+1 for Webmin.

Yes, set up a couple boxes for yourself and start playing.
Set up a few user accounts on  the main box and get the workstation to boot over the LAN, or at least login to an X (graphical) session from the workstation.

Once you get a grasp on that, the rest should come easier.

The acronym LAMP refers to a solution stack of software, usually free and open source software, used to run dynamic Web sites or servers. The original expansion is as follows:

    * Linux, referring to the operating system;
    * Apache, the Web server;
    * MySQL, the database management system (or database server);
    * one of several scripting languages: Perl, PHP or Python.[1]

It is the basic infrastructure for most Linux-based web content servers.
Whether you use the server for web stuff or not, it's a convenient package to get you everything a server would need.

This happened to me once after doing a go-through with CCleaner.
Hasn't happened since, but for a long time, I un-checked firefox stuff from the cleaning queue.
Did you do any cookie-and-temp-file-cleaning before this happened?
This will happen if you run CCleaner while Firefox is still open.

Very nice.
I am always looking to expand my audio experience with Linux, and especially now that the Ubuntu kernels are realtime enabled by default (w00t! w00t! w00t!).

As soon as I can sit down and actually FINISH one of my musical trainwrecks, I'll post it for everyone to (hopefully) enjoy.
Right now, I've been spending time at the diystompboxes forums gathering advice to fine tune my latest "secret weapon"...

Oh, I do love the smell of solder smoke at 2:00 in the morning...

The central server part should be easy.
Go with a Red Hat or Ubuntu LAMP server.

For the workstations, Edubuntu ought to work fine, but If you want to manage individual accounts from the server, are you thinking thin client on the workstations? If so, try here and here and a pdf here.

That ought to get you started, let's keep this ball rolling...

I'm pretty sure it comes with the free version as well.  Regardless, I have attached it here.  Let me know if this helps you.  :)

Yes, much! Thanks a million.

Yep it's there in my Backgrounds folder Island Dog...
I also prefer a 'plain' dock, and find myself using the Diamond skin (tabbed) and just colouring it to suit my needs!
Edvard, do yourself a favour and get the Plus version - tons more options including tabs..
Island Dog welcome to DC! From a 'cat' to a 'dog'... ;D

Right now I'm happy with the basics of what ObjectDock gives so I'll stick with it until I feel the itch.
Now if only somebody would write a Virtual Desktop Pager docklet...

No it's the 'hug' manoeuvre.... :P
Sorry I jumped in... manoeuvre bored.

You made quite a splash there...

Welcome to DC, Island Dog!

I hesitated to ask this question at WinCustomize because that'd be ONE MORE FORUM I have to keep track of, so I decided against it unless my good friends here couldn't help me.

Anyways... Yes, in all my Googling I saw a suggestion to check out the 'readme' in the backgrounds folder, but when I looked, there was none to be found, just a "Backgrounds Credit.txt".
Perhaps it only comes bundled with OD+?

In any case, if you would be so kind as to shoot over a copy of that file, I'd be most appreciative, and if there are any options not covered in the readme, please let me know.
I promise if I come up with something worth sharing, I'll sign up and show everybody, agreed? :D

General Software Discussion / Looking for a good ObjectDock skinning tutorial
« Last post by Edvard on July 06, 2009, 12:28 PM »
Every once in a while, I try out some new thingamabob to make my desktop experience easier.
This time it's ObjectDock. It looks nice, works well and it's free.

As always, I got annoyed with the backgrounds that were supplied for me because I prefer something a lot more conservative than the "teh @wesum" skins that litter the wincustomize forums.
However, every time I search for "object dock skinning tutorial howto" I get a hundred results on "how to change your background" which is what I don't need, and I can't find a damn thing on the Stardock website.
The closest I've found is Creating a Zoomer Dock Part 1 on the Wincustomize wiki, but it cops out at the last minute when it gets to the .ini file.  >:(

Grr...

What I really want is a step-by-step walkthrough of the "background.ini" file that goes in the folder with the images, which is where the magic happens.
Any takers?

I'm surprised nobody has mentioned OpenOffice? It's pretty fully-featured, but not as big and complex as the later MS Office versions (although it's just about as heavy startup-time wise). Has the advantage that it works reasonably well with MS .doc files (and .docx) as long as they don't use too fancy features.

Perhaps because the request was for "basic word processing".
OpenOffice is still my favorite and the new version is quite nice, but installing it does bring in draw, calc, base, math, etc.
Wait... can't that stuff be selected or deselected at install?
That might be the way to go...

« Last post by Edvard on July 01, 2009, 11:41 AM »
At the point when I finally broke down and started using credit cards (and later, debit cards), signing my name seemed superfluous. It finally occurred to me the readers couldn't distinguish my name from anything else. I began signing Elmer Fudd and Bugs Bunny, depending on my mood.

I use credit cards less than a dozen times a year, these days. Debit cards are another story, so Elmer Fudd is the norm. As I've gotten older, I morphed that to OldElmerFudd. It's one of my favorite nyms/user I.D.'s.
-OldElmerFudd (June 30, 2009, 01:44 AM)

HAHAHA!! I've only seen that one other time, but I think the whole concept is hilarious.

Whenever my father was successful at deer hunting, of course the hunting-is-a-great-excuse-to-drink-beer-in-the-woods crowd would ask him where he bagged such a prize.
He would soberly reply "Notellum creek" and go about his business, which would of course cause the interrogator to slowly nod in bewilderment "No... Tellum... creek... Yeah, ok. I thank I bin thar once..."

f0dder:  Ack! I didn't think about copy-protected CD's. It would be marginally humorous if it produced a copy-protected .iso  :P

P.S. I meant to try the dd trick myself at home, but forgot. I'll do it tonight and report back.

OFFTOPIC: I love this old slashdot comment on the Post-it/Sharpie method of defeating copy protection:
So, if I create something that resembles a CD, but really just uses the CD format to carry a harmful digital payload to damage your system, I'm just an artist protecting my rights.

but...

If I create something that resembles an email message, but really just uses the email message format to carry a harmful digital payload to damage your system, I'm just an evil hacker who's likely to be spending time in prison.

Yup. Makes sense to me.

f0dder: Gotcha on the bits/blocks, you are correct.
As far as ripping goes, I actually agree with you.
Personally I would at the very least go with the .cue/.bin pair and I'd definitely do a .flac rip if all I wanted was the audio.

But something like what dd does is exactly (as I read it...) what Fred wanted.
If you hashed the disc vs. the .iso and they matched, I'd call it good, no?

Or is their more to the story that you're about to enlighten me about?  ;)

If it's the imperfection of the transfer process we're worrried about, then I'd say it's an impossibility.

However, let us not give up.
There's a little command-line app from Unix/Linux land called 'dd' that does nothing but rip bits from one place to another, one after another.
Here's where to get a version for Windows: http://www.chrysocome.net/dd
and here's a MacOS page about how to go about it: http://www.macosxhin...ry=20031225124417353

What this does is force a bit-for-bit transfer into the .iso file which takes time and an awful lot of space, but apparently works.

I don't have an audio cd to test, but I did download it to feed it a few things and see what happens.
First, unzip it to somewhere in your path so it's easily gotten from a command window.
Then, insert the cd you want to copy.
dd --list
to get a list of drives. Look for a line like
\\.\Volume{bunchofrandomcharacters}\
  link to \\?\Device\CdRom0
  CD-ROM
  Mounted on \\.\d:
Make a note of the drive letter the where the CD is inserted and match it to the line where it says "link to \\?\Device\CdRomx" (substitute 'x' with the device number it reports. Usually 0 or 1). This is your block device, which is what we want.
Now start the transfer with a blocksize of 2048:
dd if=\\?\Device\CdRomx of=c:\temp\disk.iso bs=2048
Let me know how it goes...

In my experience, Audio CD's will compile to .bin or .img files, but not .iso because that's not what iso was meant for.

Since I'm on Linux, I found this page quite useful.
From the information I gather, compiling to a .cue/.bin pair will save all tracks, including hidden tracks and data.

@Fenixproductions: Sorry, I tried to secksify it with some shiny bubbles, drop shadows, table reflections, etc. but it just ruined the whole gestalt, sorry.  :(

Actually I'm very impressed that such a simple icon could so effectively communicate what the program is about without resorting to an actual screenshot.
