It's good to see that this thread is wrapping up on a more productive note..

I'm locking the thread now and suggest that anyone interested in support for Phrase Express raise their issues on the Phrase Express forum.

« Last post by mouser on February 14, 2010, 08:16 AM »
I fear malware scripts that will attempt to clickjack money from flattr users.

while i think you are right about how easy that would be to do.. if one is getting a report at the end of the month, and not spending too much per month, it would be easy to detect.  AND easy for flattr to undo the money given to the recipient before they are allowed to cash it out.  it would probably be pretty clear if large scale fraud was attempted.

agree about multiple clicks solution to giving one person more than others.

It's not that i don't think it's useful for us to have threads where people can complain about products, companies, etc.

I'm just having second thoughts about the responsibility that comes along with having a section devoted to it - a feeling that it may seem to elevate the complaint to something more serious than one person's opinion..

Anyway, let's not discuss that here -- let's close this thread and discuss it in a separate thread.

I think everyone has had their say here, and all sides made their case.  Time to move on.

Screenshot Captor / Re: Capture Area
« Last post by mouser on February 13, 2010, 07:31 PM »
The normal PrtScr button should capture the entire screen.  you could try ctrl+prtscr too, which is designed to capture all monitors of a multi-monitor system.

If you are seeing the redbox, then you are triggering REGION or OBJECT capture, which is not for full screen.

You want to use just plain PrtScr key which should immediately capture the entire screen.

Your hotkeys config should look like this:
Screenshot - 2_13_2010 , 7_29_08 PM.png

If you still can't get it to work, can you attach an example of what it captures when you hit PrtScr?

i think this thread has convinced me that we really shouldn't have a dedicated Complaint Section on the forum.. it was a reasonable idea but it's just not appropriate here unless we want to get into these kinds of arguments regularly.

ok guys and gals, let's wind down this thread.. if you feel absolutely compelled to say something that hasn't been said, and feel like you need to get in another punch before the teachers break up the fight, go for it, then let's lock this unfortunate thread and move on.

Arguing about the validity of his claims is exactly what is going to open up all this stuff again.. how can we expect someone to not reply to a thread claiming he has no proof people are stealing his work?  sigh.. this has really become counter-productive.

I don't want to re-litigate this and dredge up lots of arguments, etc., but for the record, Bartels has posted some pretty damn clear evidence that other companies are in some cases actually stealing byte-for-byte files that he has written for his program and using it in their programs which are based on his work.

Again, i really don't want to get into a debate about the wisdom of trying to have these arguments on our forum, but i think some sympathy is due for someone who may (rightly in some cases) feel like other companies are stealing his work and then posting here about their products.

furthermore, i hate to disagree with other mods, but i think it's simply unfair to have a post complaining about someone or their company, and then have them banned so they can't reply.  that's just not right imho.  a person should be allowed to defend themselves.

i'm not saying that bartels hasn't really rubbed people the wrong way with many posts, but there has to be a better way to handle this.

wait what? im not sure i agree with that ban..
in fact i really feel strongly that banning should be a drastic last resort that should only be used in the most extreme cases and for spammers.
let's talk about this offline.

« Last post by mouser on February 13, 2010, 02:43 AM »
If you find you're "messing up" your computer with multiple installs/uninstalls,

I still say the best way to handle this is by using a Virtual Machine for testing software until you are sure you want it.
I would avoid System Restore for anything but catastrophic crashes -- it's just too risky that you will roll back some user data you didn't want to.

This doesn't really go to the issue about whether we should *try* ads on site to experiment with them, but the more i think about it the more sure i am that DonationCoder should never move to an advertising-based site.

There can be no doubt that there are many small indie sites who simply could never have existed without the revenue provided by web adverts, and so i'm in no position to say that they are a bad thing categorically.

But I am troubled by how the entire internet seems to be moving to content funded by advertisements, and I think being funded by voluntary donations from actual users is an entirely different and much more healthy way of existing in the long term.

So as long as we can survive on our donations, and there is absolutely nothing to indicate that we can't for the forseeable long-term future, i think the current model works well for us and see no reason to change it.

Even in just moving the bare bones, I don't think it's nearly as trivial as you guys are suggesting for a large site like ours.. there are so many little things to get right, links between threads, the sheer # of subforums and different permissions, the different groups, etc.

Hi CO, glad to have you posting.

One of the best things about DC is when software users and authors can discuss ides and test software and discuss ways to improve it.

I think it would help to give people a link to the web page where they can learn about the program, not just a download link!

The web page is: http://sliderdock.wikidot.com/

The web page has videos as well as screenshots, here's one to get an idea:
medium.jpg

The program is similar to Circle Dock (a project written by other DC members) and Ciano Dock, also discussed on the forums.  Perhaps DC needs to have a special area devoted to discussion of RDP, aka Round Dock Phenomena :)

Let's demonstrate the DC spirit and give some feedback to the author to help him improve it!

From lifehacker comes news of this very elegant full screen, clutterless display of weather in your area from the weather underground website.  Would be nice to use this in a screensaver that auto-refreshed it (anyone know of such a screensaver?)
