General Software Discussion / Re: Best FREE IRC client?
« Last post by brotherS on November 21, 2005, 02:04 AM »
A program lacking support (Miranda) for such a heavily used feature as AOL File Transfer, which I personally use all the time, along with 20+ people on my buddy list. This is the main thing that keeps me on Trillian, even though development of Trillian is a rip-off IMHO.
Well, I always thought file transfer is mostly used by teens to trade mp3 files?

I use IM file transfer less than once a week (to DCC a log file maybe), I prefer to use http://www.yousendit.com for file transfers.

Publisher's Description:
Total Recorder records streaming audio, mic input, line-in input, and DVD & CD sounds. The recordings are saved to your hard-drive in either WAV or MP3 format. Convert different sound formats to WAV and MP3.

from another discussion:
[...] if you ever were to consider a program that costs money, I must say I have been a happy registered user of Total Recorder for 4+ years  (www.highcriteria.com)

I'm using a different program that I bought years ago but read about Total Recorder many times. I'm quite happy with the one I use but feel the need to search for one that allow me to automate recordings/use scripts to record stuff. I understand Total Recorder is good for that?

I hope vegas could go into details here and maybe show some screenshots or guide us to nice online tutorials :)

General Software Discussion / Re: program which lists new google page hits

I use a personal "start" page in all my browsers that I made myself. One of the prominent links is the the Google Advanced seach. http://www.google.co...dvanced_search?hl=en
Nice idea, I thought about such a personal page too, but wasn't able to do that then... Now I just use AutoHotkey to easily access my most needed stuff :)

You really are a Miranda fan, aren't you :)
Maybe...

I can't use Miranda just for IRC. That would be odd.. and the reason I say "just for IRC" is because I use Trillian Pro for everything else.
Well, you are totally right. You can't use Miranda just for IRC. No. Don't do it. Really, no. You should use Miranda for everything!

@nudone: good work!

I think using the $ is ok, it just shows where DonationCoder.com is located - and they use the $ in the international Donald Duck comics too if I recall correctly, even when they translate the bubbles.

Hi Innuendo, thanks a lot!

I'm using PaceMaker now - already sent a bug report to the coder :D

It's really funny to play with the sliders!  8) Only 10 years ago you would have had to pay LOTS of cash to be able to do something like this.

General Software Discussion / how to play mp3 files faster?
« Last post by brotherS on November 19, 2005, 04:30 AM »
Hi,

I remember seeing a plugin for Winamp to play mp3 files faster, but can't find it anymore. Does anyone know it? It would be perfect if I could set it to play mp3 files with 110, 120, ...150% of normal speed.

I often record discussions from radio and would like to hear those faster, as I'm able to understand most discussions faster than they talk :)

have you got the images (cars)?

if i've got some spare moments over the weekend i don't mind sticking the numbers on the screens - if that's all you want (you know, blended in, transformed perspective, etc).
I did just send you a message, thanks for your help!

I use TreeSize
Nighted and all: try WinDirStat - better than anything else in that direction I ever tested. Sure, it's not perfect, but it's fast and allowed me to delete 700 MB and to stumble over a program where I want to send the coder a bug report.

Would it be possible for you to email me the .m3u file that is showing the #EXTINF lines in the Load Server window?  You can just put in fake http streams if you'd like.
Since the playlist is just a text file I'll just send you a forum message with those - please don't spread it ;)

Mp3tag is VERY powerful and has a nice coder and forum too

I'd like to hear from someone who has really used both programs to see how they compare, i.e. for which tasks The GodFather might be better.

Not that I have to tag many mp3 files, but I still want to know :D

I've used SequoiaView for a long time... it's very nice!  For the same idea with more features and more updated-ness try WinDirStat (http://windirstat.sourceforge.net/).  This is what I've switched to from SequoiaView.
First impression: great! Funny Pacman-style HD checking :)

Damn, why isn't this on http://fileforum.betanews.com/ !?

Nice idea, I'll try it.

Too bad the last version dates back to "19-12-2002", the installer does not check for localized "program files" folder :-/

Living Room / Is there something like rent-a-coder but for graphics stuff?
« Last post by brotherS on November 18, 2005, 02:51 AM »
Hi,

is there something like http://www.rentacoder.com/ but for graphics stuff? Like logo layout, flyer layout, etc.?

Using Google, I was able to find http://www.getacoder.com/ (nice find, I must say!) which lists these categories:

Web Design / Development (1829)
Database Development (877)
Miscellaneous (102)
Gaming (129)
Writing (89)
Testing / Quality Assurance (20)
Administrative Support (44)
Requirements (16)
Training (7)
Programming (2415)
Graphics / Multimedia (540)
Marketing / Promotion (123)
Computer Platforms (224)
Engineering (77)
Security (35)
Project Management (20)
Legal (6)
Enterprise Resource Planning ( 8 )

Is there anything even better for what I'm looking for?

I don't need this program but I love the idea behind http://www.ucalc.com/freedeal.html !

Mouser should be interested, but giving points from A to Z is way too extreme IMHO :D

I would
- just use about five different ways of earning points max
- maybe give a referrer URL to every forum user so it could be tracked who is how successful (and to be able to give a few points for each new visitor)
- think more about this later ;)

Seems to be even harder to find than I thought  :(

brotherS,
thanks for the great find. Works beautifully.
You are welcome, wait for more great finds to follow :)

Now added to my utility cd for when I have to help out my friends. Things like this make my life so much easier.
Yeah, I was thinking about getting a cheap USB stick to directly run Miranda from it and also a few different other helpful programs.

Jazper's Software / Re: ShoutCast Concierge v1.0 Bug Reports
« Last post by brotherS on November 18, 2005, 12:56 AM »
Crosspost; I felt this should be in here too :)

Ok, here is what I'll call V1.0 Beta.  Have at it, tell me what you like/dislike, or want added or removed.
Thanks, I see you really got into it! :)

Here are my thoughts:
- make the "Load Servers" window resiszable or at least bigger, it now shows only 4.5 streams at once.

- in the "Load Servers" window, hide the "#EXTINF" lines

- add the "enable" checkmarks again?

- running the .exe again while cause to load a second copy :-/

- if you could, make it check if it's exe is already running when it's started: if it's...
...already running but minimized to the tray make it open the window
...already running but runs in window mode minimize it to the tray
...isn't running already start it up in window mode

- add something like skrommel's *great* "watch for song titles or artist names" idea (see above)

- make the main window more customizable:
  - let the user change the size
  - let the user change what kind of info that window should show
  - I would prefer a much smaller window, where I could have just the info most important to me visible,
    I like skrommel's approach here
  - allow the user to give the streams 'nick names', so that one knows *which* stream is "NA" (see #3 in screenshot)
  - allowing 'nick names' would also help to prevend problems with extremely long stream names (see #4 in screenshot)

Hmm, I wonder if we should use a new thread just for dev talk about ShoutcastConcierge?
