Living Room / Re: Anyone playing Mass Effect 2 game yet?
« Last post by mouser on March 06, 2010, 09:18 AM »
I played it yesterday and didn't enjoy it.

As much as I enjoy reading about video games, I think it's time for me to admit that I really just do not enjoy playing them.

Playing these modern games makes me feel like I'm one of those grumpy old guys in a movie screaming at the kids on the street to "keep down that racket!"  It's just too much information -- controlling squads of multiple teammates in a 3d world with all these noise and explosions coming in from all directions.. frankly i just want the damn racket to stop so i can concentrate.  Too many controls and options and special abilities.. it's just information overload.

one other thing you might try, from monitor display properties, disable acceleration.

when you say it flickers -- do you mean that the windows are switching back and forth for focus (are there titlebars chaning colors?)?  can you reproduce it reliably?

what i got from urlsnooper was:
rtmp://83.64.220.55/live:80/live/livestream

so if you can figure out how to record rtmp, you could use that..

however i also noticed that they seem to be streaming it using shoutcast at:
http://212.40.5.105/...st/streaming_105.php

which means you may be able to use a shoutcast radio player/recorder to record it.

4) I don't think Boot Snooze should save the username and password (even encrypted) in the config.ini file.  Yes, that does mean the user will have to enter it each time.  I'm open to discussion on this.

what i thought was being proposed, which would be much more elegant if possible, but i'm not sure it is,
would be to set a flag saying no password is needed to login temporarily, without needing to know the users password, and then re-enabling it if it was previously enabled.

in other words, if it would be at all possible to keep BootSnooze completely out of the business of needing a password at any point, it should be done.

look for the possibility that you have another program running in the background causing this..
try existing any running processes when it happens, and see if killing one makes it go away.

first things first, make images of the hard drives onto an external usb drive.. at least that way you can always go back.

probably not what you want to hear but i'd consider sticking with xp.
and i'm a fan of "nothing but clean OS installs"

with the price of PC's these days, what i always recommend is:
  • keep your old pc and don't try to upgrade it; if it works well enough, leave it alone.
  • when you are ready to move up, buy a new computer, with windows 7 (or whatever) on it.
  • leave both machines in runnable state for a month as you migrate over any data, and take your time leisurely testing, etc.
  • after a month or so when everything runs perfectly on your new pc, and you know all your data is on the new pc and fine, then you can consider putting the old pc in a closet in case you need it one day.

How cool is this?

A group of gamers from around the world created a 100,000+ keystroke script for speedrunning The Legend of Zelda, which was used by a blind gamer in Ontario complete the game. Jordan Verner, who is blind, posted a video of himself playing Zelda and asking for help to complete the game. This inspired other gamers to spend two years composing a script that Verner could follow, and at last he did..

of the vanquish enemy coders.

there are no such things as enemy coders, only comrades.

good luck to the coders involved! for the original post that inspired these fellows, see http://fubarlabs.com...h-madness-challenge/

Have you tried my Launch Bar Commander -- I used Advanced Launcher until I coded that.

We will also be running a good discount on True Launch Bar in march, starting in the next few days.

Living Room / Re: Amazon.com == AMAZING!
« Last post by mouser on March 03, 2010, 02:16 PM »
I am also a long time and big fan of amazon.com; wherever possible i order from them.

Their shipping (especially prime) is extremely fast, and their return policy is excellent.

I do think josh is going too far in talking about the savings of free shipping when ordering heavy items; when you order something from an online-only store, and they are willing to give you free shipping on a very heavy item, you can bet that heavy items are already priced to include most of the shipping costs.  The only sensible way to compare the savings when using amazon prime (which is like $79 a year) is to look at how much you would pay if you ordered through amazon, but without Prime.

Amazon Prime is, however, great for impatient people since you do get free upgrades to 2 day delivery and cheaper overnight delivery].

It remains to be seen whether it will work, but it has to be an improvement on heuristic methods, AND once they figure out a way to differentially weight more trusted expert users, it seems to me this could work quite well.

app and Eoin are right.

there are some nice articles and utils to help you diagnose this.

I just discovered that youtube has a bunch of very good quality live performance videos from the 60s and 70s of one of my favorite groups, The Pentangle (i actually had a chance to see them live when i lived in england briefly).  They played a combination of old medieval folk songs and jazz/rock stuff.  Really amazing stuff.

Maybe start here (I Got A Feeling):
