Living Room / Re: prevent my kids from downloading files from the Internet
« Last post by sajman99 on September 22, 2010, 01:12 PM »
I use a free version of Returnil (from a few years back) which doesn't have the expanded functionality of the newer versions.

With system virtualization software such as Returnil your kids can go absolutely nuts downloading and installing all the crap they can find, but when the computer is rebooted all their junk will be gone!

Once the parent illustrates this shocker to the child, he/she may understand the futility of their actions. In their minds, it might be--why bother, Dad's just gonna delete everything anyway. Or maybe they will download even more knowing you won't be mad. Hard to say. ;D

i hardly ever bother to udpate it and i can't remember the last time it wouldn't play a file.

Yep, I used to install specialized players just for .flv and .swf. For some reason, VLC was kinda inconsistent with certain file types. Since discovering KMPlayer some years ago, I no longer have need for those specialized players. Good grief, KMPlayer will even display graphics files!

It was disturbing to install K-Lite. It gave me a looong series of warnings about old codecs that it suggested to remove. I clicked Okay, so I am expecting at least one other program to now be useless!

Also, with KMPlayer you can avoid installing an external codec pack. Many folks use and recommend K-Lite, but I'd just as soon avoid it if at all possible. Long ago I had codec conflicts which created quite a mess, and I haven't forgotten that nightmare.

Check Event Viewer or Nirsoft's MyEventViewer for any errors or warnings.

Perhaps do a malware scan to make sure you didn't pick up some baddie. If nothing shows up in MBAM, SAS, etc., then at least you can eliminate that possibility.

General Software Discussion / Re: Strange Google Chrome Problem

Fair enough. The reason I asked is because I vaguely remember reading way back when I purchased IDM that "advanced browser integration" was somehow dangerous. To this day I've never enabled that feature; the program works just fine without it.

I was just now briefly searching and found this page with the following quote regarding IDM...
The "Advanced browser integration" provided by this program makes substantial changes to WinSock2 settings in the Windows registry, which can be highly dangerous. Use this feature with extreme care!

Anyway, glad you're back up and running stable. :)

Already 6.0.475.1? :o  You gotta be kidding me? Those Iron guys are making it hard to stay current.

IDM sucks!

Deozaan, very sorry to hear of your problems with IDM. I've frequently used IDM for 8 years, like it, and never had any significant issues. But I can certainly understand your frustration.

If you recall, could you please tell if you had enabled IDM's "advanced browser integration"? Just curious if this may have been a factor.

KMPlayer is maybe too big for my taste, a "media center", and has not been updated for a year.

Regardless I bet KMPlayer will play the file in question. Definitely do yourself a favor and check it out.

Last version of KMPlayer is 3.0.0.1438 (??) though you wouldn't know it from most sites which list 2.9.4.1438.

http://www.kmplayer....owthread.php?t=17274

Or maybe KMPlayer's successor Daum PotPlayer is now the way to go? :-\ Don't really know--I still have an older version of KMPlayer and it plays everything I've ever thrown at it.

btw I had forgotten about the Logitech mouse issue I was having because I could use Sandboxie to avoid erratic mouse movement.

I just checked Iron before loading Sandboxie and the mouse issue no longer exists. Finally! Looks like many earlier issues have been ironed out (no pun intended ;)).

Comodo has now went live with the "malware site blocking" feature of Comodo SecureDNS.

Announcement and site.

Perhaps it's all part of their attempt to rule the world. ;D  Just kidding--but it seems they have software and services for darn near everything.

Yes, portable Iron 6.0.475 is running here without issue.

Fanboy's Adblock List now has specialized lists for both SRWare Iron and Opera.

Iron subjectively feels marginally faster than Opera on my machine, but both browsers load very quickly. With both browsers the user can now have a clutter-free (ie. no ads 8)) browsing experience. :)

Here's an open source tool named Drive Backup which sounds worthwhile. Haven't had an opportunity to test yet.

Note the software description includes the following...
Added ability to compress backups (uses SharpZIP library)

+ 1 for DSynchronize

I'm keeping this portable tool as well. Even smaller than Bvckup (but without delta sync function). This app hasn't been updated in some time, but it works just fine as is.

Hard to believe such a small app can provide so many scheduling choices (ie. "timer sync" section) including realtime sync, but it works very well here. The preview mode is a nice feature as well--more sync tools should have this built in.

I recently had a look at bvckup and it's incredibly promising, the installer is just around 400kbB and it's already such a powerful product.  I like the delta update feature, plus all the bonuses added by the developer.  I strongly recommend that anyone reading this thread give it a try :) !

MerleOne, glad to see you like Bvckup. 8) For a small program, it is amazingly efficient in terms of its features. Of course, there are more powerful/robust programs with more capabilities. And then there are even smaller apps with less features (see Mirror for example).

Bvckup seems to hit the mark for me. Even though there's currently no documentation (AFAIK), I found the features easy to comprehend right away. The delta and realtime sync capabilities are very nice. Lots of potential here!

I hope to see an update soon. Seems the development has slowed a bit in recent months.

Curt, please let us know if you figured out this weird issue with multiple context menus.

I have also used Nirsoft's ShellExView and ShellMenuView to nuke unwanted entries, but I've never experienced what you've described here. Very strange. :o

Programs like FilerFrog will allow you to organize/consolidate context menus entries. But it seems you need more than this. :-\

HCenc 0.24 is no longer beta. Works great without any problems here. I'm sure I'll be moving to BD Rebuilder at some point, but this amazing encoder has been great for good 'ole standard DVD.

FastStone Capture is a nice all-around capture tool which includes a color picker. No longer free, but you can still track down the last freeware version.

I actually downloaded and tried Bvckup and I really liked it ! I find that for real time sync it works even better than other products like Super Flexible File Sync. It's fast, doesn't take much resource, etc.

The only problem is the VSS option to copy in use files. But the author told me that it would be implemented in the next beta. As soon as this will be available, I'll try it again.

It's a nice and well designed app. Not many features (it's not the goal here), but simple and efficient.

Yep, the real time sync seems to work well in Bvckup. The Volume Shadow Copying section is currently greyed out in v1.0.0.359, but it's good to know the author has plans for this feature.

btw I only just realized the second letter of Bvckup is actually the Greek letter delta--as in delta copying. Duh...I've been using this program for weeks now and never realized.  :-[ ;D

Interesting find. Please keep us posted and tell us about your impressions.

I can only report I've had no issues with the beta of Bvckup--it works as advertised. It offers easy to comprehend choices as to when, what, and how you backup your data. For example, you can "copy modified files in full" (ie. most reliable) or "copy only modified parts of the files" (ie. fastest).

btw I also like the free, small, and portable synchronization utility DSynchronize. Definitely enable "Preview mode" and "Save log" to see exactly how the app works before running a real job.

Is there a way to prevent Hitman Pro from scanning at startup, does anyone know? The option can be disabled, but it gets re-enabled when I start the app again. It doesn't seem to save the configuration anywhere. Since it's on Win7, and the downloadable file is not an installer, but the direct executable program, I put it outside of Program Files, but it won't obey the changes in configuration. Or could it be that it is a paid feature?

When I launch the latest HitmanPro.exe on my XP system, it copies itself  to C:\Program Files\Hitman Pro 3.5 and places a shortcut on the desktop. When run from that "proper" location in Program Files, the "Scan at startup" setting is remembered. Otherwise the startup setting gets re-enabled just as you indicated.

So strangely enough (on my XP system anyway) the downloaded file is an installer (at least in a limited sense). Weird and unexpected behavior IMO.

btw in the main interface you can select "Early Warning Scoring" (EWS) to perform a scan without internet connection.

+1 for Hitman Pro. It seems the developer is committed to developing a quality anti-malware which belongs on a short list with MBAM and SAS.

@Deozaan:

I also don't have PS3 so I can't give a personal recommendation on what works well in that regard.

However, I will say that recently I've read favorable comments on iWisoft Free Video Converter and Hamster Free Video Converter. Both of these video converters support a wide range of formats and devices.

btw the 24 hour time frame--from August 28, 2010 03:00 PST to August 29, 2010 03:00 PST--applies to the acquisition of the license.

The app can be installed/re-installed whenever desired provided you have a license.
