General Software Discussion / Re: SQLNotes...what is it exactly?

You can
-use the journal,
-find one and checkout the filled field and compare that with your grid,
- perhaps you've added a dateFilter or an AlphaFilter to your grid...

The intention here was not for a time or attendance tracking tool, rather for a simple FYI type arrangement so that we have some visibility of each others movements.

Seems to me something as simple shared Google Calendars (one per worker) should do then, or for that matter, a simple text, word or excel file, put on the LAN.

As for using SQLNotes (now portable so compatible with Corporate IT rules), it will definitely do much more... But what is your definition of an overkill? An app that does much more, if nevertheless fast loading, simply gives you more room for expanding

I can certainly provide a simple template for such a setup, if you want...

Thanks, I'd seen SyncToy before, although I've never tried it.  I've been using SyncBack SE, as I needed the added features, but what I really was thinking of, is for a program that simply scans for identical folder names on two or more drives, and then puts the contents all in one of those drives.

SyncToy does this quite well IMO. This is called Contribute. Setup is easy and you do not need to check each folder individually. Version 2.0 has a number of improvements, to help this.

Have you tried free SyncToy (from MS, current is 2.0)? It has decent options for syncing drives (sync, contribute, echo).

This seems like a trivial task to do with SQLNotes (I'm the designer). You would have a centrally located database (absolutely no setup required), and each user could update their info. Being a database, you could keep a history (Lets see, who was where on June 15th?)

Information presentation could be within the SQLNotes UI or through ODBC enabled apps like Excel and Access.

Over and above the Agenda / presence tracking, SQLNotes allows more general information management, group sharing and storage (Excel-like numeric data, EverNote-like textual and web content) along with sophiticated reporting (pivot tables and charts). Its outlining capabilities are great for brainstorming (Mindmaps are coming soon). It can be used for project managements with the built-in Gantt charts.

It is automatically multi-user with individual cell locking (not record-level locking), hence, users can modify different aspects of the same item at the same time. All changes are time-stamped and user-stamped. Newest version is portable on XP/Vista, hence does not require installation. Free while in beta (stable). $50 per seat afterwards. www.sqlnotes.net

[edit] As for online wikis, I use http://www.wikispaces.com/ alot and it just works well, always. Wetpaint seems nice too, has a better rich text editor but is a bit more complex to use.[/edit]

General Software Discussion / SQLNotes: The next generation information organizer
« Last post by PPLandry on September 12, 2008, 04:05 PM »
Version 0.9.23.7 is now available in the SQLNotes download area: http://www.sqlnotes....abid/61/Default.aspx.

Major changes are:

    * Show hyperlinks of lineage items on the status bar
    * Show siblings in the properties pane
    * Filter as you type
    * Portable!  8) :-*

The biggest news is that it can now run without installation and does not require admin rights. It works on XP and Vista systems (does not work on Win 2000). Users can report if it works on Mac (Parallels) and Linux (Wine). So SQLNotes is can now be used in workplace environments, even very closed-down ones (security-wise).

General Software Discussion / Re: How do you manage your email?
« Last post by PPLandry on September 11, 2008, 03:23 PM »
This is my point of view too. I believe that if you've got sufficient redundancy (good backup system), these things (loose all emails/files etc.) should absolutely not happen.
One reason for not trusting electronic means of storage is for long term stuff, as the medium may no longer be supported. I've got some 5" disks still, but nothing to read it (one of them is my Masters thesis ). I've got audio and video tapes too. It won't be long before they'll be unusable.

In practice, I just don't care, since if I haven't used the info in 10-15 years, I don't need it anymore

Technology evolves rapidly...

That said, I'll print Travel related information (plane tickets, etc.), other than that, never. I'd print out more if I didn't have a portable.

General Software Discussion / Re: Time to reinstall Windows? Or get a new desktop?
« Last post by PPLandry on September 10, 2008, 08:21 PM »
Nothing beats a fully fresh windows install, though :)

I thought so too... but recently had to switch HD and chose to re-install fom scratch and move it up to SP3. I even googled around on the best order to install programs (IE, Office, SP2, SP3, etc). My portable was 5 years old and working just fine.

My installation is just 2 weeks old now and there are a lot of things which are just not working as before. I suspect that SP3 is to blame for these, but they are so irritating that I'm considering rebuilding again (this time stopping at SP2).

Examples are:
- some high priority process seems to run every 3 sec. or so, preventing mouse move and making sound files choppy
- Only 1 process can send POP requests
- wheel scrolling sometimes has 1 sec delay
- Seems to be more HD activity
- MSAccess sometimes jams for 5 seconds while doing nothing special, unresponsive (I've dev. app with MSAccess for 15 years, so I know it well and have never seen this before)
- I installed Live Mesh and later on removed it and now I have a 2nd monitor named: "Live Mesh Remote Desktop Curtain Driver"  :( >:( and apparently no way of removing it.

And the list goes on...

@ armando

What if SQLNotes could automatically decompile CHM files and create an ouline of items with the CHM content... You'd get viewing, annotation, bookmarking and search. Would that be a good ( or perfect ) solution for you?

Eventually, the reversed process could be performed (i.e. compiling)

Dynamic link tracking (basically not linking to the actual file, but to an automatically generated shortcut) is not yet implemented, but easy to do. The first one to ask gets it  ;)
-PPLandry link=topic=14664.msg127276#msg127276

I certainly would ask if I'm committed. For now, however, I'm steering clear of SQLNotes. Not because it's bad. It's very good, according to my own experience a few betas back. It's so good that I'm afraid I'll be hooked if I keep using it.

And it's not because I'm too frugal to pay. It's just at this moment in time as I'm getting ready to set myself free from Windows (at least I hope so), I really don't want something that would keep me leashed to the system.

By any chance there will be a linux version in the future?
- As in a native Linux: No
- As a Windows app running on Linux (VMWare or other): We're working on it.

Developer's Corner / Re: Best way to sync programming projects?

Have you tried SyncToy from MS? It is great to sync (with many options: sync one way, both ways, contribute, etc) between multiple computers. You can save sync configuration and selectively execute one or all. It is fast and free...

http://www.microsoft...7&displaylang=en

I second the SyncToy suggestion. Works great and is very easy. And totally free ..

And version 2.0, just released is one the first application to use the powerful Microsoft Sync Framework:

I'm using SQLNotes that way but it does a lot of other things & it's in beta at the moment but I believe it wont "Be free or [relatively] cheap" but will be portable.
Personal licenses is set to $49.99 for the full featured version, IMO quite affordable. A free, feature limited version may come after V1.0 release.

OTOH, SQLNotes--mentioned by tomos--above, promises dynamic link tracking (not sure if it's implemented yet).

I missed some good posts here - must have not clicked through one of the notification emails so I stopped getting them.

I then to click on "Show new replies to your posts" at the top of the page. Less disturbing than incoming email.

The Drupal page looks nice. Not sure about the fonts for "SQLNotes: The Next Generation Information Organizer" (size etc.) though... but, yes, I know it's just a test page.

I'm curious :  how will Drupal have an effect on availability and performance?

The problem with the current is reliance on SQLServer as the database. Drupal use mySQL. SQLServer is expensive and hosting company tend to overload it, to save money

It seems the SQLServer was down from 12h00 to 7h30 EST

Yes I'm looking into changing web site. Same hosting service but using Drupal and an mySQL database which hopefully will be performing better

General Software Discussion / Re: How to clone large HDDs?
« Last post by PPLandry on August 21, 2008, 09:46 PM »
Thanks for your help, in the end, the old HD was too unstable that trying to copy it was not possible.

I installed the newer 80GB IDE into the portable, and ran the recovery disk (5 years ago, manufacturers were kind enough to give us CD's).

I'm back on my feet, with a larger HD and a "very" clean PC. It will take some time to install everything and tweak it, as usual with a new PC, but that is life... I'll probably not invest too much time, as this got me thinking that it is probably time for a new PC anyway. I'll get it running, catch up on some work and start shopping.

At least, I had a recent backup and the old drive is now in the housing, so I can still read from it.

Hmm... googled the freezer trick myself and this was the first 'hit':

Freezing a hard drive can be used in data recovery, but will only fix the hard drive for a short period of time. If the drive is spinning (you will hear it turning) this is not the method to use, this method is best suited for data recovery cases where the drive is not spinning. If the drive is spinning it not physically damaged so it is a problem that should be approached through other methods.

Thanks for the link"

My hard disk is still functional, so I'll wait before freezing it...

General Software Discussion / How to clone a HD before it dies...
« Last post by PPLandry on August 20, 2008, 07:26 PM »
My Acer laptop HD (5 years old, IDE 40GB) is showing signs of wear. It seems to have problems reading some areas of the disk and gives me a "blue" screen followed with a major crash, at times. I have an 80GB IDE portable drive which I could swap (2 years old).

I'm considering using XXClone. Is this still a good choice? It won't strickly speaking make an image, but simply copy all files and make it bootable, optionally copy the Disk ID. Will that guarantee that the end result will work when I install that 80GB HD into my portable? Fully configured for all my 100's of applications?

Should I go with a true image software?

The fact that some areas are not readable, will that cause problems with XXClone?

Thanks for helping a "software" guy with this hardware question.

General Software Discussion / Re: Impressive list of outliners/note-taking apps
« Last post by PPLandry on August 17, 2008, 07:52 PM »
The list was getting corrupted due to bad sorting...

So to make this sharing experience:

1- It would be best if users would register, that way, we’d see who modified what, and could be advised if another roll-back is required
2- When sorting, make sure you select all columns and check “Has header row”, this will leave the first row at the top.

I think that for the benefit of all (and as I have little time to spend on this), I’ll restrict the usage somewhat:

- The list is now read-only by default
- To make changes, click the UnLock button at the bottom and enter the password: outliners

Hopefully, this will avoid corruption. Again, it would help if users registered…

If this password approach does not help, we can use community access or invitation-based e-mail access methods.

Happy outlining…

Glad to see that it is now working for you
