« Last post by Armando on January 02, 2008, 06:45 PM »
Thanks Nosh and Nighted.

I don't know, I never found that winamp was that bloated. I think it depends on the skin you use but it never takes more than 20MB of RAM on my system (but usually between 7MB and 20MB, much less if it's minimized), and CPU is often between 0 and 1%. Multitasking is not a problem. My laptop is an Inspiron 6400 with dual core (first generation) CPU, 1.8mgz.

I just installed foobar. It IS lighter. But not dramatically. I'll play a bit with it later and see.

I've installed winamp 5.5 after reading all the good comments.
I tried foobar a long while ago... How does it now compare to winamp, or even to KMPlayer for example?

Thanks for your message Pierre ! So you're on "holiday"s, hmmm?

If you've got 100's of fields, I'm not sure if it would be useful. Perhaps it would be better to select items and copy all item info (in XML format). Can you explain a bit more what you'd want?

You basically answered my question in a previous paragraph (and, you're right of course : it wouldn't be that useful if all fields were merged)!

For the practice description, I made a new field instead of using the "Item" field so that I can use dropdown lists to choose between a handful of prenamed descriptions.  I can post a screenshot of it later (it's at home).

Nice. I didn't even know you could do that. :-[

P.S. : Pierre : I just saw your post...

For each application, one must examine the relative merits (advantages/disadvantages) of each outline structures. Yes SQLNotes can do outlines/calculations, but it can also do flatter structures. Each have relative merits. Flatter structures are sometimes superior to indented ones. Similarly, separate values can be saved in separate fields vs single field but multiple items, vs single text field. Ease of data entry, data analysis (immediate and eventual), information sharing are key considerations here.

Good advice, Pierre.

"Ease of data entry, data analysis (immediate and eventual), information sharing"  :  These parameters are exactly the one I use when I have to structure data.

I must say that the parameter I think of most is "data analysis". It's a drag when you've entered all your data in a structure that's opaque, not differentiated enough and only later realize that you should of separate some info.

Is there a way to merge fields in SQLNotes? If yes, then creating a multitude of fields is not a problem if you can decide to merge them later on, or even just create a "merged view/print of all fields/columns".
--> Would that be possible (to create a "merged view/print of all fields/columns") ?

Similarly : even if a highly hierarchical structure is adopted, it's not really a problem if a flat view was also possible, momentaneously eliminating all hierarchies, with the possibility to sort through different parameters : date, name, etc.
--> Is that possible at the moment?

Some various comments :

--> One potentially useful feature would be to save certain tool bar arrangements and apply these "arrangements" to all grids.

Also, 2 things have been happening with v.0.9.21

-- When I open certain grids : "Error opening grid. Check grid source criteria."
What does that ?

-- Sometimes, under certain varying circumstances (like selecting some empty space-columns in an empty grid, or -- but that was a while ago -- I typed alt+2 by mistake within the find window) I'll get a super crash:

Run-time error '-2147467261 (80004003)': Method '~' of object '~' failed.

And then I loose the stuff I've been working on  :( .

The data is not completely gone of course but I have to repopulate the grid manually.

--> Is there a way to save the grids content and "format" automatically or even manually with a shortcut key ?

(BTW, what's the new link for the daily builds ?  :) )

thanks for your list nontroppo!

[slightly off-topic] BTW, are there any advantages to use the "bookmarks system" instead of favorites (like in IE, Maxthon, etc.; I earlier mentioned the fact that I didn't like bookmarks, and that I'm currently using the PlainOldFavorites add-on for firefox -- which allows to use favorites in Firefox instead [/slightly off-topic]

« Last post by Armando on December 31, 2007, 11:34 AM »
I did try registry mechanic, but a long time ago. I think it was good... or was it ? But how shall I really be able to tell ?
Actually, like some here, I stopped using registry cleaners (and in facts most cleaners, registry or not!) after experiencing problems related to these, sometimes weeks or even months after cleaning my machine.

There were a couple of times where some software problems were actually instantly solved by cleaning the registry with TuneUp Utilities registry cleaner  (the only one that actually never did anything wrong to my machine -- but I've stopped using it anyway... +  it's outdated...) (can't remember exactly what the problem was... it was at least 2-3 years ago).

Armando: did you try tweaking either/both:

opera:config#UserPrefs|SmoothScrolling
opera:config#UserPrefs|TurboMode

Thanks nontroppo (and a happy new year to come !!!  ).
I tried these before and they don't make the scrolling good enough.
That + what tomos and f0dder described = me won't using Opera.
Which is too bad because I really love opera for so many other things -- and some very important too me, like speed, lightness, etc.

I finally updated my Comodo v2 to v3, and I'm happy I did. Much more configurable, and takes even less resources than it did (v3 : 3-8mb on my laptop). With version 2 I had problem with the DLL injection monitoring, but that's fixed now. The system process also went berserk from time to time. That's fixed too.
The interface looks nice (although I'd like to have a Windows Classic theme instead). My system is stable.
All in all, it seems like a VERY good deal!

So boils down to I is a frustrated Opera lover :-* :(

Same case here.

But if Firefox could have that...
fast as hell, and no memory bloat.

General Software Discussion / Re: A Firefox Lover's Guide to Opera
« Last post by Armando on December 30, 2007, 01:27 PM »
I've been using Opera a bit on and off over the years, but it's always been slightly unstable for me

Opera has been absolutely stable when I tried it (for 2-3 weeks), 1-2 months ago.

But, yes, the absence of a plug in system is a drag.

Never been a friend of "smooth scrolling", even in IE. Too slow, and scrolling in the opposite direction doesn't "cancel" scrolling, so you have to wait until the smooth scroll is done until you can scroll back - annoying. And it's absolutely crapalicious on terminal servers :)

Yup, smooth scrolling is generally not my friend either, but in Maxthon, don't ask me why, scrolling in the opposite direction is absolutely instantaneous ([edit : even with "smooth scrolling" on]). And, well, it goes as fast as you want it to...

General Software Discussion / Re: A Firefox Lover's Guide to Opera

Nice article.

I like opera, but my touch pad doesn't seem to like it. The scrolling is not smooth enough and it's annoying (and I've tried everything) ;  I scroll so much in a day that I can't live with that kind of clunky scrolling [EDIT : actually : it's not THAT bad if I change certain settings  :)... But :]. It's also lacking the flexibility one finds in Firefox.

So... I've tried using Opera for a few weeks (used it with nontroppo's "breeze_simplified_micro" skin  ), but had to go back to... Maxthon (where scrolling is just pure ecstasy : precise, smooth, etc. -- well, for me, with this touch pad) ...

And now I'm retrying Firefox... with the "PlainOldFavorites" add-on : I could never get used to Bookmarks (although I prefer the term "bookmark"). Favorites are easier to search and manage, I find ; they're just tiny files-shortcut. I've actually switched from Maxthon to Firefox three days ago (main reason : plug ins, add ons, security -- and scrolling is not too bad if you remove the "smooth scrolling" option, and get rid of all the smooth scrolling add-ons --> my touch pad doesn't like them). I like Firefox, but I'm still having a slight problem with its horrendous RAM usage.

General Software Discussion / Re: teracopy: copy your files faster
« Last post by Armando on December 29, 2007, 10:56 PM »
Teracopy is nice.

I just want to "warn" those who happen to copy files from X1 (and maybe from other desktop search interface too, I don't know) that teracopy and other file managers using special "copying/moving etc. system" seems to  modify filenames case according to X1's own stupid filename modifications.

i.e. : X1 usually display all files in lower case (or will arbitrarily modify the case to something different), even if they're not really in lower case ; and if you copy them from X1 to a folder using teracopy, the filenames will be transformed according to X1's own screwed up displaying. I've read that this happens with some file managers like DO and the like.
