Living Room / Re: tip: check your mouse before going to red alert.
« Last post by cmpm on February 17, 2008, 06:49 PM »
Try turning off smooth and auto scrolling in your internet options.
Or firefox options.
Then go to the mouse in control panel.
Set it to scroll 3 lines at a time.

Personally never installed mouse software for my optical mouse.
After a reformat.
So it reads as a regular ps/2 compatible mouse.
It's a Microsoft wired optical mouse with a wheel of course.

I disabled the middle button. The wheel button.
When I had the software installed.
Cuz it kept bring up the arrows in a circle for scrolling.
Which was annoying to me,
cuz I'd accidently click the wheel while scrolling.

Sometimes I have to reset the scroll to the above after making other changes or cleaning my compouter. I don't know why, but it will reset to the way I like it. And scroll smoothly without jumping around like it did.

You could check your event logs in 'administrative tools' in 'control panel'.

See if anything is getting recorded every minute.

I use it for quick internet links.
It saves me time going through all my bookmarks.
I keep the ones I visit most frequently in RocketDock.

It has the option to change the default icon to the icon of your choice.

If you use - http://www.aignes.com/deadlink.htm ,
AM-Deadlink.

You will have all your icons for your bookmarks in a folder, and this folder can be added to the icon changing options.

I don't use it for 'running programs', that's what my taskbar is for, for me anyway.

Google -playlist manager- and there are quite a few,
though some are not free and some you may not like.

A list of free graphic programs for Macs.
I'm surprised that function isn't built into the OS.

Here's a few that work with Macs.

also, the Gimp works on Macs as well...

Run this Curt, if you are familiar with this kind diagnostic stuff.
And still having problems with your computer.
It has a beginner, intermediate and advanced modes.

Discussed here a little bit.
I've been using it for a while and it works well.

Thanks Curt,

It didn't change any Visual Effects, but I only have 5 of them checked.
So for someone that may have them all checked, it could change that.

And I'm staying with version 1.0 for now.
Just to see what else I can find.
If anything.

In System Properties-Advanced-Performance-Settings-
Advanced Tab, Under Process scheduling-
TQ Opt. changed it to having the processor to -
Adjust for best performance-*Background services*.
I had it on Programs
The Memory is still set to Programs.

My paging file is still set to the same settings I had it on.

I'm not wounded, if that's what you mean.
People can think and say what they want.
The only mind I can take care of is mine.

Heck, list as many optimizers as you want to.
I am interested, perhaps others are also.

Though I don't like gaotd,
except for the comments where there are some sound ones.
With good info and other places with other software.

I just realized I used version 1.0.

And there is a 2.0.

Curt, you must have used 2.0.
I don't know the diff but I will try 2.0 sometime.
In 1.0 there is only one option, one optimize button.
2.0 has more options.

Here's a google search for it.
Some had problems, others didn't.
I think if you already have some optimizer then they would conflict possibly.
The top one is 2.0, then there are some reviews.
And of course we are in there too :).

Curt,

I think everything it can do, it did.
I don't think it tweaked much considering the time it took-1 second.

Everything loads faster on reboot, once you are past the logon screen.
In fact it was so fast that Firefox loaded before the rest of the icons in my tray could load.
I have 12 programs loading at startup.

The thing I saw was that I did not get the icons of all the programs that are supposed to be running on startup, but they are running when I checked task manager.
All I had to do was log off and log back on to get all the icons in the tray.
But that has been a problem off and on with XP anyway.

And fodder, I don't think you know everything that runs in XP do you?
What every .dll is for, every file does?

I'm not trying to sell this damn program.
It's free anyway.
I wanted to know if anyone else has used it.

And I didn't check the obvious things like page file settings and performance settings yet.
I forgot to check those.
It will probably be this weekend or the next before I can see more. And I want to go through their forums and see what is being said.

I don't have a lot of time to play, that's why I limited my question to 'has anyone used or heard of it' or whatever I said up there.

ok?!

If you don't have some kind of way to test unknown software safely, then I wouldn't.
I have one computer I use for that purpose.

Well, I've looked at 'process monitor' and don't really know what I'm seeing except when there's an icon, like my AV icon.

But anyways-

No changes in services and processes that I can see using sysinternals process explorer.

Full/Complete scans of-
AVG
A-Squared
Super Anti Spyware

Nothing turned up.

When I ran the optimizer, it took about 1 second and then you had to reboot. I'm going to browse the forums here in a bit, as I get some more coffee going here.

Going to run Ccleaner and Gladys Utilities in a bit too.

O and I have old Scotty on Patrol too.
No Barks....yet.

I don't know how to go much deeper to find things, hence the reason for this thread asking if anyone else has used this program.

-edit- I mean 'Glary Utilities' , for some reason Gladys is stuck in my brain for that set of programs...brain glitch....

Yeah, I'd like to know what it's doing to my computer right now....lol...

When I get back home I'll check it out some more.
See if I can find any changes with my limited abilities.
I'll check process' and services and run some scans.

I have two machines that are about the same.
So I can compare pretty easily.
They both have similar things on them.

There is a forum about the program but I didn't have time to read any of it yet.

Has anyone else tried this little program?
I installed and ran it on my test machine and it made a good difference.
I couldn't find out what it does exactly.
But I'm out of time today.
Will check it out some more after work or tomorrow.

This explains it a little.

And I found it through this site.

This might be useful for what you are saying.

It's helped me a bit.

Some virus protection software "proxies" the connection and will show the upload as 100% complete even though the proxy is still sending the data to the server. Please be patient and let it run. It will refresh upon completion.

Picked up this bit of info from one of my storage sites.
ADrive mentioned this about uploading to ADrive, so I thought it might also be a problem with people who have "some virus protection software "proxies" ". -Whatever that is.-?
Along with the built in ie7 problem, maybe it can be nailed.

Don't know if it got figured out mouser, but I thought of this thread when I read that on ADrive-the quote in this post that is.
1771
No, I wasn't trying to belittle or anything like that at all.
I was thinking maybe a theme program could have changed things.
Never used one myself, so I don't know.
1772
If the window is maximized you can't change it sometimes.
On certain windows...can't remember which ones-Firefox for one.
Just tried it.

But if you click the middle button that will give you back your resizing arrows on all sides. That's been my experience....as I recall....
Do you still have 3 buttons up there in the right corner?
1773
There seems to be quite a few choices.
Although I've never tried any of them.
I've always manually resized and windows remembers.
But I can see how it would be handy if it was a light weight application.

Here's what I found in a search.
Maybe someone has tried some of these.

I appreciate the info fodder, i can use all the advice i can get.
Yeah I'm a bit aware of the different slots for amd and intel.
They just seem to be in a big hurry and they have to slow down to sell what they already did.
Instead of improving the thing further and skip some of these various things.
But they didn't ask me...lol.

You know, I still wonder what they are holding back, till the core 2s move out of production and sales.

And for the topic at hand.
I want to know why they have dropped down to two or even one pci slot on the machines now.
Yes, I know the pcie and sata stuff takes room but sheesh, 2?
It's either more USBs or another computer.

And I don't think I can do a Mac only. I'd have PC withdrawals or something. I would like one of those G5's though with windows and ox-tiger or leopard or whatever cat they are now.

Yes, I'm still investigating, fodder.
That more expensive board would have 2 dual cores which is effectively a quad.
Personally I'm wanting to stay with Intel.
But AMD is much more direct in their approach.

Intel-Pent D, Pent Dual Core, Intel Core Duo.
pffft, Annoying, what's next? P2?

AMD went from socket 939 to AMD2.
Their processors are easily discernible compared to Intel, imo.

And they both leap frog each other.
The Pent D and x2 were a test of the real thing.
Both companies could do better with real dual core socketS.

Shoot I had an old server with dual P3 sockets.
I know they can do it.

Anyways the 4 PHD guy who runs our tech dept says get a Mac. :)
Which can run osx or whatever and windows on the same machine.
Funny guy, Yes it's faster, But my income ain't that fast!!??

The Intel vs AMD war marches on and on and on..........
