Living Room / Re: Five Reasons Why People Hate Apple
« Last post by rgdot on December 01, 2010, 08:29 AM »
I am not sure where the idea that Apple is indeed superior comes from, the material and design may be modern and admittedly superior in the specific components used but problems using it is not less if you take into account its market share (100 people using PC you hear 50 complaints...10 people using Apple you hear 5 complaints)
In my experience any way, I don't do Apple tech support or anything but I hear about this and that issue pretty often. I am referring to Mac vs PC and not iPad, iPod or iPhone

The problem with the US in particular is that these actions create anger directed at 'big government' instead of at those who are governing. The latter is a bigger problem in my opinion but it is also fixable by people voting differently, way differently...

General Software Discussion / Re: Strange Google Chrome Problem
« Last post by rgdot on November 23, 2010, 05:01 PM »
Update if anyone cares, see my post above:

Every Windows session where I use Chrome my power settings stop working. Even when I close Chrome completely (and make sure via task manager and other process apps that it and all (that I can see any way) dependencies are killed). Only remedy is when I restart PC or go to power setting and 'reapply' the Turn Off Monitor and other settings. It has been happening for so long (various plugins have come and gone) that I am sure it can't be anything else, only thing in common is when Chrome is used.
I have never tried to post about it in Chrome forums or groups or whatever...because I suspect I will get 'Chrome can't possibly do that' line

I searched and asked and there actually were a few similar complaints about Chrome messing system power setting. No solutions that I could see just hopes that newer versions will fix it somehow. This is still not solved, at least not on my somewhat antiquated XP SP3.

A stranger thing did happen though, the last couple of days I am having another problem with Chrome. Using it I sometimes lose wireless connection and to my shock it is also not only me (google "google chrome wireless connection") In this case some people blame routers and my reaction is of course... no matter how cheap my router may or may not be I don't think I should base it on the browser I use. So for now it's back to Firefox...

This sounds very non-technical but .....Chrome is interfering a lot with the system basics and it's unacceptable

Just buy the most expensive one in the shop and be done with it  :P

PS I agree, the naming is confusing. I definitely saw i5s in the market before i3s so it really does have to do with sneaky marketing too.

General Software Discussion / Re: Slash your windows boot time
« Last post by rgdot on November 14, 2010, 06:23 PM »
Long time ago, just by removing unneeded services and apps (using only msconfig) I cut system startup time a lot.
I would say application startup time is more important, anything from Firefox to higher end stuff like CAD software, etc. can really be slow on some systems

Posted earlier about godaddy...for one of my old domains I have as contact a @canada.com address. @canada.com email is shutting down in a few weeks.

Please someone try and edit your email (registrant, administrator, etc.) on godaddy. Still can't do it, some gibberish about a 'preset profile'. I hope it's me who is dumb because otherwise  ::)

Just because there is a product in the box doesn't mean it's worth (anywhere near) what you were charged for it, or any more than the box it came in.

Scareware, you get your product, you pay your money...fair deal right?

Insurance companies, Constantly try to over insure everybody for everything ... seriously, are you really worried that that many things might actually happen to you? I have full coverage insurance on my truck, because the bank says so... (hay that's a freebie example) I got rear ended by a hit and run driver. Now, do you really think I was stupid enough to tell the insurance company about that?!? Hell no. Why you ask?
First I get hit with the deductable (so they don't really "cover" the damages)
Second my rates go up (Oh goody that'll teach my to stop at a red light in front of some jackass on a cell phone)
Third, the resale value of my truck goes through the floor...because the insurance company reports it to carfax.

So WTF am I paying these people for? I fixed the damn bumper myself.

Investment companies, It's amazing how they manage to get filthy rich in the process of loosing other peoples money ain't it? Oh but they provided a service... Yeah a funeral service for your savings.

I could probably think of a few more, but the wife says it's dinner time. :)

I just wanted to say +1 to this
(I know I am not adding anything to the discussion, not for the first time either)

Do you mean Zentimo? I successfully registered it around the time I posted about it, above. Or have I misunderstood you?

Yes sorry I meant the site name. I was remembering the times when people would try to jump on expired domains (some still do)

Flash as a video tool (youtube, etc.) should go away. Flash banners I am seeing less or may be I am not paying attention.

Haven't upgraded yet and may not but as far as I can tell (not that there are any new screenshots that I can find) almost everything new is in the back end. My impression, without having used it, is did this require a version bump to 4?

Canada's infrastructure is poor for a developed country. Right now my DSL is around 2.5/0.4.

Problem goes from lack of infrastructure spending by the likes of Bell (phone) and Rogers (cable) right down to DSLAMs and even neighborhood wiring.

Sorry to hear that. As long as this doesn't push you a tad towards Apple it's not all that bad  ;)
Of course the money lost and stress are bad :)
