I don't think that you lose access to documents or files.

I also don't think that the Office365 price is excessive.
In the UK I can buy a 5 computer licence for between £50 and £60 from Amazon which can last 13 months (by switching to automatic renewal which you then turn off to enter your new annual code). And that also gives you 1TB storage. I can remember the prices that Bill Gates charged.

You don't, and I agree it's quite good, and agree that the price isn't exorbitant.

I think of writemonkey more as a strict editing tool rather than a writer's tool.  I use it alongside my writing tools- I love the distraction free writing, and the ability to play music while you're there.  But managing projects and such, I find that it falls flat.

And on another note, your continued posting in this thread reminds me that I need to get on the stick and write my own LOL.

In terms of getting paid for lines of code, you could convert that to hours after you figure out what the average lines per hour are. Then you just need to divide the current total number of lines by  the ALPH (average lines per hour) to get your hours figure. I'm stuck on the hourly figure because I think most people can relate to that.

Everything doesn't boil down to how much code, however.  Much time is spent in coming up with a good design, and that, I don't think, translates well.  In fact, the highest paid programmers are paid for their knowledge more than their coding ability.  And some of the most useful software doesn't have that many lines of code.

I just did an activation of an older copy of office recently, so not sure what the disconnect is.  Does it say that he attempted to call Microsoft support to straighten it out?  Or is this merely another from of FUD?

There appears to be hope if a new player comes on the scene.

I'm afraid, unless some young enthusiast of FREEware comes to us, the answer will be to bow out. All 3 current contributors have health issues & none of us are young anymore.

I'm afraid I fall into the same category, but perhaps someone else will step up...

So, I'm not a photographer, though my wife is.  And she made me realize the effects of light on your photographs, no matter what they are.  And so I purchased a light box for taking my keyboard photos.  And it's made such a difference!

I purchased an OrangeMonkie Foldio2, and wanted to recommend it.

It, plus having a separate shutter control (a Just Mobile ShutterGrip - https://just-mobile....ariant=9787265220650) has changed the quality of even my pictures.

This.  As I said, I dismissed it as I must have shared it before.  But some of it is inexplainable, like pinterest knowing (without me linking it to other platforms) that it was my anniversary month, and showing me gifts.  And I don't even talk about any family on any platform.  That was creepy.

Several boardgames have sites like that, and they're cool... and addictive.

http://www.slothninja.com/
http://www.yucata.de/en/
http://www.mabiweb.com/index.php
http://www.amarriner.com/rb/

The first three have several games... the last one is only Roads and Boats.

Maybe we can get together a group that likes to play at a leisurely pace to play some of these.

I have... and just discounted it as I must have done something online.  About seemingly random stuff that I do, but don't have any online relationship with.  And not with facebook- I barely use that.  But ads in strange places.

The Flame in the Flood is free for the next 2 days, give or take a few hours.  I already have it, and recommend it.

In absence of xmarks, I looked at a few different extensions that are on the store:

Papaly - https://chrome.googl...nllnddofbbn?hl=en-US

It's what I'm using after dismissing the other two pretty quickly.

Pros: It syncs with your bookmarks.
Cons: The sync appears to be one way, so you just have to use their 'new tab page' in order to access your bookmarks.  There is no android app for now.  Has no paid options, and blog was last updated in 2016.

It's been pretty cool... I have a lot of bookmarks, so it can be not instantaneous to switch tabs, but it is pretty quick, nonetheless.  It takes some getting used to- not using your bookmarks bar.  It has an extension that puts bookmarks directly into it.  The only downside is that you don't have it locally at that point.  It also syncs additions to the bookmarks and allows you to sync open tabs.  I'm satisfied with it for now, even if it wasn't exactly what I was looking for.  My only reservation is that it has no paid options, so I'm not sure how they make money.

I did send out an inquiry before I become to comfortable because of this.

Bookmark Manager - https://chrome.googl...kbapjopfjik?hl=en-US

Pros: It's by Google, It uses your google bookmarks account
Cons: It's by Google, It uses your google bookmarks account, and you have to sign into chrome.

I've been resisting the almost inexorable call from Google to sign into my browser.  Not about to start now, so  on this one.  Google also deprecates services (I thought they had deprecated bookmarks at one time), so not about to get burned by another company to go for a company that burns products.

EverSync - https://chrome.googl...hhmppcggdog?hl=en-US

Looked quite promising.  Checked the site, though at http://www.everhelpe....me/synchronizer.php.  Saw pricing, and checked that.

http://www.everhelpe.../everhelperplans.php

$44.99 for a bookmarks synchronizer?  Per year?  Not likely.

I also thought about ymarks, but even though it looks promising, being realistic, it's a bit much for me on top of everything else I have on my plate right now.

There's also syncmarx (https://syncmarx.mcleodgaming.com/), but it's alpha, so didn't trial that.

I've bought laptops from MS before, and the cool thing about them is they are the same as from the manufacturer, but a signature edition, meaning they're clean of all of the junk that the manufacturer's install.  They've been great in my experience.

wraith, I tried it, and it *requires* me to fill in all the fields (which I don't need).  Also, I really want a recent menu - that's the main reason I don't like rss builder so much - it doesn't remember your last feed and you always have to fetch the path.  I guess I could try to build it myself and fix it the way I want...

So those are the only two changes you need?
1720
Nope.  Not just you.

I'd say start with the lists that you have been given, and decide on the split based on your gut.  I don't think that anyone will begrudge your decisions.  When dealing with money, I find that a single consolidated vision is better than a chorus of voices.

Thanks!

General Software Discussion / Re: PSA: New RightNote upgrade
« Last post by wraith808 on May 03, 2018, 10:19 PM »
I really, really wish installers were made to check for this, before running.

I agree with you.  It's also why I really like point upgrades, instead of time based ones.  If you're not going to give lifetime licenses as standard, make it for a revision.  It makes it clearer than saying something weasely like 12 months.  Who keeps up with that?  Or if you're going to do time-based, embed the time into the license, and display it to the user on the interface that they're out of their license.

General Software Discussion / PSA: New RightNote upgrade
« Last post by wraith808 on May 03, 2018, 03:17 PM »
I bought Rightnote, but quickly decided it wasn't for me, and went back to Evernote.  I figured this alert might be good for people using RightNote, that might not read it before updating.

Text of e-mail:

Hi there,

We recently released v4.4.2 of RightNote. A couple of users were upset to find out that their current license no longer worked with this version - only after they had gone to the trouble of installing the update. They would have liked to be informed about this before updating - not after.

So I am writing this message just to inform you, that a RightNote license includes free updates for a period of 12 months. After that period your license will not work with further updates, and if you do update, the Program will revert to the Freeware edition, where certain notes are read-only. (Of course this does not apply to Lifetime upgrade licenses)

You can best tell when you purchased your license by going to Help->About.

So once again my apologies to those of you who had this upset, and I hope to include a warning about this in upcoming versions.

A DuckDuckGo search for "windows program generate password text" turned up quite a few password-oriented hash programs and web sites, some with Android (or iStuff) apps as well.  E.g.:

The last two have the same link.  Was that intentional or was one missed?
