General Software Discussion / Re: eBook Reader alternate to Acrobat?
« Last post by siouxdax on March 06, 2009, 03:57 PM »
After trying out various options, I think that staying with Acrobat 8 Pro is best for me. I should just keep it simple and use just one program, except for when I have to deal with djvu files.

Well, I hate to say this, but Home Library is just awful, in my opinion. It's virtually barren of any sort of options. I think I'll try to create a database for my eBooks in MediaMan.

So is it worth creating an account to get the app?

I used to use an application specific to ebooks called My Ebook Library, but the developer and his site have disappeared and I can't install it on my new PC and add my books.

It's an ebook library management and cataloging application that has the ability to look up info online based on the book's ISBN, and can rename files according to the correct name of the book and its author. The application made you find the ISBN yourself, either within the book or on amazon.com, and then it would pull the rest of the info from the developer's cached database (which is now gone).

Since then, another developer, that was also a user and lover of the same software, has decided to recreate its functionality (and then some) in his own application.

His is supposed to have the ability to automatically scan the books to find the ISBN contained within the books themselves, and then pull the additional data directly from amazon, thereby making it that much better. (it also has backup/import/export options the original didn't have)

I have not tried his app, but I may plan on it at some point. I am just waiting till he finishes it first.

His alpha/beta/whatever it is, is currently free, but he plans on charging for it once it's finished. That's why I am waiting. I don't want to try it, fall in love with it and get hit with a surprise price tag that I can't afford, when the final version is released.

But if you would like to give it a try, it's called Home Library

For my DVDs, Books, etc I use MediaMan. My eBook collection is rather extensive, but I just want to be able to have the file names capitalized and clean looking. As far as a catalog of my eBooks is concerned, I have my own little personal Dewey Decimal System. I'm just a freak about clean and captialized file names. :)

Yikes! I'm gonna have to read over the manual very carefully. The app looks like a NASA control panel...

Yes, I stand chastened and rebuked. I doubt I could really throw a curve-ball to your guys. I'm a computer addict, but know nothing about programming. I just can't get over how helpful (and timely) you guys are.

The toolbars are optional. I certainly don't have them and won't add them.

Ah. Well I skimmed over a couple of reviews and one guy was furious about the toolbar issue. He probably doesn't know how to leave a checkbox alone. I'll give it a shot!

Uh-oh... Foxit Reader apparently installs toolbars into your web browser; something I (and most people) detest. Yikes. Maybe Acrobat isn't so bad after all. When I open it, I keep it open if I plan on doing any reading for the day. I'll still check out some other options though.  :)

Thanks all!

I'm starting to sound like a broken record, asking about little programs left and right, but I have an idea for one if it doesn't already exist. Is there an app that can rename folders and/or filenames in bulk so that the folder/filename are all capitalized. I'm going through a TON of eBooks that have jacked up filenames. I just want to quickly clean them up. Anyone have an idea and/or a solution?

You guys rock, so I know you'll deliver. LOL.

General Software Discussion / djvu files?
« Last post by siouxdax on March 06, 2009, 05:39 AM »
Anyone know of a good app that reads djvu files? I tried installing DJVuLibre, but all of the downloads were rogue files (in my opinion), so I don't want anything to do with that app. I don't need anything with lots of bells and whistles, just a simple app to read the djvu files.

As usual, your input is very much appreciated!

General Software Discussion / eBook Reader alternate to Acrobat?
« Last post by siouxdax on March 06, 2009, 05:25 AM »
Hello all:
Well here I am again, looking to you for some suggestions. I have Adobe Acrobat Professional, and I do a lot of reading PDF files. I'm wondering if there is another PDF reader out there that is more streamlined, slick and easy to use. I really have no problem with Acrobat, but it takes a while to load and can sometimes be sluggish. One thing I adore about Acrobat is the ability to correct the pagination (one of my pet-peeves), but other times it can be a real pain. For example, a lot of PDFs I open ignore my default view settings. I would love to have one of those Amazon Kindles, but there's no way in hell I could shell out the dough for that one. The more I think about it, though, maybe Acrobat is the best thing out there, but I would love to hear what you all have to say about this topic. I spend so much time reading PDFs that I now require an app that makes me smile every time I open it. LOL

As usual, any comments/suggestions, etc are very much appreciated.

Living Room / Wanting to donate...

Hello all:
I felt that I should express my gratitude for all of the help you folks have given me over the past few years. What prompted me to post this topic is that a few years ago I was able to donate to DC, but as of late I am unable to, given that I am disabled and my only source of income is disability payments. I wonder if there is another way I can contribute to keep DC alive and kicking. I feel that I should somehow be able to help considering I rely on you folks for giving advice and such. So if there is anything I can do, please let me know. I really want to help out in some way. But be forewarned: I know nothing about coding. LOL.

I tip my hat to you!

Skrommel's Software / Re: Toddler Trap

I am so overjoyed that someone created 'Toddler Trap'. I always had to either shut down my laptop or disconnect the keyboard and mouse on my desktop in order to give them a good cleaning. 'Toddler Trap' is fantastic and wonderfully simple. Cheers to whoever created it!

Hello all:
I'm the one who started this post; I never knew I could spark so much conversation! When it comes to the subject of encryption, I'm less than a newbie. I'm a proficient PC user, but all of this conversation is over my head. But to let you folks know, I wound up choosing Androsa FileProtector to encrypt my files. It's easy to use, which was most important to me considering I'm not knowledgable in this area. Thank you all so much for the input!

Well folks, it looks like Androsa FileProtector is the one I'm going with. A few too many advanced options, but I'm sure I will need them as I get more and more used to the app. Otherwise it's simple, lightweight and unobtrusive. Hurrah!

Thanks for all of the input!

Paul:
Thanks for the info. I've checked out the links, but I think they're too 'heavy' for my needs. I've read about TrueCrypt causing major problems after installation, so I don't want to chance it with that app. Is there any 'lightweight' apps that may do the trick. I don't necessarily need encryption, but merely a password-protected file/folder.

I hope I don't sound picky or whiny. LOL. I just think those apps are too much for me, if that makes any sense.

General Software Discussion / Password Protect File Or Folder?
« Last post by siouxdax on February 20, 2009, 08:08 PM »
Hello all:
I've been searching all over the site, but couldn't find what I'm looking for, which is an app that password protects a file and/or folder on my hard drive. I just need a simple app that won't open a file and/or folder without a password. Is there such an app?

Many thanks in advance!

Well thanks for the bookmarklets, but really jacked things up on the screen, didn't make it any easier to read. I will however try Skrommel Screen Dimmer and see if that does the trick.

Thanks, folks for all the input. I always turn to DonationCoder for issues such as this. You're all brilliant!!!

I'm open to any further suggestions on this topic.

General Software Discussion / Lower The Lights? Easier To Read Websites?

After reading several articles on Wikipedia I had to seriously rest my eyes; websites aren't meant to be stared at that long. So I'm wondering if there exists an application that "lowers the lights" or adjusts the contrast of your average website, making it easier to read lengthy websites. Is this pure fantasy, or is there something out there that does this?
