Heh, heh - the giveaway starts tomorrow (Nov 27) and ends on Dec 3. So try in about 3 and a half hours, when it'll be midnight on the eastern seaboard of the US!

BTW the 30% discount on the lifetime licence is already in effect

AFAIK, they limit you to using it on only one computer - can't install it on a desktop and mobile computer. And I do know that if you move to a different computer, or reinstall your OS, you must get a new registration code.

I've never had any trouble reinstalling PS Tray Factory using an existing registartion code. Actually... your post, and writing this one, has lead me to look at my PS Tray Factory licences - I've purchased two, 11 months apart, and both have the exact same licence key, AFAICT. Odd (and worrying). I have looked at the original e-mails and compared them side by side - they both have different order numbers.

I don't see why the standard recovery CD shouldn't work as a fall back boot up for backup. I have never used the CD beyond a quick and dirty backup of a failing partition - does it support incremental and differential backups in the same way as the installed version?

AFAICR, it does.

I understand the distinction that developers make, and why... Just don't like it when I get caught in the technicalities  ;D

I'm really obsessing over a non-issue as Vista 32-bit is just fine for everyday use and is nice and quick on the hardware that it shares with the Server version (minus the HD, of course).

I'll just keep playing for now, I suppose.

Hi aoyase, that looks like a support issue to me! I'd write to the developer and explain what happened.

Alas, I already have the corporate version of Acronis True Image and the Universal Restore add-on, and agree that it's a fine application. Director Suite is the home user version. At any rate, once I determined that DD wouldn't run under Server and neither it nor TrueImage would install, I didn't even try ATI's bootable CD. .However, I'll give it a go - my main concern is backing up my installation anyway - the drive partitioning isn't so urgent as my intention had been to back up my 32-bit installation to an external drive and then write the 64-bit image to that partition. That's not clear... I have two drives containing these installs, both of which get swapped into and out of my latest Notebook. The 5400rpm 250GB drive that I got with the notebook has Vista Home Premium 32-bit on it while an older 100GB 7200 rpm SATA drive that I have kicking around has the 64-bit Server installation. If all went well (and it largely has), I was planning to simply make images of both drives and then wipe the 32-bit partition from the 250GB drive and replace it with the 64-bit image...

That's a convoluted way of saying "thank you", I'll try again and may stay the course after all.

Hmm... spent yesterday happily installing Office 2007 and trying to partition the drive, which worked BUT I couldn't change the boot partition size beyond what Windows let me shrink it to... As I only have 100GB to play with, I'd like C:\ to be about 20GB and devote the rest to a partition for documents and user settings. No dice. Both Acronis products I use (True Image and Disk Director) are home/small office builds; to get a Server build I'd have to pay close to $700!

f0dder - looks like your suggestion that I simply buy Vista 64-bit was right on the money! I can get an OEM copy for $225 Canadian, which would leave me more than enough left over to buy a big, bad 7200 rpm drive (I can dream, can't I?).\

At any rate, I like Windows Server 2008 a lot, but can't see myself making the switch unless I can find a cheap/free way that will allow me to back up my installation and perform basic disk management tasks, like shrinking and extending partitions...

FWIW

Hello Darwin,
no, Nitro PDF does not do any OCR at all. It just embeds bitmaps and the created PDFs are consequently not fully searchable. I guess you have tried omnipage OCR?

Hope the avatar shows off my brain capacity.

As does mine! Actually, Amud 1 has the highest recorded cranial capacity of any known hominin... However, given that it's empty space... you get my drift!

At any rate, I have Omnipage Pro and ReadIris Pro and both work well

I hear you, Dan (even if you won't tell me!). What a waste of time...  :o Computers are supposed to have enabled us and made life simpler and more convenient and yet I spend an obscene amout of time worrying about security and tweaking my system  >:(

I took advantage of this (I'm a software junkie, afterall  :-[) and noticed that one of the two exes that run when you invoke it is PosGlblInfo2.exe, which receives ratings from online databases that range from benign and trusted to a trojan. I only noticed when looking at Task Manager - I've scanned the file, the folder and my computer and Sophos (via Webroot Antivirus) reports that all is well.

For now, I'm leaving it alone but I'm wary of it, so am monitoring my system carefully.

Lutz_, no doubt I've asked this question and received an answer (from you or others) in the past, but does Nitro PDF also convert pdfs that are comprised of scanned images into searchable pdfs? Essentially, this would require the developer to ship Nitro PDF with OCR capabilities... I need a PDF solution for my XP machine and Scansoft won't do it (somehow manages to mess up the text in some of my applications - renders dialogues and things like the taskbar icon text into KOREAN?!).

Like the new avatar, BTW

I just tested my XP Pro installation - 93 seconds. That's absolutely fine with me! I should test my Vista installation (and then compare that to the same machine with Windows Server 2008 Standard), but I'm using it right now! Will do so later...

Hi dudude,

I use Noteburner for the same purpose and have had no problems with it. Crumb, just noticed it's $34.95 as well... I bought it at $19. I don't know of any solution for iTunes files that will remove the DRM without the computer being authorized to play the track, though... Don't know if that applies to you or not.

Drat! I just tried the beta of PS Tray Factory (which works great under Vista 32-bit) under Windows Server 2008 64-bit and no joy...  :(

Thus consider this posting a "bump" to The_Doomer's post above  :P

But would you not think, that they really should think about re-naming "POS" to a less ambiguous term?

Crap. The more I use this, the more I want the scheduling  >:( Bring on a promo (of course, it'll need to be a two user licence at about 75% off the server price  :o)!

If it's underrated you should replace it with one with a better rating :P

Great post, mwang   Thank you for sharing this - it'll be a big help as a reference when others (such as yours truly) set out upon this journey... With very little editing, you could post this as a mini-review. Better yet (from a DC reader's perspective, not necessarily from yours), you could edit this more extensively and extend it to make it a fully-fledged DC review.

What kind of enclosure are you using (Firewire or USB or other)? What kind of interface is/are the drive(s)? I have found that perfectly fine SATA drives in USB enclosures pretty much WILL NOT WORK with XP. I suspect that I've had a couple of cheap and nasty enclosures - can you swap the affected drive into an enclosure that you don't have this problem with? OK, I'm rambling now  :-[

Matters for laptops,  but for workstations?

With modern notebooks and efficient power management, boot time isn't much of an issue, either...

Am i the only one who didn't particularly enjoy half life?
Don't worry, every neighbourhood had weird kids that didnn't enjoy halflife. Most of them turned out OK.

f0dder, most of them also don't break their air conditioner for fun. They also do not hit on persons of the opposite sex which prefer members of the same sex (aka lesbians). Would you still call mouser normal?

?!  :o  :tellme: What have I been missing on the IRC channel?!

actually, it's the reverse... it should be implemented with a filter driver. ;)

What? You expect me to read? C'mon...  :P

Heh, heh - Curt, you linked to the article I was talking about  :-[ THAT"S the one I worked my way through. Anyway, not sure what to suggest about the keyboard issue - I suspect that the solution would be to go with a wired keyboard OR, as I do, simply set your computer to go to sleep rather than shutting it down. If you want it to reboot, select restart from the power options first thing in the morning... Alternatively, you could look into whether or not there is some Vista setting or third party utility (I'd check my keyboards driver as a first resort) to see if the wireless connection can be set up to be maintained when the computer is off. I'm not sure what that would do to your battery life, though (although I essentially do this by setting the computer to sleep rather than turning it off, and I get months out of two AAA batteries).

For those considering mirrorFolder but owning a license of SFFS (Darwin?).  I noticed that SFFS can now do simultaneous writing to two folders with a synch profile that runs in real time (!).

Thanks for that urlwolf! I haven't gotten around to checking out MirrorFolder yet, so will start with SFFS. I'll pay attention to f0dder's caveat, though  :o Hopefully, it's NOT implemented with a filter driver!

Darwin, why not simply install 64bit Vista instead of mucking around with the server stuff?

Er...  :-[ Actually, that's what I'd like to do! However, I messed up when I bought my notebook and bought one with a 32-bit OEM install. I'd have to pay full price for Vista 64-bit whereas as a student I was given a free licence for Windows Server 2008. As I had a spare SATA drive gathering dust, I thought I'd give it a whirl!
