General Software Discussion / Re: Kingsoft Office
« Last post by Paul Keith on September 27, 2008, 11:25 PM »
Unfortunately this seems just like a tabbed up Office Suite when I checked it out. It obviously has some built in features like encryption and search boxes but I doubt that alone would get them some new customers.

I was disappointed by their Klonoa mascot though. Usually when people opt for this, it means the interface is much more user friendlier than your run of the mill OpenOffice and MS Office but what I saw staring in front of my eyes was a very foreign if not slightly similar to general Office Suite user interface. (Of course Tux is an exception to this but it's still an illusion downer)

General Software Discussion / Re: What are your opinions on sites like Hordit?

@Paul Keith

I see your point, I am waiting for google to come out with something like that. I wouldn't be surprised if they haven't already thought of it and already have something in the works.

Well technically if you combine Google Suite, IGoogle and Google Sites, that's what you get. I doubt they'll bother with it though. Google has a tendency to buy niche services more than bother with making these services.

Also, they often get a poor rep with privacy so I doubt they'll pursue this route. Google often dodges these by creating a better counterpart of an existing service but in the case of this, it's not popular enough.

By the way, has anyone tried the service? I'm still holding off because I'm not sure whether to trust this site or not. The disappearance of byteswap makes me extremely leery but I can't find a service quite like this.

Thanks but I don't think it's the same. The site is more like a legal document counterpart to Scrbd where Hordit is about all files in general.

f0dder, I think it's to appease the general audiences who don't know much about Dune. It's much more easier to relate to the cliche plotline of an evil mad conqueror than an equal struggle between three factions.

Don't get your high hopes on fanedit though. At first, I was impressed until I realize more than 50% of the fanedit there had no comments or reviews.

Yeah, after my recent trouble with extensions and now this, it's making me leave Firefox again.

This is such a critical bug, I'm surprised they haphazardly released an update.

Cloq, true enough however this is not an online backup per se (which is why I made it on a separate thread) as much as a Digg for File Sharing (which makes it more like Pownce) but with the intent on Profile making and File Gathering (which is more similar to FriendFeed, RSS Readers and Social Bookmarkers) that I'm not sure it applies much here since 99x of the focus is on documents (like Google Docs and Scribd) and less on mass downloading.

http://www.hordit.com/

Awhile back when I was searching for online backup services on my own, I found ByteSwap but never really tried it.

Today while organizing some of my files, I found the name again, did a search and Google linked me to this site and it seems alot has changed so my question to you all is, what are your opinions on the concept of "file profiling"?

Usually the saying goes that when something is too good to be true, it probably is but I could neither find an in depth good or bad review of this service which most services have in bundles so...your thoughts?

Haha, to each his own then. I could never ever feel like an ordinary Joe in HL even before I saw the Gordon Freeman artwork but that's my problem with most FPS. You make a guy so ordinary than it becomes unrealistic when he becomes a one man killing machine.
1709
I might just have to do that. This doesn't look like an extension problem, even just enabling and clicking on Adblock's option screen causes the extension page to freeze.

Hmm...strange. It does on mine here and I didn't do anything but install it. You're using the Windows version right?

Try it on this

It could be just that the file is corrupted. I never did check with another player.

well, the phantom menace was certainly better after they fan edited jar jar binks out of it.

google/youtube aren't going to promote/mention it as it's obviously violating copyright just to start editing someone's work without their consent.

Well google and yahoo certainly don't have a problem when you do a search for p2p.

I've thought for many years that this is going to be the future of movie making.  In the next decade i predict that when a new movie is released i theatres, the complete unedited raw footage of the shooting of the movie (hundreds of hours of different takes, etc.) will be available on the web for people to reassemble and re-edit.

Yeah, same here mouser that's why I'm hoping to jump the bandwagon before it catches on but so far no luck on finding a newb friendly guide.
1713
Thanks sri but I know of that extension already. I just never bothered because I often use the opportunity to use a blank version of Firefox to check out all the new extensions that I never tried just right around when a new version of FF is announced. (Best time to check out new extensions IMO)

Incompatible extensions don't bother me that much. It's the bugs that result from arguing extensions that causes me to pull my hair out of my head in frustration. (Tab Mix Plus and All-in-One Sidebar being famous for these)
1714
Yeah, I was considering that but I just wasn't in the mood. This requires going through all my extensions one by one which I just had to add on the day before an upgrade that I didn't know about and there's no easy way to tell the problem because all my extensions (meaning all those buttons disappeared) no longer work so...aaarrrgghhh...sorry, this is driving me to ADHD.

It's precisely the problem I had back then when I was starting out with Firefox so I specifically avoided all the troublesome add-ons and I was tolerant of extensions sometimes not working on the newer version but this is too much for me.

Oh and I just do the lazy way of having Flock around to import all the files I need when this happens but it's still annoying.
1715
Thanks.  :)

Oh well...back to mainly using Opera.

It's basically taking a movie and editing it.

Kind of like the many Youtube videos involving excerpts from one movie or another (I don't know how to do those either) except the intent here is to use the technique on an entire movie. Sometimes with the intent of improving the movie based on the editors' own vision.

I just did a search on DC about fan-edits and didn't find anything so I was wondering what this board's opinions on it are.

It seems even the frontpage of Google doesn't like it because I haven't found any software or howto guides about it.

So things were finally settling down and after fighting the temptation for so long, I just had to "increase" my Firefox extension list and all was working dandy when I closed it.

Then I opened it up today, FF updated to 3.0.2 and now all my extensions have disappeared and my add-on screen seems corrupted. I don't mean disabled extensions. I mean ALL extensions just don't appear and when you go to the add-on screen and click on anything, it just hangs.

Everything else seems to be working fine though but it acts like vanilla Firefox all over again without the ability to use any of the extensions ever. God, damn it! I need a hit yourself in the head smiley for this.
1720
Naw man, post away.

I checked the rar file and it's right at home with everyone else's.

I can't speak for everyone but usually what I think people or at least I consider lots of extensions are those with tons of toolbars + the extensions you listed.

To get an idea of this, go and download all the toolbars in the FF extensions page and create a self made ribbon for FF.

Btw, if you like the vertical tab bar of tabkit, you might want to check out Tree Style Tabs.

they locked me out of the forum a couple of years ago

I don't mean to offend but when a forum does this especially a security related one, isn't it time to switch products?

Thanks for the heads up though.

I'll let others elaborate for me :P

Thanks! In the words of Carol:

Wow! That's brilliant - probably better than the 2007 ribbon or 2003 toolbars !

Now this is what everyone needs!  ;D

Paul, I wasn't that offended, I'm a pretty mellow guy.  I just wanted to point it out.  I know where you're coming from, don't worry about it.  This is a different kind of forum, and people are doing such nice things for each other, we go out of our way to always be polite.  It starts from mouser and extends all the way down.

Glad things worked out. Yeah, the quality of this forum is worth a guide by itself on how to achieve the same quality on other forums.
