General Software Discussion / Re: Collectorz.com... again!
« Last post by J-Mac on January 03, 2009, 12:25 PM »
I don't care if they know, but do they have to validate my license each time I search?

I think that a lot more developers do this than most people realize.

I don’t really care.

I’m now on Vista Ultimate 64-bit and wanted to confrim that PS Tray Factor 2.63 (which is a beta) does not work under it (though it worked brilliantly under Vista 32-bit). I'm soldiering on using Windows "Hide Unused Icons' feature, which is "OK", but I do miss PS Tray Factory... Hope the developer gets a 64-bit (or 64-bit compatible) version out soon.

Where are you seeing the beta? When I go to the web site I see that the latest item the developer has posted in the "News" section is May 7, 2007!!

I don’t see anything there about a beta version.

Thanks!

Living Room / Re: Recommendations for small, 4-port USB hub?
« Last post by J-Mac on January 03, 2009, 01:38 AM »
Ah, I looked at the site but did not see any indication that it could be externally powered.

I see so many complaints from people who purchased the most compact hub they could find (which is, of course, understandable) and then can't understand why their printer or an external drive won't run off it.   ;) I have a handful of very nice little, tiny non-powered hubs that are fine for, say, a notebook mouse, and several other lightly powered peripherals.

Thanks!

I recommend APACER PH150:
http://emea.apacer.c...ages/product/454.jpg

I have two of them and works with now problem with low price. It's 4-port device.
Innovative rotating USB port design, Plug-and-play, High-speed data transfer USB2, Over-current detection and protection
more info here:
http://emea.apacer.c...n/products/PH150.htm

Looks nice but I don’t believe that is externally powered, which means that you could only run small, non-power-intensive devices on it.

I've added an item to the todo list that will let users of the Linkman IE Toolbar disable the context menu items.

Thank you! That is very much appreciated.

The only thing I can think to add to these is the ability to control how many context menu items are added to Internet Explorer. I think it is currently four!

If you think that they are all needed, then add a submenu to the IE context menu and have them fly out from there.

Thanks!

Jim

I think most users would be against a submenu, because it would slow down the operations.

-Outertech Support (December 31, 2008, 08:33 AM)

Well then can you provide a way for we users who don’t fear that it "...would slow down the operations"  to remove at least three of the context menu items? Please?!? Currently if I leave all context menu items from all apps as is, my context menu is off the page top and bottom. Too many developers seem to think that their applications are the most important thing on the users' computers and add way too many context menu items!  (And please understand: I do not mean that Linkman is not important - it is very important to me! But there are other ways to access these commands. In IE I use the Linkman Toolbar!)

As an example, I uninstalled all my HP and Canon printer software because of this - between the two of them there were 13 additional items on the right-click menu. IMO, that's crazy.

Let's face it - four is too many for most users, especially when the Linkman toolbar is available and as handy as it is. If these were relative items, like Scrapbook and others who have the context menu items only appear when they are needed, that would be different. But these "four horsemen of the Linkman" are always present.  :P  BTW, in Firefox I use an old extension that I modified to work with FF3 called Menu Editor that lets me configure my context menu however I choose. I removed all but the "Search in Linkman" items, but only because all the other items are already in the status bar icon - which I use quite a bit.

Anyway, that's my take on it.  :)

Thanks!

I used to spend time at CastleCops. It got tough to stay there, though. For one thing, your starting page was "Your Favorites" and it became tough to find a way to get to the main forum index! Had to go somewhere else and then work your way back up. Next, CastleCops had to be one of the slowest servers on the Internet - and I'm not talking about when under DDOS attack - all the time for the last year or two.

The independent forums were great but a few of the private developer forums were pretty bad - I won't say which.

Thanks for the great news thread, as always, Ehtyar!

Feature requests:
--Add all 4 buttons to Firefox.  (Search in Linkman, Show Linkman, add to linkman, add to linkman and edit)

--Allow users to control which buttons appear or not.

--Import launch count from Powermarks.

--Allow secondary column sorting.  For example, if I want to sort by launch count, but the launch count is equal, then the secondary sort can be set to rating or description, etc.

--Allow batch assigning ratings.  If I select a bunch of bookmarks and want them all rated "2" then I should be able to do it.  Now, if I select them all and go to assign a rating, it only does one of them.

The only thing I can think to add to these is the ability to control how many context menu items are added to Internet Explorer. I think it is currently four!

If you think that they are all needed, then add a submenu to the IE context menu and have them fly out from there.

Found Deals and Discounts / The Journal - 51% Discount at Bits on 1/5/2009
« Last post by J-Mac on December 29, 2008, 08:00 PM »
If any of you keep a journal, diary, or scrapbook check out The Journal at Bits duJour on January 5, 2009. I have been using this application for over a year (and I paid full price...  :(  ) and it is a great program.

I keep a couple daily journals: one is just a daily record, a diary of sorts. The other is for recording medical information for my disability. But I also created several "notebooks" in The Journal where I keep my blog entries and other specific information, as well as general writing - short stories, etc.

It claims to have appointments, address book, and other PIM-type features but they are extremely rudimentary; do not confuse The Journal for a PIM application. It is a place to collect all of your writings and it does that better than anything else I have tried. You can also configure The Journal to submit your blog entries directly to your blogs, and it has links to most of the commonly used blogging sites.

I highly recommend this program. Check it out on January 5, 2009.

General Software Discussion / Re: Firefox 3.1 [BETA 2]
« Last post by J-Mac on December 29, 2008, 02:52 AM »
Well, when Fx 2 was released I upgraded immediately and was without most of my extensions for a few months. Worse, Roboform was not able to work on Fx 2 for a while.

When Fx 3 was released I waited three months and had problems with only three extensions, and I was able to get two working with the Nightly Tester Tool. Tab Mix Plus just got their Fx 3 extension out about a month and a half ago. They did have a "developers' build" available but not publicized at all, and that one was a true-blue beta - lotsa Fx crashes while they worked out the kinks.

As I said, I prefer to wait until I know I can use all or most of my extensions before upgrading - can't see why I would want or need to before that. (And I am not asking or telling anyone else to "prefer" my way!)

- wow, this sounds really cool, J-Mac - I sure will look into such a fancy model, also!

Curt, here's an article about how to do this. Take a look and see if it helps you at all.   :)

Jim

Curt,

First, if this is for emails containing licenses/registration codes, Gmail might not be the most private place for them. However if you do not fear any privacy issues surrounding Google, why not create yourself a Google Group? Assign yourself as administrator of the group, make it private - membership only upon approval of the administrator (of course you don’t approve anyone!), and then forward all the email you want saved to that group. Can't get easier access than that, and it is at least as private as a Gmail account. (Which you will need anyway to start a group). Plus youn have the benefit of the Google search engine to search the group.

From that point on you can also have any email account auto-forward to the address of the group and it will be saved there for as long as you have that group - or until Google goes out of business, whichever comes first!

Jim

BTW, I have a group like that and all messages to my Gmail account are forwarded there, as a redundant backup.  8)

If they are currently stored on your computer in Thunderbird, Eric Fookes Aid4Mail is the most accurate way to transfer the messages to almost any other client and at the same time maintain your folder/mailbox structure. Of course if your goal is just to get them all onto Google's servers, well, I think forwarding as Attachments is the cleanest way. Though that could take a loooong time.

I probably won't use 3.1 for about three or four months after its release, if not later. Same with all new major/semi-major versions. They break most of the extensions, and frankly, IMO, Firefox isn't worth the time or effort if most of the extensions I use don’t work. Easier to jump back to Opera till I can add the extensions again. And yes, I do use the Nightly Tester Tools extension to force compatibility of extensions, but that usually works only for minor "point" updates. E.g., Tab Mix Plus would make the discussion about the Tab button moot.

As I always say, the best thing about Firefox is the extensions, and the worst thing about Firefox is the extensions!

Thanks!

General Software Discussion / Re: Another 'Lifetime' license bites the dust
« Last post by J-Mac on December 27, 2008, 02:46 PM »
Probably depends greatly on the exact wording of the license

I wrote an article about guarantees a few years back. In it, I offered the following as the perfect wording for an Unconditional Money-Back Guarantee:

We offer all our customers an Unconditional Money-Back Guarantee.

If for, any reason, you are not happy with a product or service you purchased from us:

UNDER NO CONDITIONS will you be given your money back. WE GUARANTEE IT.

Doesn't get more unconditional than that. ;D

I ran it past an attorney of my acquaintance. His comment: "I like it!"

I like it!   ;D

General Software Discussion / Re: What is the currently best Desktop Search software?
« Last post by J-Mac on December 27, 2008, 02:44 PM »
I think stopKa is working without any included spyware or worm. A big problem is that the program needs a tricky user to get "normal" results. I also concentrate on the theme Disc-Cataloging and Searching here, but the way he´s promoting it here is by far more intense (pushing) then I do with my own Disc-Cataloger project.

I really wasn’t trying to be accusatory or offensive to him. It's just that whenever my machine starts to act in a way similar to what it sounded like some here were experiencing, that's the first thing I do after rebooting. I download and run a LOT of software applications and when anyone does that - especially with unproven software - there's a higher degree of risk than so-called "normal" users (Meaning people like my father-in-law who checks email, looks at photos sent to him, and not much else.   :)  )

A safety measure, if you will.

@J-Mac:
I do regularly AV-scans with different products and have a scanner running in the background the whole time with hourly updates. I think the most also will do so. I run a lot of different programs a day and had no instable system or anything like that in the last two years - only at the moment with stopKa. Why do you guess this could be the reason for our problems with this specific program?

Oh, no special reason, no inside knowledge. Just that the developer dropped in suddenly and made over a dozen posts pushing this hard - and kind of "pushy" about it, and then it seemed that most everyone here who installed it had some significant issues with their systems. Not necessarily an indicator of an infection but it is certainly a possibility.  ;)

I'm wondering if a good lawyer could not make money on these roaming definitions of the word lifetime. If a dev or company is unwilling to specify exactly what the term means for the consumer, then I think dropped 'lifetime licensed users' users have a class action suit.

In other words, either honor it or don't offer it. I'll still buy your software; I just won't be pissed off later.

Probably depends greatly on the exact wording of the license, along with the country of incorporation, or at least where the company is located.

I doubt it is worth it, though.   :(

Methinks you may all be wise to run a deep AV/AS scan.

Not saying you have a specific problem, but you never know till you really look. Certainly can't hurt.

I was wondering if there is a possibility that Linkman searches my entire drives and collects all existing IE, firefox bookmarks and eliminates duplicates.

I am carrying quite a lot in too many backup directories and this would help.

thanks

If you mean does it scan and find them automatically, no - I don’t believe that is possible in Linkman. Importing is easy enough but you have to point Linkman at your favorites/bookmarks. It can import, AFAIK, from Firefox, Internet Explorer, Opera, Chrome, and Excel.

By the way, I replaced both Belkins (after getting warranty replacements from Belkin) with two of these Kensington 7-port hubs. These have been great, though I now see that the same kind of "delayed reaction" issues seem to be arising.   :o

THe Belkin got fantastic reviews for about six months, then the heat problems started "attacking". THe Kensington hubs also had great reviews but I just noticed when getting the link for this post that the reviews are all of a sudden reporting problems after about six or seven months of use. I have used two of these for about a year now - actually a bit more than a year - without a problem. But it looks like I need to keep a close eye on them now.

Damn, is this a problem that strikes all multi-port, powered USB hubs? Is it possible that having that many ports on a hub just can't be done without eventually failing?

Thanks!

From my experience, any of the major brands seem to work equally well. I tend to buy Belkin, more out of habit than for any solid technical reasons. I'd recommend getting one with an AC adaptor, or purchasing one to go along with it. I quickly discovered you'll need it more often than not.

I use this puppy:

http://www.newegg.co...Item=N82E16817394008
 (see attachment in previous post)
I bought it primarily for the two vertical plugs, since I do a lot of things with my collection of flash memory keys.

The only complaint I have with it is that it is very light. If you have some quality cables plugged in and hanging off the back of your desk, it tends to be dragged around. A hunk of masking tape solved the problem.

Nowadays, I have a 4-port PCI card and 4 more USB connectors on my mobo, so anything that tends to stay plugged in gets one of those ports. I also keep a multi-plug USB cable permanently attached to one of the ports on the mobo for anything that doesn't like to be on a hub.

If I were buying a new hub today, I'd probably go with this:

http://www.newegg.co...Item=N82E16817394030

What I'd really like would be for someone to do this idea up as a 4-port USB + 2-port Firewire version; and include a multiple memory card reader socket. That would be too cool.

Be careful with these.

I had two of them and both failed, one taking out the USB port in which it was connected. If you check the Amazon.com ratings for it you'll see that many have had a heat problem with them. The two top ports are particularly vulnerable to the heat issue. For several months I had problems with the USB ports on my desktop PC. Since that PC has given me fits in a lot of areas I thought it was just another manifestation of my crappily built Mach V. Then I discovered just how hot these hubs could get - enough to literally burn my hand while picking it up!

Apparently the problems don’t affect all systems, but they do affect enough that Belkin established a hotline for them and eventually released a "revised" version that supposedly fixed the heat issue. But I've seen reports of the same problems with the newer ones also.

cyberdiva:  That is a separate issue altogether. URL's are directly due to either Outertech or your own Settings in Linkman. The Help (.chm extension) file is configured to run in an Internet Explorer window - IOW, the actual window in which you are reading the Help file IS an Internet Explorer pane, and all links within that file will always open in IE. You could copy the link and then put it into the URL bar in Firefox if you really, really need it to open in Firefox.
