Pretty good point, app!
that's a *very* good point, that i hadn't even thought of.. that could probably be solved by a remapping function we could write, as long as we plan for it at time of conversion.

UrlSnooper / Re: No network adapters detected!?
« Last post by mouser on February 26, 2010, 10:52 AM »
what this suggests to me is that maybe you haven't selected the right adapter.. are you sure it's the one you are actually using? and are you saying that wireshark does get information from using this same adapter?

the only other thing i can think of is that maybe you have the "only scan this computer" checkbox unchecked, and that the adapter is refusing to operate in promiscuous mode?

if you click the "Sniff Network" button, and then open up your web browser and start sniffing around, do you see the bottom status bar start showing a count of how many packets received?

hi eliramd,

when you say urlsnooper doesn't work -- can you be more specific?
are you saying that you see the adapter, and when you click to sniff and browse the web, you can see the packet count increasing in the url snooper status bar, but that it's just not returning results you expect?

not a bad idea, though we tend to help just because we can, not to get anything.
helping people with code is also something that happens on our chat channel (see the CHAT! link above).

I guess that's the end of Yelp.

oh to be so young and full of hope..

allow me to present you with some alternative remedies:
  • find a scapegoat at the company, fire them; all is forgotten and forgiven.
  • replace the company ceo; all is forgotten and forgiven.
  • change the company name; all is forgotten and forgiven.
  • hire pr firm to explain how company has learned its lesson; all is forgotten and forgiven.
  • i could go on..

Screenshot Captor / Re: Capture Area
« Last post by mouser on February 25, 2010, 04:53 PM »
i assure you its not because the program can only capture a limited resolution -- i have a 1920z1200 monitor, and sc is quite happy to capture 4 monitors wide workspace which results in a huge file.  the problem is somehow with it not figuring out the proper screen size -- though how this could happen im not sure.

Even when I use the redbox mode, it will only capture about two-thirds of whatever I have in the box.

well this is TRULY bizarre, and a huge clue maybe.

can you do a test for me, use red box to capture a 100x100 sized region, in middle of screen, and tell me what the resulting capture dimension is?

Seem like this is a subscription based licensing system in all but name.

i think there is a key distinction one needs to make in terms of what is and is not a subscription based license.  as long as the previous version still works after the period, then i think you are talking about an upgrade price not a subscription fee.  it's only when the program stops working and you have to pay to continue using the software, that you have a subscription system.

where the line starts blurring is the case i mentioned -- where you might have a critical bug or security flaw, and don't get a fix unless you upgrade -- in that case you are basically being forced to pay or risk damage.

oh wow, a second report.. i guess this is not just a fluke.

riponred does workspace capture have same effect?

can you give me any clues about why you think it might have the size wrong?

what are the dimensions of the too-small screenshot?

This is the ugly side of review sites and of scrambling to get content into top positions in search engines.

The plaintiff claims that Yelp sales staff then began calling the hospital frequently with “high-pressure” tactics promising to move or delete negative reviews in exchange for purchasing a one-year advertising contract. The site also allegedly promised to ensure that negative reviews wouldn’t appear in Google or other search engine results.
...
During interviews with dozens of business owners over a span of several months, six people told this newspaper that Yelp sales representatives promised to move or remove negative reviews if their business would advertise. In another six instances, positive reviews disappeared — or negative ones appeared — after owners declined to advertise.
...
Because they were often asked to advertise soon after receiving negative reviews, many of these business owners believe Yelp employees use such reviews as sales leads. Several, including John, even suspect Yelp employees of writing them. Indeed, Yelp does pay some employees to write reviews of businesses that are solicited for advertising. And in at least one documented instance, a business owner who refused to advertise subsequently received a negative review from a Yelp employee.

The badges page lists people who have done coding snacks and programming school stuff, and nany stuff:
https://www.donation...ex.php?action=badges

Maybe what would be useful would be for us to set up a mailing list for such people who are involved in such things, and when people have things they want to give away, it could go to this mailing list?

i don't think it's worth the hassle of having a contest.. i've come to believe few things are :)

BUT what about this instead:

Give them to the first person who has done more then 3 Coding Snacks and requests them.

OR

Give them to the first person who has completed 5 or more assignments in the Programming School section and requests them.

8 is a bit much for one person, maybe split into 2 packages of 4 books each, and give one to each of the above criteria.

as for reasonableness, i don't think one should get hung up on major vs. minor version number changes; different authors have different standards for what accompanies such changes.  some companies will base the change purely on specifically when they want to charge people for an upgrade.

in general, i think 1yr seems like a reasonable amount of time after which to ask for an upgrade charge, and 50% seems like a reasonable discount to existing owners.  of course i much prefer lifetime upgrades, i'm just saying what sounds about reasonable.

one exception though i think has to do with security or severe bug fixes -- no one should be forced to pay for such fixes, even if (or especially if) they took a year to fix.

Interesting and cautionary tale about how trying to profit over controversy often comes back to haunt you.

You see, what Galen and I discovered was that the topics that were most effective in drawing readers were also those that skirted the edges of both legitimacy and taste. For example, if I wrote an entry detailing some deeply held belief about a particular IT vendor or technology, nobody paid any attention. However, if I simply vented about something that was bugging me – a mysterious crash in Vista or some piece of VDI “marchitecture” coming out of VMware – the attention level shot through the roof.  Eventually, I found myself enjoying the buzz that my “angry missives” would generate. Little did I realize how quickly such a model could deteriorate or how much it could damage me, personally, once it fell apart...

Developer's Corner / Re: The programmer as (starving) artist
« Last post by mouser on February 24, 2010, 08:38 AM »
i think when i make a post like this i have to remember to post the second half of my thoughts regarding the people who do the business end of things.

i have learned, repeatedly, that i do not have a taste for business.  that probably shows when i talk about "middle men".

but the flip side of this is that i also believe that ideas themselves are almost never very valuable.  unless you have the determination and will power and energy and smarts to get things done and finished, and tested, and polished, and idea is rarely any use.

and there is a lot of work and stress and struggle that goes into taking something from an idea into a successful commercial project or business.

so please when you hear me talking about how i think the content creators need to get a fair share, know that i put a very high value on the work required to make something a successful business -- i don't think that's a trivial part of the puzzle.  so i'm all for teams that split up the work evenly in terms of creative art type work vs the business end of things.  for me it always comes down to fair division of labor in terms of how many hours people put in and how much risk they are taking.

i'm not against different people making money by playing different roles -- i'm just against one person "exploiting" the work of another, trying to grab as big a share of the profits as they can based on the vagaries of an infrastructure that tends to consolidate wealth.

Some good points.

What I always worry about in such cases is the scenario where you have the public willing to pay $X for something (whether it be music, art, software), and have a line of middlemen working furiously to make sure the bulk of that money goes to them instead of the creator.

I worry that this means that the total cost of Open Source software isn't zero, but that the money spent on it goes entirely to middle men companies and support hotline companies, and none goes to the coders.

Same thing with music -- I want to make sure we don't end up with a situation where people are willing to pay $X a month for unlimited downloads, but that 99% of that goes to the internet service provider and 1% to the artist.

I just want to make sure we figure out ways for the content creators to get their fare of share of financial support, in the cases where that is important to them, without forcing the content creators to engage in day to day battles against giant corporations.

Activation/License/Language Help / Re: Problem inserting license key
« Last post by mouser on February 24, 2010, 02:59 AM »
Hi silverion, i'm the author of Process Tamer, and i'm here to help!

Usually there are 2 kinds of problems people have: one is that they done select the entire license key text, but it sounds like you did that.

The other one is that on the free license key download page, some people don't notice that there are a series of links for downloading keys, and each link is for a different program -- so it's easy to generate a license key for the wrong app.  you might try that and see if that's the problem.

If that doesn't solve the problem for you, email me ([email protected]) and i'll help some more.

screenshot captor does have a text capture mode, you could try -- not sure if it will work.
trigger a red box object capture (Ctrl Shift Prtscr), then move the cursor till the red box is the smallest box around the error text, and then click on the Gear icon in upper left of red box and look for Capture Text item in menu.

while i don't share other people's concerns about registry bloat per se, this issue with video players very much concerns me:

Also it doesn’t install a boatload of codecs and I like that. Some players load so many darned codecs and then I CAN'T easily remove them if I uninstall the player. In some cases they replace needed codecs and removing them screws everything up. Real bad if you are not especially versed in what codecs Windows needs and where to get them.
