Mini-Reviews by Members / Re: Tray Management Utilities Mini-Review
« Last post by Darwin on November 28, 2008, 05:51 PM »
I sent two emails to "support" (first one sent 8 days before today) and have been completely ignored.

FWIW - I had occasion to write to support recently as well and have not had a response*.

*Of course, I wrote yesterday and today is a holiday in the US...

I'd given up on PSTray Factory and Vista (version 2.5 installs fine but does nothing)

- odd!! I installed 2.5 on Vista (only heard of the 2.63 today), and it worked as it did on XP; fine!

This is indeed odd, Curt - glad it works for you, though.

One of the few products Ashampoo have never offerered me (they offer me almost everything regularly including out of date versions and name your price). I finally unsubscribed to the emails having got sick of the constant deluge of offers for versions of software earlier than the ones I actually bought!

I didn't bother unsubscribing - I just consigned them to electronic purgatory (spam filter).

I should know if they are expensive or not. I have 4.985 Yiggles

[off-topic] 5494 here  :-[

Have you ever used your discount, though, Curt? It's far cheaper to wait for them to offer you a deal (like the Core Tuner one that I mentioned) as you can't actually use your Yiggles on already discounted applications and the discounts are usually greater than 60% (let alone the 40% to which you and I are entitled)[/off-topic]

with the current setup, I have rarely seen my total free RAM as reported by Task Manager fall below 1GB free

I very rarely have that much memory free.
You just don't have enough applications Darwin   ;D

I have 335 applications installed  :P

But I still think PS Tray Factory is a little "hard" on the computer. Everytime I have clicked anything inside the popup and is "closing" the popup again, the CPU will speed up its use.

I just checked this with Vista, XP and Win2k. Under Vista (dual core processor) there is a micro-second blip to 1% when I click on the tray icon and another blip to 15% when I open the main window. XP Pro (single core) oddly sits at 1-3% CPU usage even when "quiet" and goes to 17% when I click on the tray icon and 29% when I open the main window. Under Win2k (PIIE-E - equivalent to about 1/4 core by today's standards!) sits between 0 and 1% all the time, goes to 5% when I click on the tray icon and to 17% when I open the main window. Under both XP and Win2k, CPU utilization is elevated until I close out the window I am viewing (either the context menu for tray icon or the main window).

even on my new quad core Vista.

Now you're just showing off!

I'm currently running all of my normal stuff plus Google Chrome and have used only 1 GB RAM.  I'm using Process Explorer and I have been sitting at 1GB.  I've got  8 freaking tabs open plus I'm watching a movie* with VLC on top of all the other RAM sucking things I run normally.  WTF?  Is XP really that good at RAM management?

Well... on my aging Centrino notebook (first generatrion, single core, 1.4Ghz) I've upgrade my RAM from 512MB to 1Gb and finally to 2GB and with the current setup, I have rarely seen my total free RAM as reported by Task Manager fall below 1GB free - that's with every Office 2007 app installed (Word, Excel, Access, Outlook and Powerpoint) open with a couple of files open in each AND with Maxthon 2 running with numerous tabs open AND with Corel Paint Shop Pro Photo X2 open... In my experience, XP is pretty good. Vista is better, mind you!

Ashampoo keeps trying to sell me "Ashampoo Core Tuner" for $9.95. From what little I can glean from the internet, this type of application is snakeoil, no?
1710
FWIW, Sunbelt is selling Vipre today for $9.95. When you checkout, you are also offered the Sunbelt Personal Firewall for $9.95 as well. In addition, they have multi-licence deals - an unlimited home licence for Vipre is $49.95 (I think).

Click link for deal:

EDIT: Just to note, the deal linked to is no longer active.

I wrote to the developer immediately after making the post above no word, yet, but I'll report back when I do hear form him or her. What has me a bit puzzled is that the purchases were made in 2006... so well before Feb 2008.
1712
Oh, I'm not disputing your observations (just contradicting 'em  :P) - I know LOTS of users have reported the same problem. In fact, I left X1 for Archivarius two years ago for that reason. Somehow, when I reinstalled X1 five or so months ago the problem had vanished and I've yet to see it. However, I do rub my rabbit's foot nightly before bed! X1 is set to index automatically on my systems and is set to start automatically as well. TextExtractor is the culprit when there IS CPU activity from X1 on my systems, but it rarely exceeds more than 15%.

FWIW - I have Indexing Priority set to "Delay indexing up to 60 minutes if PC is in use" and indexing updates set to 60 minute intervals. I have the "Index local files in real-time" option enabled as well.

I have about 60GB of data indexed on each machine (they largely mirror each other) of which 10 GB are PDF files and a further 10 GB are powerpoint presentations and word documents.

If it is, their IP filtering sucks - I'm Canadian, using a Canadian ISP.

This time he avoided the can/cannot babbling

- and offers an extra four weeks of license. Wow, I am impressed (or am I?)!

I received the same e-mail and was somewhat... underwhelmed as well. Honestly, if DA were still part of my workflow, $25 a year might be worth it, but not given my current usage of it. I've stopped running ActiveWords as well - it's usually just sitting there unused, so why let it tie up resources? I've gotten so used to using Windows shortcuts, True Launch Bar, and the mouse that I don't need much else. This is why I like FARR - it's very light on resources and if I need it, I just hit alt-spacebar and I'm off!
1716
Archivarius doesn't strain the CPU too much (yes, there'S a lot of HD activity...) but X1 does. And does it in a very irritating way. The textextractor process -- in particular -- is fairly voracious.

Not on my installations (XP Pro and Vista) - X1 is as light as a feather! Archivarius is a jewel, but I need the more advanced previewing capabilities that X1 offers and thus have relegated Archivarius to reserve status. dtSearch is sort of in between the two... very good previewing capabilities and easy on resources. However, it takes the longest of the three to index my drive.

NB Archivarius 4.14 is out and now indexes Acronis True Image files.

Thanks for posting back, Jim. I'm going to stop worrying about it. I suspect that because I bought the second licence through the same account as I did the first (ie same e-mail address and cc), a second "seat" was enabled on the original key. It's the only explanation that makes sense. I haven't written the developer yet, but will do so and post back if I get a response.

Yes, but the deal I was talking about was the discount for the lifetime license. Again advertised as just for today.

Sorry, thought you were referring to the giveaway. FWIW, I took advantage of the lifetime licence offer yesterday morning (the 26th) without any problem...

A wake up call for all of us - thank you for the public service, f0dder. My parents own one a cat and I've sent them an e-mail with a link to the page. Forewarned is forearmed, I say...

The page leads me to believe that the deal is only for today, but you know how those things go.
You're quite right. It's still there on the 27th. Doesn't make it any less useful though.

The giveaway has started on November 27th and will have continued until December 3rd, 2008

From the deal page.

Thanks for pointing this out to us, mouser. It's a  reminder about how to help our kids deal with failure (I'm a lost cause, but I hate seeing my wonderful six year old getting so frustrated when he's trying to achieve something beyond his abilities and "losing the rag") - remind them that when we fail, we're actually learning and are thus better equipped to face the next challenge.

I've encountered people who run multiple virus scanners concurrently, and always thought them a bit paranoid.  Am now questioning this assumption.

Opinions?

I assume that these people use one to scan their systems in real-time and use the other(s) to scan on demand? If this is indeed what they are doing, I can't see that it would help in the scenario that you describe. On the other hand, if they are running multiple AVs scanners in real-time, I'd expect them to experience serious stability problems running two or more AV scanners that are vying with each other for access to resources and rogue files.
1723
That's odd. After reinstalling XP Pro earlier this year I could not register PS Tray Factory; kept saying my code was invalid. I wrote the developer and he sent me a new key and told me exactly what I posted above.

Jim

That's odd, then, isn't it?! I'm concerned about having twin licences, so to speak, from separate purchases. I'm now wondering it two things are operating to have made this possible for me: the first licence I purchased is applied on my XP Pro machine and it's likely that I've never re-installed it/re-applied the serial as I use Acronis True Image when my system is rendered unstable by acts of stupidity on my part. The other possibility that occurs to me is that I've only ever used the beta version for Vista and Windows Server 2008. Although I've entered the serial number that I have for the second licence for those installs (same notebook - I swap the harddrives), it's possible that the beta doesn't actually require a serial number. Having said that, I *did* originally purchase the second licence for an installation of TrayFactory on my wife's now deceased XP Home notebook... that installation shouldn't have worked, though, because the licence is identical to the one already appllied on my own XP Pro machine. Bizarre!

Hi aoyase, that looks like a support issue to me! I'd write to the developer and explain what happened.
Thx Darwin, I'll be waiting

Looks like an innocent misunderstanding.... so who's gonna write support? :P

:o Doh! Hadn't noticed that possible interpretation of what I wrote! aoyase, if you haven't done so already, you should hit reply to the e-mail  you posted the screenshot of and write a note to the developer referring him or her to the Reference ID section of the note you're replying to and asking for help  :)
