App, stumbled on this a couple of days ago - http://www.soundborb.com

it's an ambient sound generator. i've had a brief game with it and it allows some customisation of the output (volume, intensity, happiness??) and there are quite a few alternative schemes available for download (program is an 18M D/L, schemes seem to be around 1M each).

it may not be quite what you're looking for, but it may get you by (you could even run it 'hidden' by starting it via AHK, or minimise it to the tray with one any number of apps)

at the risk of asking an obvious question, have you tried booting just the bare board (ie no CPU, memory, video, or drives)?

if you still get the same post error it would seem (to me, at least) to indicate the board

if you don't, then add peripherals till you do (and you'll be closer to the source of the problem)

you might also try flashing the bios (from a floppy or USB key)

can't speak for the search functionality as I rarely use it - I don't tend to collect loose tracks (it's generally the whole album) and i don't catalogue my HDD, so this may or may not suit your req's

I liked it because it was the only one that I'd found that displayed the way i wanted - by artist.

it's small and it doesn't try to be a one stop shop, which suits me fine

also worth noting that it used to be freeware (1.28 was the last I think - current ver is 2.4) so you may be able to find a copy of the free version if you google

got me there - serves me right for doing too many things at once!!

it isn't actually about the settings, it's a case of needing multiuser access to what would be a single account, ie everyone has access to the same account/store/box/whatever.

this way our mailbox can be archived centrally (ie outside of PST files), and used and managed by a small group of individuals (any or all of which may be using the archive at any given time)

I had the bit about 'users can access there own stores...' going round in my head, i hadn't actually gotten round to thinking about whether or not multiple users could be assigned to a single account or not (I assume this is what you were getting at???)

thanks for the link to the docs, I shall have a read...

haven't seen this one listed anywhere else here, but a possible alternative is simon tellini's MP3 Cat

I tried a heap of these things several years ago and settled on this one (sadly it's no longer freeware)

Carol

got that, looks like it is feasible, as long as all users are admins (not that this is a particular problem in this case)

shall have to look at this further

many thanks!!

Carol

do you have any experience with this tool in a group environment??

reason I ask is we have been looking for a similar tool that can centralise archiving (for our group mailbox) and (this is most important) allow multiple users to access and search the archive - i browsed the site but don't see anything that indicates whether or not this functionality is available.

To date the only real recommendation seems to have been sharepoint, but this requires a server (which is not an option)

apologies for resurrecting a dead thread, but it seems appropriate...

ran across this today on FWT - WFWPAM

haven't used it, so I can't comment, but there seems to be a lot of people here using the windows firewall so this might be of interest

Help the average user to change and manage settings of the embedded firewall

Is a free tool that can help the average user to change and manage settings of the embedded firewall in Windows XP giving many extra options regarding the firewall

another possible alternative - VisitURL

no longer developed, but I used it for quite a while (albeit sometime ago) and it's works a treat

can capture urls from the clipboard or (apparently) import from (or export to) a file - captured URLs can be opened as a batch in your browser of choice, and/or saved as 'permanent' list.

you might be sorry you got me started...

rudeness, and/or a total lack of consideration of others

people who insist on carrying on very loud speaker phone conversations in public places...

people who can't match the posted speed limit, until you get to a passing zone...

posters who drag a thread off topic (and those who go with them, and with them, and with them...)

flamewars, and/or name calling in a forum (what are you, 5?)

reality TV (seems like this has to be an oxymoron...)

and and and and...

ran across this one this morning and it may be of interest to others

Shock 4way desktop - 3D

it's a aero (?) style 4 pane virtual desktop manager (there is also a 2D version)

info on the site is pretty sparse, but it's listed as freeware...

Target

EDIT - registration (free) required...the effect is quite cool, whether or not it's useful is another (YMMV)

1744
Aston is actually an alternative shell, rather than a virtual desktop manager (perhaps it includes that functionality?)

Use VBA to generate a graphical representation of a hierarchical data structure in Excel

the real challenge here is that I have to do it primarily using the VBA help only as none of my texts covers this subject (drawing and/or diagrams) :'(

General Software Discussion / Re: Do You Purchase Software on Impulse?

I suspect Vista would be classed as an impulse buy...

My own needs are meager, so I can always get away with freeware - last check I think I had about 2G hoarded away, of which I've probably only ever looked at about 5% (maybe...)

can't imagine how i'd feel if I'd done that with $ware :o

So, is Nero itself a bloated application or is the nero SUITE bloated? I would like to see a burner only option too, but I dont consider nero ON ITS OWN to be bloated. Quite the contrary. Yes, I have to download ~200mb of data, but I only install about 20-30.

this is bloat, ie Nero install 20-30M, ImgBurn 1M (burnaware Free ed - 3m, Burn At Once (an old fave) - 6M, small CD writer - 330K!!). Granted ImgBurn only writes images, but there are plenty of alternatives

I suspect that with a bit of hunting around you could get pretty much all the functionality from several apps that you get in the Nero suite with a total install size comparable with the burner (20-30M)

Any why would anyone (regardless of their available bandwidth) want to D/L a 200M installer to get a 30M app??
