Site/Forum Features / Re: About the Prize Optimizer Used in Our Drawings
« Last post by urlwolf on May 16, 2006, 06:49 AM »
Mouser, this is really cool.
You really go out of your way to try to be just.
This site should be an example on "how to do things" in many domains, not only coding and testing progs.

If world politics were 'Optimized' in a similar way, things would be much better.

If you are going to release this as a general purpose algorithm (or just for drawings, I dunno), try to 'market' it well so many people see the potential...

Thanks a lot

skrommel,
Thanks a lot for implementing all this so fast.

However, I agree with jdmarch: I cannot get the new version 1.1 to work.
I get a different error though.
In line 368, I get:
error" ERROR" is not a valid keyname. The current thread will exit.

I'm using the latest version of ahk (1.0.44 -may 15th)

using launchy for a while, I have noted that it produces 100% cpu peaks for a while. I often kill it because I think it went brain-dead... it may be rebuilding the index, I don't know. It doesn't produce any disk activity. I think it's buggy (at least for me).

great review
I'm struggling with GTD and MLO myself.
Lately I just don't even open it, I know more or less what's pending...
But MLO is really great for keeping long term projects from falling 'out of mind'... it works for me as a suggestion maker, not so much as a TODO list.

So it seems that with two previous bat! super-users converted, opera's M2 should receive a better review, or at least a mention, in the mail app comparison page... don't you think? Mouser?

I ditched the bat for Opera as well, but I have to admit I didn't put much effort into learning the ins and outs of the bat.

hmm, I use it too.
There is something I don't like about it. Even when minimized, it seems to stop all system activity, steal a few CPU cycles for itself (only a few ms), and then update its graphs.

If I'm reading something using opera's middle-click autoscroll, I like it to run smooth. If procExp is running in the background, it becomes jumpy.

Previous versions (9.xx, without multigraphs for each app) didn't have this problem.

HI Helen,

Dreamhost.com is very good. Another highly recommended one is hostgator.com.
I don't know anything about the ones you mentioned.

Good luck,

Fantastic tip, non-troppo. It goes a long way to solve the problem. However, I don't want to be distracted by notifications to all the acc. I have, so I found an alternative (better than switching off the notifications at all):

I use M2 as standalone (mugin) to check all the acc. that are not urgent, and leave my primary account active in my main copy of opera. That works for me. Ideally, one should be able to activate notifications independently for each account (posted that on the wish list)

Guys, opera is THE application to look at in terms of GUI. As non-troppo demostrated, anything is ultra-configurable. It is very keyboard friendly too.

Problem solved. I think M2 is the best client out there, even though it still has issues.

Thanks a lot, non-troppo.

hmm,
I think DONATION CODER has  a mixture of forums and static, normal html pages. Most info spans the two formats. E.g., the reviews have some forum topics. The problem is that these two are not well connected. sometimes there is a link to the forum topic, but some other times I just found it by accident.

Plus the content is so actively changing that it is difficult to keep track of it! E.g., the backup software review... After Genie backup was crowned, two or three other applications have appeared that could dispute the crown. By the way, I have a really bad experience with genie backup support, they really are clueless about some topics.

How to solve this? I have no idea. Many sites have a mixture of forums, blogs, and static pages... but the cocktail is not always good.

I'd be very interested in seeing what examples other people post...

Another great little application! Thanks a lot!
One feature request... Could we have keyboard shortcuts to change tasks instead of having to go to the tray icon? That'd be a lot faster.

Another one... (this is just visual)... having a different tray icon per task, instead of the generic 'H' from autohotkey! With the new coming review on icon editors, I can see how I would spend some more time playing around with icons...

Hi Hamradio,

Can you consider in your review if the application can extract/change icons from other applications? E.g., if I want to substitute the big red 'O' icon in opera with something else...

I have found one program that does it, but it's kind of shaky:

Thanks a lot

Can you quickly descrbe how you conigured wsw? I have been struggling to make it log me with my username and take me to my unread topics...

Hi mouser,

Thanks for the suggestion. I have already tried it, but it does the same thing as MHTArchive. What I actually need is a bookmark manager (with drag and drop capability and ability to create folders within it) with an integrated browser. Only difference is, instead of links pointing to www, it will point to a local file. Now I think I'm more clear. Hopefully this will bring in more suggestions.
-web_stalker (May 07, 2006, 09:49 AM)

sounds exaclty like website-watcher, by the same author, and mithic application loved in this forum.

Maybe I'm not getting what you are saying. Another possibility is Opera + Obook or firefox + scrapbook. drag and drop, folders, local links.

otherwise, if you need to mirror an entire site instead of a page you could use wget from the comand line by using the -r flag.

 Hope this helps

Thanks for the answers.
Here is what I have found after a brief test.
web2text was last updated... exactly at the end of last century. It leaves tags
behind and could not produce a passable output with the html that I used.

html2text is written in visual basic (of all possible languages, that would be
my LAST option for this job!) and is really slow. I can actually see a progress
bar moving when the conversion should be instantaneous. Not suited for batch
processing, but comes with code, so no problem. The output is ok, not great. For
example, it misses paragraph separators and returns a compact block of text. Not
ready for prime use.

html code export actually doesn't export to plain text. It looks very professional and
useful, but not for my purpose.

links (.99) for the terminal doesn't have flags to dump to text. It was lynx
actually, I had them confused. The win versions that I have tried didn't work
and it looks a bit like abandonware (most sites that hosted it are now broken
links, at least for windows)

So I still haven't found what I'm looking for :)
Thanks a lot

This is something that I needed long time ago and now I'm needing again.
I wish there were a program to batch-process html to text in an easy way,
stripping tables, ads, sitemaps, frames, etc and getting only article text.

Since there is a huge variability in how people use html and each site has a
different formatting, a general solution is difficult I guess. I used to use
perl + some parsing modules, but the solutions would break easily (a bit more
robust than simple regular expressions, but still).

Then, I think I moved to use dumps from text-based browers. 'Links' actually
supports frames, which is nice. The most popular one is 'lynx'.

http://links.sourcef...t/download/binaries/

Still, it is a lot of work and it needs fine-tuning.

Do you know of any program that offers that, together with a GUI and some other
niceties? There must be one out there...
Thanks a lot

If trigger=Space, I get the popup after I type space, e.g.: _foo _. but it never autocompletes.
You actually have to enter a space, not the Space keyword. (hmm) to get it to work. That was confusing me.

Nice work!

A few ideas/feature requests if I may. As far as I know <- using the nice autocompletion here :D, you have to edit the shorcuts file to add a new one. There is a nice script that lets you select a block, hit a shortcut, and have the selection added to the file and the script reloaded. Here:

http://www.autohotke.../docs/Hotstrings.htm
(Hotstring helper)

It could be handy to add that to the end of the hotkeyScript.

Another idea would be to have a key to undo the expanded expresion quickly.

What do you think?

yes, yes, I know that. I'm a long-time ahk user.
It's just that the trigger key doesn't trigger anything.
Here is an example of the code that gets generated:

.ini file:

Sorry to be the one to ask the dumb question but... I can't really make it work. Running the script, I can see the popups, but it never does any replacement. I wonder why. I have tried different triggers, and no trigger. Nothing works. I have deactivated my other ahk scripts just in case. I don't think I have any remapping to the spacebar at all (too obvious= I would not be able to write spaces).

Any ideas?

Ok, I forgot that M2 reads RSS and newsgroups wonderfully.
You have also tags, although reduced.
It's like all the advatages of gmail (fast search, tags) combined with all the advantages of a standalone program (more options, no delay due to server communication, reload page, etc)

General Software Discussion / Re: email client. Opera's M2 vs. the Bat

Thanks Allen,

That was really, really helpful.
After wasting 1.5 days mocking around with the bat, I still haven't being able
to import my mail from opera (!). So I'm going to be the one that defends M2
here :)

First, advantages
the contact completion is a lot faster in M2
The search is far better than any other mail system
   the keyboard shortcuts are obvious
Having the mailer integrated in the browser helps a lot (less app. switching)
much better HTML suppor while being secure.
Separate files for individual mails, so no risk of losing a month's worth of
email if a smart antivirus program decides to delete a mailbox to 'clean'
Disadvantages (w.r.t. the bat)
   No spelling built in
   No templates
   No separate accounts

Here is how I solved the disadvantages and will stick to M2
Spelling: I have a shortcut that brings up VIM 7 (bestest editor ever). That
gives me Spelling AND word completion with tab (and parentheis balancing,
etc. Do you know how often yo repeat a word in a mail? save keystrokes!)

Templates: using tSkeleton (vim plugin) or AHK, that should not be an issue:)

No separate accounts. This sounds like a big show stopper, but it's not.
since the search is immediate, just search for as many accounts as you have
(e.g., [email protected], [email protected], etc), they will show up as a virtual
   folder. You can see

The only problem is now to create different shortcuts to answer mails with your
different 'personas'   (e.g., [email protected], [email protected], etc). That, I haven't
solved yet.

Cheers.

General Software Discussion / email client. Opera's M2 vs. the Bat
« Last post by urlwolf on April 28, 2006, 09:41 AM »
Hi All,

I'm transitioning from being a full-time M2 user to trying the bat!. I know that
this forum has plenty of users of both so I thought it'd be one of the best
places to ask.  I didn't like much what I saw first with the bat. It had
problems retrieving gmail mail, but it seems to be due to opera sucking the mail
first. So I disabled the mail checking in opera and now it seems to be doing ok.

I have several old acc., both POP and IMAP. Following advice (that I probably
got from here too :) ) I plan to just forward everything to one gmail acct. and
them access it using POP. That way there are always a local (HD) copy of my mail
and another one in the gmail servers (that will be there forever, as it seems
solid enough).

My problems
(1) SPAM. Is there any way to tell the bat not to download the messages that
have being marked as spam by gmail? Is there any way I can mark mail as spam
locally on the bat, and have it update gmail's markup as well? Is the spam
filtering easy to configure?

(2) Searches. M2 has the fastest search I have seen ever. Pity it doesn't keep
different inboxes for different accounts, otherwise it'd be ideal. Is the search
in the bat up to par?

(3) keyboard shortcuts. I'm used to ctrl + e to open a new mail. I redefined
that shortcut in the bat, but it was assigned to a default action (edit email)
and I don't see how to deactivate it. Is there any way.

Finally, any M2 defenders wanting to say a piece here before I completely switch away from it?

Thanks
1775
But on the other hand, I see that you use AHK too and have not had problems I
suppose. Maybe this is worth a thread or at least a question in the AHK forum...
