Living Room / Re: Interesting...50x Faster Than BitTorrent
« Last post by Lashiec on October 17, 2007, 02:12 PM »
Debunked ;). Read the comments to find if it's possible to get amazing speeds in China using BitTorrent as well.

The article is so stupid I wanna barf. Simply, it gets everything wrong. Well, hello, it's Tech Crunch, masters of hype, and it seems they can't do a simple research on the original article, not understand some technology basics. And never heard of such amazing program before, this stinks of blatant marketing. Well done, Arrington and company...

Where do I start... first, there's no proof, only talk, if Blin is so impressive, I want to see it live, not hear some guys praising it. Second, god dammit, ask the first teenager in the street and they'll tell you where you can do the same provided you have a fast enough connection. Third, how come do you claim Blin faster than BitTorrent? Did you try it with Internet2 or something? Did you do a true test? As f0dder says, a torrent with enough seeds will go fast as hell, maxing out your connection, and we are forgetting about physical bottlenecks, you see, hard disks have a max speed, and you can't go faster than that.

TechCrunch, really, DO your research before posting stupid things, and do not include unnecessary paragraphs like the last one, which only serves for a fight between readers in the comments, which is totally out of the question. But to defend Tech Crunch, it should be said that, being a blog that focus on startups, it's understandable, but not acceptable.

Will Cody take the place of that fat, white bearded guy? ;)

I write plenty fast therefore an autocompleter would not bring any advantage at all ;)

Seriously, it would be a hit in my typing speed. For example, as I'm writing this, words are flowing from my mind directly to the keyboard and into the reply box. Adding an autocompleter, even if it could be set up properly, would break my writing flow, as it would force me to stop and look what it's being suggested to me. That's what it happens with OpenOffice autocompletion (and happened with Dev-C++), I stop to check what the box is telling me. In those two cases, it's not that annoying, as the nature of the task leads to get things right at first, while in situations like replying in a forum or using FARR (I'm not even looking at what I'm typing or launching in this case) or writing a mail, it's important (at least to me) to let ideas roaming my head go as fast as possible to the screen.

I suppose an autocompleter would be a good companion in repetitive typing tasks, but fortunately, I'm not doing too much of those.

General Software Discussion / Re: A program to simulate taskbar autohiding?

Fantastic! :-*. I have it here running in the tray, and works perfectly fine. I wish other languages were so easy to compile as AutoHotkey ;D

Whoa, Curt, those figures from Exalead look terrible! Not an option.

Darwin, don't bug him, or you feel his wrath! Look, he is starting already ;D

One of the conclusions I drew both from this thread and the one focused in note takers is that our fellow members handling a humongous amount of information need industrial strength solutions, or more precisely, almost custom ones. I wonder if such apps exist?

Exactly, I want everything if it's possible, thank you ;D

OK, enough jokes, let's go step by step. I'll give it a try tomorrow, as first I need to install AutoHotkey to compile the software, and get some sleep as well :D. I'll let you know how it went. Thanks for your hard work, João

Well, it seems that they still maintain logs with personal information like Google. Bad thing, even more if they're involved with Quaero (even if this seems to be stopped for the moment)

Anyway, let's get back to its desktop search counterpart.

I wonder, did anyone try Exalead?

EDIT: Hmmm, their search engine looks pretty cool. No privacy policy, though >:(

General Software Discussion / Re: Fixed Drive Letters for Removable Drives
« Last post by Lashiec on October 14, 2007, 05:35 PM »
I don't think so, mostly to avoid hardware conflicts. If you assign "F:" to your USB drive, it would work fine on your computer, for example, but could not do the same in other computers. If I'm correct, drive letters are assigned on boot up, and they follow a criteria for being assigned, like first SATA, then IDE and finally external ones.

But I'll love to be proved wrong, better for you :)

Autocompletion in OpenOffice and in Dev-C++, but somehow, the option in the latter worked like shit, so I deactivated it. I think I write pretty fast in the rest of apps to need autocompletion :P

Somewhat. The rendering engine is the same, but the rest of the code seems to be significantly different. After all, Galeon (the browser from which Epiphany was forked) was the first browser that tried to be just 'a browser'. Of course, much happened since then.

More or less is that what I want. It would be cool if it did the same for windows not docked to the screen, but freely floating along the desktop, but of course that would be a bit more work (or even not feasible). I wonder if the location system could be implemented as well, or it would be another unrealizable dream...
1719
Is the Skype Linux client open source? If it's not, any browser available for Linux can do the job, including Opera :D

If a open source browser is needed, you can either choose Epiphany (Gecko) or Konqueror (KHTML). Those are the best alternatives in my opinion. I wonder what toolkit is being used in SplashTop, the shots scream GTK, but could be they developed their own?

General Software Discussion / A program to simulate taskbar autohiding?
« Last post by Lashiec on October 13, 2007, 01:05 PM »
I like keeping my desktop as clean as possible, but I also like to have software accessible. With some software, those two desires clash. So the other day an idea popped in my head, and I told me it would be really nice if there was a program which could show desktop software like Rainlendar and RocketDock upon mouse hovering and hide then again once I moved the cursor away, exactly like Windows' taskbar.

So my question is: is there such software? Or do I have to resort myself to tray minimizers? It would be cool if it brings along other niceties, like configuring the amount of time after the window will hide, and some kind of locating system, like putting a small figure in the place where there's a window hiding, I even thought of a good system to do it if the app is snapped to the screen border :D. Now I'm almost requesting a feature ;D

A more in depth look at Phoronix. It looks like the idea of the embedded OS was a evolution from the GUI used in the Asus EEE notebook. Anyway, like hinted at the end of the Phoronix article, the best thing are the possibilities a feature likes this could poise for the future, both for users and for enthusiasts.

General Software Discussion / Re: What are your top 10 Tech/Software Blogs?
« Last post by Lashiec on October 12, 2007, 06:25 PM »
20,000 feed items! :o. You guys really work hard

OK, the selection of sites I check up daily barely reach the magic number, for reasons I disclose later. I usually go through the lighter sites in one rush, these include File Hippo, for the daily software updates, various emulation sites and Cybernetnews, which I recently started to check up in such fashion. The heavy sites come later, including Ars Technica, The Tech Report and ShackNews, the latter being a recent addition to replace a Spanish gaming site going downhill ;D

And that's all. Why not more sites? Well, the three mentioned later always led to some other sites to complement information or to give the scoop about what's going on somewhere, particularly the last two, which, apart from working in a semi cooperative fashion, have this 'shortbread' thing which summarises what other important tech and gaming sites carry in the front page.

I'll probably change later (read: when I have time and stop procrastinating after the daily reading ;D) the process, to be RSS based, as it's faster (now I'm checking up the entire sites, and it's time consuming, much more than I wish) and I can add more sites (for that I need to sort my huge bookmarks file :P). I also need a good reader... Now if most sites added properly written RSS feeds, instead of redacting mere link baits...

I think this qualifies as a rant :D
