Extended Offer
Based on tremendous customer response SlySoft management has decided to extend both the current 20% promotion and lifetime free updates until Sunday, January 11 2009 to give everybody a chance to sneak a peak at 2009 prices and subscription fees for better comparison

According to their website, SlySoft has now extended the offer until January 18, 2009.

Thanks cyberdiva. I wonder what is driving Gordon w/all these extensions?

Thanks, Chris. This exchange has been making me a tad uncomfortable as well   :o I appreciate the frustrations on both sides, but perhaps this conversation can be moved to a private forum (e-mail, PM, etc.).

Having said that, I always appreciate having developers participating in our discussions.

Car crash/trainwreck syndrome, eh? A "tad uncomfortable", but you just can't turn away from it, or avert your gaze. No?   8)

General Software Discussion / Re: calendar software - free
« Last post by J-Mac on January 11, 2009, 11:14 PM »
I haven't found what I am looking for yet. Not sure if a HTML calendar is the answer or not.  Any free ones to recommend?

Not certain about the first listed but the Airset, Google, and Mozilla ones are all free.

That's hardly an explanation. He was trying to make money by spamming people's browsers without their consent. Unacceptable.

Ehtyar.

Agreed. Some things are simply not forgivable in this business. (At least by me)

Oh, you must give AirSet a look. Group calendars with separate personal calendars for each member of the group, task list, blogs, contacts, and more. Nice setup.

I downloaded this through the automatic update and then I realized it broke everything I liked about it, so I also made the switch to Speed Dial.

It's a pity, since I'd been very happy with Fast Dial for quite a number of months until these past two updates that occurred within days of each other.

Trust no one, Scully!

General Software Discussion / Re: Firefox not safe at all
« Last post by J-Mac on January 10, 2009, 01:51 AM »
Well, many of IE's patches address multiple threats, many of Firefox's patches are against theoretical threats, Microsoft only counted IE7 against Firefox 2 & 3 in the study, plus the amount of time the threats had the browser exposed for IE is much greater - one was ID's seven years prior and was just patched in 2008.

What Microsoft claimed is called FUD.   ;)

FARR Plugins and Aliases / Re: FARR Plugin: PopQuotes - Search quote/fortune files
« Last post by J-Mac on January 10, 2009, 01:24 AM »
OK, seems to be alright now. I switched from the books that come with this plugin to my Pop Wisdom books and had to go through exactly the same problems mentioned by ewemoa: at first wouldn’t load the new books location, the dialog to locate thenm opens behind the current window - hiding, then the forst time I tried I got an access violation, then I restarted FARR and when I tried to use popq FARR quit. Had to restart again and then it all worked. Whew!

Need a little touch up there, mouser!

Hi mouser. I cannot seem to get this one working. I placed the popq plugin folder where it belongs, then activated the plugin, selected the books. However when I try a search using it I get other results that are not coming from the quotes books at all. And I am not seeing any results from the books.

Is there a step I am missing?

Thanks!

Shell integration. TeraCopy can completely replace Explorer copy and move functions, allowing you work with files as usual.

Can but doesn’t have to. It is configurable. Make it what you want.

The extension Speed Dial is comparable and has no such pitfalls AFAICT.

Hi Andrea and all,

I would like to put in a plug here for Direct Access and its creator, Andrea. She has gotten a blizzard of messages from me. She has been prompt and her responses have been very helpful. Each one was hand written and pertained directly to my question rather than canned text that was tangentially relevant if at all.

I resisted trying Direct Access for a long time because I was using AutoHotkey and saw no real use for it. Having tried it, however, I must say I am a convert. Also, I have looked at a number of similar apps and have found Direct Access to have the best interface of the bunch.

If you've not tried it, take a look at it. You couldn't want a more helpful app or better support.

Oh yes, and while I am at it, I would like to thank Darwin (Thanks Mike!) for all his help and input regarding these programs as well. I can tell you that thanks to me, he has gotten little, if at all, work done on his Ph.D. lately. :)

Ken

OK - I see what he did with the search engine. He added the site "User Logos" to the search locations. The Firefox search bar allows you to add more search engines. The one he added was to get logos for sites added to Fast Dial that don’t have a favicon associated. Though he did not make that search location the default, he just added it as a location. No harm, but he should have asked!

Two suggestions:

  •   Hide it in plain sight. Put a list of passwords in the email and let your friend know in another email or a phone call which is the real one. Not entirely effective "security by obscurity" but it can work.
  • Set up a cipher and encode the message before sending it. Then send your code word to your friend another way. Use a standard Vigenere Cipher.

I installed that update the other day. The interface itself looked horrible! The tab bar triple in height. I uninstalled it and instead installed Speed Dial.

For the record, my default search engine was NOT changed, my home page did not change either. I cannot say whether or not the first three windows of the Fast Dial thing changed as I uninstalled it before I even looked at it.

So was the add-on screwed up? Definitely! Did it make malware-like changes on my computer? Nope. Not a one. Just lucky, I guess!

Thanks!

Oh sorry. I'm just recalling from memories.

I think I felt that way because switching from the normal copy-paste functions to teracopy's copy-paste function felt more unnatural than total copy's instant separation of both functions through only changing the right click copy options.
Maybe I'm not seeing that because I installed the Copy and Move icons into the Directory Opus and Total Commander interfaces and use them to sue Teracopy. If I just drag and drop the native copy is used.

Haven't read the entire topic but I did a search and this app wasn't mentioned here:

http://www.ranvik.net/totalcopy/

I can't remember why I switched from teracopy to this app but I think it was just the comfort in also having the regular copy paste operations in case something went wrong.

I use Teracopy and I still have my copy and paste functions. Why do you say that?

Ok, so let's say I was copying from my laptop's internal drive from one partition to another or from a drive to an external drive connected via USB. At last virus scan, the file count was close to 2M. Most of these are very small files. Would either terracopy or McTool copy them faster than Windows Vista 64, directory opus, or xyplorer?

Thanks, Ken

Ken, I haven't tried any copy jobs quite that large!  But I have done some rather large jobs and Teracopy does do it faster than Directory Opus. I haven't clocked it but I remember this was the reason I tried the free version of Teracopy in the first pace. DOpus was copying well but not very fast, so I thought I would try Teracopy - It definitely was faster but I haven't actually timed it.

I have not copied anything using bare Explorer in a while - I am using DOpus for about a year and Total Commander for several years before that.

Thread here: http://www.wildersse...wthread.php?t=174030

Mixed reviews - some love it, others hat it. That's the problem with AS software these days and reviews are unhelpful as there seem to be a fair number of bogus reviews knocking about the internet.

Thanks for the link, Carol.

The one thing good about Wilders - you can find whatever flavor of answer that you want there! I use it for NOD32 and for Acronis, and your comment about the SAS reviews is pretty much appropriate for most other products there also.

Oddly, I have heard nothing but good about SAS in the past, though I admit I never tried it personally.  8)

Thanks!
