My only suggestion is to make sure the link to get/find/make a license key is super easy to find. Maybe even put it into multiple drop-down menus (such as Software -> Get a License Key, and Help -> Get a License Key, and Licensing -> Get a License Key) so that you'd have to try really hard to miss it.

I don't know why so many people seem to have such a hard time with finding their key, but I think implementing something like the above would do a lot to help alleviate the problem.

Looks like a classic example of the ol' bait and switch spammer.

New account (tricksy spammer) asks seemingly innocuous question. Regular forum members respond with helpful replies. A couple days later another new account (but still the same tricksy spammer) answers the original inquiry with a spam link to a sketchy website.

This is a bit of a necro-thread revival, but...

I just learned about nosupportlinuxhosting.com which offers $1/mo shared hosting plans.

Do you like paying extra so other people can ask amateur questions? That's how it is at other hosting companies where beginners and experts pay the same price. Beginners drive up the cost by asking a lot of novice support questions while the experts don't contact support. That is great for amateurs, and unfair to the experts like you.

No Support Linux Hosting has a completely different business model. We ignore the support questions, and pass the savings on to you! If you are an expert who does not want to pay extra for help with amateur support issues, then you can host with us and save big money.

Nice to see how much more consumer friendly they're getting as far as initial setup and calibration goes.

This is the first time I've heard of the flexible filament. That's really cool!

Here are some really great, high quality photos of dogs in the act of catching (or attempting to catch) treats in mid-air:

Glympse is a fast, free and simple way to share your real-time location using GPS tracking, with any of your family, friends or co-workers!

I wonder if the Glympse developer's refrigerator is running...

Is he really that concerned that the GPS location of his fridge might change?

Wow... For some reason this thread hasn't shown up on my unread posts since it went silent for 9 months starting last year. I didn't know anyone else was still talking about Bitcoin here.

I don't have anything to add to the conversation at the moment. I'm just posting in the hopes that it will make future posts to this thread show up on my Unread Threads list.

So I get paid a few dollars worth of the Storj cryptocurrency each month for renting out some space on my HDD.

Storj cryptocurrency?

Yeah. The cryptocurrency world is booming. There is over $160 billion worth of value in various cryptocurrencies these days. Bitcoin was just the beginning (and is still the top dog, ranked #1). Take a look at CoinMarketCap for a quick look at the top cryptocurrencies ranked by market cap (value of each coin/token times the total number of coins/tokens). Storj (~#70) is a token that runs on the Ethereum (#2) network.

If you haven't been following cryptocurrencies, you owe it to yourself to do your due diligence on them. I was so proud of myself last year for finally doing something wise with my money by sticking a nice chunk of change into a CD at my bank so I could earn a return of 1.30% APY. That's $13 per year for every $1,000 locked up with the bank. That was a very competitive rate among all the banks I've looked into. I've been following cryptocurrencies with increasing attention since Renegade introduced me to Bitcoin about two years ago, and this year I looked deeper into crypto and regretted last year's investment decision. Bitcoin is up over 600% since this time last year. Ethereum is up over 2800% since this time last year. In my opinion, banks are quickly becoming obsolete. (And by that I mean over the next decade or two for the average person.)

Again, do your due diligence and "invest" wisely. There's plenty of risk involved. But there's also plenty of reward to be had.

Got a RasPi 2B sitting here, I think it just found a job ... Thanks!

Cool. I'd be interested in hearing your thoughts once you've had some experience with it.

I tried following those instructions to get it working on my Odroid C1, which IIRC is comparable to the RPi 2B, but it didn't work for me. But that was a couple of months ago and I can't remember exactly what the problem was, and I've since re-flashed the SD card in the interim. So I'm just running the Storj share client on my Windows machine.

And if anyone here actually tries out the storage part of Storj, I'd like to hear your thoughts on that as well.

I recently learned about these services and decided to allocate some of my HDD space for a Storj farm to get an idea of how it works. So I get paid a few dollars worth of the Storj cryptocurrency each month for renting out some space on my HDD.

Damn, no ARM implementation ... there goes that use of the RasPi  :-\

Check again:

https://docs.storj.i...re-on-a-raspberry-pi

But note that it needs 1+ GB of RAM. So it needs to be one of the later models of the RPi.

Living Room / Decentralized Cloud Storage Services (Storj, Sia, etc.)
« Last post by Deozaan on August 26, 2017, 10:56 PM »
This was originally a response to the Crashplan thread.

Has anyone here heard of some of the new(ish) decentralized/distributed cloud storage services, such as Storj or Sia?

They're cheaper than, e.g., Amazon S3, Google Cloud, Microsoft Azure, etc., and have additional features such as privacy, since your data is broken up into little chunks, encrypted, and distributed across the drives of many different "storage farmers" who rent out their disk space.

Sia seems to be a lot cheaper, but also seems a bit more convoluted to set up. Storj is more expensive (than Sia, but still cheaper than Amazon S3, etc.) but appears to be fairly simple to set up. They've even partnered with FileZilla so now Storj services are built in to the latest version of FileZilla. Storj also offers 25GB free for 12 months. They might be worth looking into if you need cheap cloud storage.

Full disclosure: I recently learned about these services and decided to allocate some of my HDD space for a Storj farm to get an idea of how it works. So I get paid a few dollars worth of the Storj cryptocurrency each month for renting out some space on my HDD. As far as I know, there's no way to choose which farmer your data gets sent to, so there's no way for me to directly benefit from referring anyone. That said, there's a chance that if you do use Storj, some of your data could end up on my HDD and I will be compensated for renting out my space to you.

I also tried to rent out some space using Sia, but as I said, it is more convoluted. It requires you (as a "farmer") to put up some collateral and I wasn't sure enough that I had things configured correctly to want to risk losing my collateral.

I've updated the topic to change the word "better" to "simple" since that seems more accurate.

I recently "burned" a bunch of SD cards for a bunch of Raspberry Pis.  I found that Etcher was considerably slower than the copy of Win32DiskImager (.07) that I've had kicking around for years.  I didn't time it or anything, but I'd say it was at least twice as long with the exact same card and image file.

I wonder if the extra time it took has something to do with Etcher verifying the image was "burned" correctly as part of the process.

This is now old news (Summer/Fall 2016), but I've only just learned of it:

How Google Nearly Killed ProtonMail.

I'll give you a hint: Google can control which search results show up when people do a search for "encrypted email." Guess which Gmail competitor didn't show up in the search results?

Welcome to DonationCoder, and thanks for sharing your product here. How are you affiliated with this product? Are you the programmer who created it?

Would you please change the URL-shortened links to their actual destinations? Otherwise we can't see where the links lead us, and "shortlinks" are often used to disguise malware or other dangerous websites.

Thanks.
