What if users who wanted to support the site, would allow a small Google ad to be part of their post?

that's definitely an interesting idea.. however i think the reality of web ads, and perhaps this is a dirty little secret of websites that are funded by them, is that they really provide income precisely because they are a way to make money from the millions of irregular anonymous people who end up stopping by a site randomly while searching for things.  hence the obsession with search engine ranking and sites creating and naming content that will come up high in search engines.

so.. as much as it wouldn't hurt to allow hardcore dc supporters to enable ads, it would almost certainly bring in no revenue.  it might be interesting to try it just for fun though..

however, i think we've pretty much decided that ads are not for us.. as long as our members and fans will respond to fundraisers occasionally, we will be fine.

there are definitely settings in windows AND in bios that control what happens during sleep and can cause such problems.

i *think* the 2006 v2.3 edition might be an older version that anderson wrote before he did a complete rewrite and reset the numbering at v1.0.0.

My PopQuotes plugin for FARR could also be used for this, especially if you wanted to add a tagline that mentioned a specific keyword or term:

LaunchBar Commander / Re: Bug: Icons get switched around
« Last post by mouser on March 10, 2010, 09:16 AM »
it sounds like what is happening is:
LBC tried to get the icon, fails, but thinks it has added it, which messes up it's icon indices, causing items to match up to the wrong icons after that.  should be easy enough to fix, especially with a sample file that LBC fails to grab the icon from.

sounds like the problem may happen when there is an error connecting to the network.

I was lamenting on the irc channel and on a recent post that with video games becoming so cinematic these days, some of us would much more enjoy just watching someone play a video game like a movie, rather than actually playing it ourselves; especially with so little free time.

DC member ewemoa suggested http://nextgenwalkthroughs.com/ to me, and indeed it has some nicely organized walkthrough videos that look like they may fit the bill.  If anyone has other websites that collect comprehensive full-game videos, let us know!

Nextgenwalkthroughs.com was created way back in 2006 by Beer Baron and Explicit D. We've been doing walkthroughs all this time and are not planning on stopping anytime soon.  We make all of our guides on the hardest difficulty, and do voiceovers to make sure to help you through the toughest parts of the game.

that sounds very frustrating.. maybe we can talk via email -- if its crashing that often you may be invaluable to me as a beta tester so i can see if i can reproduce the problem.  can you email me at [email protected]?

Let's hope they dont REQUIRE you to do a monthly recurring charge -- there is nothing about the idea that depends on that.

I agree with Innuendo's sentiments -- ImgBurn is a great burning tool, so i see it as only a good thing if DeVeDe uses that instead of re-implementing the wheel.

Find And Run Robot / Re: suggestion: pin some entries on FARR
« Last post by mouser on March 08, 2010, 03:42 PM »
question:

when you say "pin" do you mean to affect the items shown when you bring up farr -- this is already possible and flexible in how you designate these items.
OR do you mean you want items to show always even when its searching for other stuff based on what you type.

Living Room / Re: Digital gifts
« Last post by mouser on March 07, 2010, 10:51 AM »
Nice idea for a thread. Amazon.com gift cards are good, or encourage people to make a wishlist there that you can order from -- which is a bit more fun since you get to pick which of their items you want to buy them.

Let's not forget that you can MAKE something for them digitally instead of buying something.  You can make them a drawing, or use one of those online greeting card makers, image makers, etc.

Living Room / Re: Will you miss newspapers when they're gone?
« Last post by mouser on March 06, 2010, 08:32 PM »
I'm one of those people that would 100x rather read something in print, while im walking around, than have to sit in front of pc and read it off the screen.  for me it's just a completely different experience. plus i like to write comments on whatever i'm reading in red ink, makes me feel superior.

however, in last few years, as i've grown disenchanted with the establishment newspapers, i get more and more of my news from bloggers and then from selective newspaper articles online.

so i guess for me, i miss the idealized fantasy of a good newspaper to read every day.. but i don't miss the actual loss of the actual newspapers of record.

This Month's Special Discounts and Giveaways:

And I have some good news for you, we are going to get back into the swing of organizing discounts and giveaways for members.

That's because dc member Stephen66515 has leaped into the breach and volunteered to be the new official discount coordinator at DC. yay!   So three cheers for Stephen, and when you get a chance, head over to this board, and help recommend software and companies that you would like Stephen to contact.
