Living Room / Re: Looking for smartphone
« Last post by tomos on March 31, 2021, 05:01 PM »
The 4a 5G OTOH came down from €499 to 399. So I got the 4a 5G, delivered today (I just setting it up now).
Some random thoughts. I haven't even really tested this much, but can say the camera is miles ahead (that wasn't intentional @Miles :-)) of my last phone the Moto G6. Fwiw I always thought the G6 camera was good until I printed out a bunch of pictures lately (over sharpened, too much noise reduction, really did not look good).
The pixel camera is so much better -- a much better dynamic range, colours are fairly good, is great at night in town, good in low light. But I still feel kind of disappointed. They've had the same camera sensor and software for years. At 12 megapixel, it's fine -- you could print quite large if you wanted to. But as there's no real zoom, zooming in means cropping at best (or resizing at worst). They missed an opportunity to keep ahead of (or keep up with) the pack here -- even 16 or 18 MP would have given users much more freedom to crop.

Otherwise: screen is lovely, I find I'm using the phone instead of my tablet to watch videos/TV. Android 11 is nice, lots of dark. A few bugs, but that's life I guess. I'm happy with the purchase, don't know would I have been if I paid more (it's currently 50€ more than I paid for it).

General Software Discussion / Re: Cannot claim free space in C:\
« Last post by tomos on March 31, 2021, 04:18 AM »
@hulkbuster, I think the only way you can prove the problem, is to delete/move a large amount of files, or files that take up a large amount of space. Then, if that space doesn't show up....
The advice on this thread is very good, essential even, for an OS + files on a small partition (been there). You don't seem to have tried a lot of it.
For example the paging file could be gone crazy -- have you tried the suggestion there etc etc

EDIT// REQUEST #2:
what I need with the dates is the ability to replace newer files with older. This not an option with Syncovery or Dopus...

Isn't that just overwrite no matter what? That's an option.
I now have two sets of data -- neither is older or newer, they all jumbled up -- that's what I mean by a mess!
Will see how I get on with Antidupl.
181
Will check out Antidupl.
I hadn't thought of metadata. Did have a couple of different dams (or whatever they called) in the past. (Won't be able to attack it all again for a few day though.)
Thanks both for the input.
182
Just to give some background:
computer HDD and main backup drive both gave up the ghost a while back.
I'm cobbling files together from various incomplete backups.

I notice with photos that some are more recent versions with different file sizes. This possibly from e.g. rotating in Dopus (and saving rotation) but with many files I can see no reason for the different modified date / size. So if anything I want to overwrite the newer with the older version. (FWIW this does not seem to be an option either in Syncovery.)

But it's such a mess I just want to get the same folder structure on both sides, then I can look at the dates closer.

General Software Discussion / Sync: move files on one side but *dont* copy any?
« Last post by tomos on March 28, 2021, 04:49 AM »
A good Sync programme will offer to move files on one side, that exist on the other side -- but in a different location.
e.g. via Snycovery:

Screenshot - 2021-03-28 , 11_42_48_ver001.png

I want to be able to do this *without* copying files -- especially without *overwriting* files (e.g. due to more recent date or different size).
Syncovery insists that I copy in one direction.

Do you know of any software that will move but not copy ?

EDIT// I've discovered a way to do this in Syncovery, it's fairly manual i.e. not quick but does the job (see 'Leave alone' in context menu below) -- still interested in any easy alternatives..

Instead of asking for a destination folder, and creating a different directory structure.
I would prefer that any archive simply be replaced with an unarchived folder, or the contents of the archive.  In place, in present directory structure.
This is what the old program unziplify did (no longer available, and apparently stopped working due to some Windows system upgrade).
I still use unziplify in windows 8.1 64bits. And it still works fine for me. Apparently you can find it here now :
http://unziplify.en.uptodown.com/
Unziplify seems to work well in Windows 10 with one caveat --

SETTINGS:
  • delete archives after unzipping successfully [to same location i.e. no new folders created]
  • prompt to overwrite

With #2, unfortunately it gives no file information if the file already exists.
If I then select No (do not overwrite) for #2 there -- the zip file is still deleted.

I'm not an art collector, and even if I became a multi-millionaire (or billionaire) I will likely never pay even hundreds of dollars for a single painting. But some art collectors are willing to spend millions on a piece of art. Why would someone pay millions of dollars for the original when you can buy a reproduction that looks virtually the same for a relative few dollars?
Not so important, but fwiw, there is a huge difference between e.g. a painting, and a reproduction photo/print of that painting. (I would agree all the same that it's crazy the money that is paid for some art.)

Why not ?  :P
Actually tbh I'm not sure what you're asking -- maybe I was too brief ?
I was looking for this thread, couldn't remember the yaydl name and tried a forum search for 'youtube downloader'. This thread didn't show up, not in the first page of results anyways. It's now the sixth result.

I do have a fast thumb drive that I've been using.  Of course it sticks out of the side, daring me to break it off.
You could get one of those tiny usb sticks, I've only seen them go up to 64gb though.

Finally reading something by William Gibson.  Pattern Recognition
I remember really enjoying a couple of his books before I ever had a computer -- or had much understanding of the internet (the reality was pretty boring in comparison).

(Fwiw I only started using computers -- for work -- in 1999.)

Mort by Terry Pratchett. A nice (and not too big) hardback.

about 70 pages in -- a very easy and entertaining read so far. My first book by Pratchett.
enjoyed that to the end and went for the second in the series -- "Reaper Man". It's a bit all over the shop (almost halfway through). Definitely not as good as the first

Fwiw they do make nice covers in the last hardback series (and they relatively cheap too)

Android Apps / Re: DiscussionList for android
« Last post by tomos on February 16, 2021, 08:35 AM »
This is an app I have to admit I dont use very regularly, but I do keep coming back to it.

My main use scenario is for adding individual quotes that I find particularly (practically) helpful or ones that make me think, that stir something up inside. FWIW I'm not saying it's the best app for saving quotes -- and I generally type in the quote which is even slower -- but it means it sinks in more, it allows me to digest it another bit. Then I use the slide view and scroll through the notes.

So, thanks for the app

the Kevin Kelly list is really good (only took me a year to really look at it :p)

Tools -> Import -> Browse Suggested..

Then you'll see a list of available imports.. The new [Kevin Kelly] one is at the bottom.
195
What is it you want / expect to happen (or is it that you want to scroll, and inadvertently have the Ctrl key pressed from last use of same ?)

If there is desired behaviour (as opposed to no behaviour :p) could this be implemented via AHK? [that directed at the AHK specialists...]

the highlighted text at the bottom -- that's the sort.
Had a quick look in the help but didnt see anything related -- I know this has been discussed in this board before so a search of same might get you the answer.

EDIT//
I Think drgt is asking to sort the GROUPS not the clips within groups.

Over the past year or so I've gotten into videos by the LockPickingLawyer.
Have watched a good few of his videos. Very entertaining -- he's got a great voice too. I can imagine really enjoying picking locks :D but cant imagine making the effort to learn. Nice to hear about your start

I was considering the Pixel 4a for a long time, mainly because of the good camera (+ related software), but instead of getting cheaper it got more expensive: the €320 intro offer went up to 350 eventually... The 4a 5G OTOH came down from €499 to 399. So I got the 4a 5G, delivered today (I just setting it up now).
Extra over the 4a is:
a wide angle camera / a better processor / larger battery / larger screen / 5G, possibly other bits and bobs.
For €50 more, it seems fair enough.

I would have liked the recycled aluminium back and the gorilla 6 screen, and the waterproofing of the Pixel 5 -- but to have to pay €230 for those features wasn't that attractive.

General Software Discussion / Re: Windows Explorer "File manager" Alternative
« Last post by tomos on February 05, 2021, 06:14 AM »
The most important thing immediately is that I can preserve the creation date when copying between drives
I think that with the dates should not be a problem with any half-decent file manager.
With XYplorer, you can trial the portable version (scroll down this page a bit for the link). XYplorer is cheaper than Dopus, and also offers a lifetime license. The regular license includes updates for one year (is not a subscription though).

I dont know can you trial the portable version of Dopus. I preferred Dopus myself for reasons not really relevant here (image handling). It is expensive, but, as 4wd says major (paid) updates dont come around so often.

The link below is not a direct comparision (e.g. some pros or cons of one file manager are not listed on the other, even though they exist there too) but it will give you an idea of each individual manager:
