies..  er... members here in the Living Room.   ;) 8)

Me? I'm still trying to talk myself into purchasing Archivarius!

Of course "myself" has always been a stubborn b@st@rd....  :-[

Mr. Darwin, sir: Are you using the latest version of X1 Professional? I was all set to get that and a long-time user, whom I trust, warned me that it is not quite what it used to be; that it has a lot more problems than previous versions.

Are you seeing this also?

Thanks!

BRU is infamous for its GUI, which is considered cluttered...

On the contrary, Darwin, I love the fact that every option is in front of me, instead having to tab through endless menus, tabs, and dropdown lists. Same goes for Flexible Renamer, which recently got a version upgrade. I just set how I want for repetitive job, save it as a profile, then BAM! I'm done.

True, Zaine, but still it IS cluttered! At first glance it almost always appears overwhelming to someone viewing it for the first time. I found that it takes a few uses before you get comfortable with it.

Well, sort of comfortable, anyway!   :)

Thanks!

Jim

Then I guess you'd rather choose a country which was on the losing side on both World Wars during the twentieth century, like Germany for instance  ;)

But this is getting ridiculous, not to mention increasingly off-topic (mind you, Deozaan introduced the geopolitical subject in this thread).

Hey - I didn't start all this.  (I just jumped on it with both boots!  ;D   Lovingly, of course)

When I click on Help>Updates it opens a new tab in Firefox. Of course I have been using Linkman for a while and I know that I do indeed have ther default browser set in the Settings as Firefox.

I can't remember Linkman having ever launched IE in my experience with it. It usually does what you ask of it.

Thanks!

Jim

BTW, here's my reg key dealing with that:

Note that it doesn’t look like yours at all, cranial. Weird. Of course this is on an XP Pro machine.

Wouldn't Switzerland or France be a better name for the kitty who doesn't want to fight?

Ouch!

France? I don't get it
Switzerland is known for its neutrality, but France has been involved in many wars in the 20th century alone, and many more along its history

I guess winning is the key...  :D

Hehehe!   ;D

I love it! All of you, shaking your collective heads and tsk, tsk-ing the purchase of almost completely unused software applications -- and then saying that you will probably upgrade again anyway.  ;D  ;D  ;D

Err.. Makes me feel a little less stupid for continually upgrading two apps in particular that I know I don’t need and hardly ever even open.  :-[  But I've owned them since they were initially released and somehow MUST upgrade them!

Weird creatures we are...

Jim

BTW, the two are AW Icons by Lokas Software and Agent Forte - the Premium version AND their monthly newsgroup subscription. (Just got a notice about V.5 released and wouldn’t I like to upgrade???)

Oops - of course there is also AllWebMenus Pro - and I stopped designing web sites two years ago.  Aw man...

Well, let's see...

Maybe the notorious Windows Genuine Advantage fiasco, for which Microsoft subsequently offered confusing and conflicting MSKB articles on how to disable the "call home" part of it?

And then last summer there were the ominous "stealth updates", which rendered peoples' computers unable to do an XP Repair installation.

Those two come to mind the quickest.

[J-Mac]: I can see why someone may decide to stop developing! But even if they don’t continue, if I use the program for a decent length of time I feel I should donate if I can.

I may be wrong, but I think Bulk Rename Utility went from freeware (with a donation option) to adware. To me, that's the worst move you can make. Seeing a rotating ad such as the one in FoxIt is like a needle in my eye.

I just went and looked and I didn't see any purchase option for Bulk Rename Utility.

There is a $10 discount which makes this only $69 for new customers.

Neville,

I looked and didn't see the discount. The "Buy Now" link on the Surfulater home page says "Special offer inside" - which I thought was probably the $10 discount you mentioned here - but once I click on it the eSellerate cart shows the $79 price - no discount mentioned.

Has the discount expired?

Thanks!

I just downloaded the Linkman Free tonite from the Outertech website but it didn't live up to the reviews IMHO.  Once I told it to not install anything else, it offers quite a few and then tells you can remove them from add/remove which you cannot.

Upon restarting Firefox, it then opened a new window in IE 6 to a freeze.com news site which I did not want nor agree to.  So I immediately uninstalled it since it acted like malware to me.

It also had offered to to install SearchSquire and New.net.  I should have know better when it wanted to install from freeze.com but the name didn't jog my memory at first.

I was also suspicious when I downloaded a 4.5 meg file that I thought was Linkman Free and then during the install it downloaded something else.  who knows what.

Anyway the Revo Uninstaller did a good job in uninstalling it. I will run my a/v program tonite just to make sure  everything is gone.

My experience says "Stay away"!

Wow! I agree - stay far away from the so-called "free" version! The installation is "managed" by InstallIQ - what a treat. Here's a note about it that you can reach from a link on the Free Linkman page:

Also, take a look at the InstallIQ T&C's. It is like reading an "Adware Pledge of Allegiance"! And their Privacy Policy is, well... not. No privacy at all. It says that your personal information IS shared with just about anyone they wish - not only for email solicitation but also your home address for postal mail, and download a screensaver with ads in it, change your home page, change your browser's search engine, etc.

This is not acceptable at all. Outertech - I am shocked. Such a good paid product, yet you are making an adware/malware-laden version available at the same time. Not acceptable at all.

This gives me pause as to what may come to me in updates of my licensed Linkman Pro software. Outertech - can you tell us what your plans are there?

I have donated - at least once - to every developer whose freeware application I have tried and liked enough to continue using. To me that makes sense; I would like them continue development and that is one small way I can help to give that a chance. Of course the developer may still decide to give up on an application anyway. I have seen forums of freeware developers where there seems to be a constant supply of picky users demanding that they add this feature or change that feature - as if they have paid a year's salary to use the program when in reality they haven't paid a dime. I can see why someone may decide to stop developing! But even if they don’t continue, if I use the program for a decent length of time I feel I should donate if I can.

Another one to add to the list of lifetime licenses is MediaMonkey Gold license. AFAIK they have never reneged on this. they also offer a free version and a regular license that is good through one major upgrade cycle.

All I can say is that I purchased AnyDVD and CloneDVD (from Slysoft and ElaborateBytes respectively) just shy of five years ago and have been notified of all updates and upgrades. Never charged for one of them. And they have provided support much more quickly - and very helpful support - consistently over the whole life of the product thus far. Plus my licenses will remain lifetime, according to the news release from Gordon at Slysoft. I can't complain at all!

BTW, AnyDVD truly WAS a different product. THe original AnyDVD did, and still does, remove all protection from commercial DVD's in real time as you copy or rip them. AnyDVD-HD does the same but for HD-DVD and Blu-Ray disks. The format of those is different enough to justify an entirely new product IMO.

That is why it is a good idea to have your data files on a drive other than the system partition.

I do have all the data files that I can keep elsewhere on D: drive. But then there are the applications that insist on saving all data generated by their program in the Program Files directory, not to mention the ones that keep user data files in what MS calls the user directory: C:\Documents and Settings\username\Application Data.

I try to locate all those and sync a copy of them to another drive with SFFS.

Thanks!

I don’t know - they will have to get some actual products there before I'll look at it harder. I just checked out getting Returnil Premium with TrialPay but most of the items there are either services that I do not need, or subscriptions; subscriptions to magazines, credit report junk, and that sort of thing.

Nothing there like purchase a book or DVD at Amazon, or a USB Flash drive anywhere. That would be a draw for me.

I also have a $9.95 Spamex account. That allows my to create up to 500 disposable email addresses per year. I can give out a Spamex address and any replies/spam etc. to that address goes directly to Spamex, who then passes it along to me. The sender has no way of finding out my true email address, and I can also send messages to them again using that same address. It is worth more than the actual cost IMO!

Jim, I didn't know about Spamex, but I have been using Spamgourmet for a few years now (and I'm very happy with it ). While going over the features of Spamex, I realized they don't seem to be much different than those of Spamgourmet (which is free). I wonder if you have tried SG and, if you have, how does Spamex compare with it.

The only big difference I see is that Spamex will keep my throwaway addresses active as long as I need, and keep replying back to them/me until I decide to kill it. I can view a listing of all addresses there that I have used as well as which as still active. Also, it allows me to enter what site or sites I use that address for, what my username is at that site or those sites, and I can build some autoreplies using that info.

I don’t use those features much, admittedly, but for under $10 yearly it's a nice set of features!

Thanks!

I've been playing around with Librarian Pro, which is $29.95 and for which you receive a licence that allows you to install and activate under both Windows and OSX. You can also install it on as many machines as you like, as long as you're the main user of each machine. It will allow you to search Amazon for books, music, and dvd's and to specify the local amazon site you want to use (ie Canada, USA, UK, Germany, etc.). It will catalogue all media, including software, not just Books. Overall, it's pretty slick. I wish it would connect to more databases - at the moment it is almost as limited as are the latest generation of Collectorz apps. HOwever, it's only at version 1.4 and the developer may be receptive to adding more sources.

I'll have to take a look at that one. I did just start building a library in Library Thing, an online collection vehicle. Interesting so far.

Thanks!
