T-Clock / Re: T-Clock 2010 (alpha - download)
« Last post by mouser on March 25, 2010, 07:29 AM »
Just reporting that the new version works well for me, as did the old version.
I never used the advanced features so i can't really comment on that, except to say that finding t-clock version for windows x64 was a godsend to me.

Here are the date time formatting settings i use; frankly i don't know why anyone on earth would use anything but these, so i suggest they be made not only the defaults, but the only option available unless the user is willing to hack the executable:

This looks and feels a lot like EV Nova, a 2d space game that I loved.  Seems like a great project, and I just played it for a few minutes and was very impressed.

If you are expecting the commercial grade 3d animations that you see in big budget games you will be disappointed, but if you are interested in a more minimalistic 2d sci-fi ship battle and adventurem you just might love it.

After years of work, dozens of intermediate releases, and thousands of suggestions and ideas from the loyal community, Transcendence 1.0 is finally done! To everyone who has ever played the game, and especially to those who have patiently stuck with me for release after release, I offer my most heartfelt thanks. This truly could not have happened without you.

When I released Transcendence version 0.7 back in November 2003 I was confident that I could finish a 1.0 release in a couple of years at most. Even as recently as late 2008, I thought 1.0 would appear in early 2009. While I clearly haven't learned much about predicting my own development cycle, I have learned quite a lot in creating this game. In honor of this release I'd love to share some of what I've learned in hopes that it might be of use to some of you who are engaged in your own game projects.

It also looks like their is a great deal of interesting reading to be done on the site about the one-man development team that spent 7 years on the project.  You can also read a review here: http://news.bigdownl...riday-transcendence/

joby,
can you try going into options, and on Search Behavior tab, uncheck the option to "Remove duplicate links" and see if that helps -- if it does, at least we will have a clue as to what is going on.

Neat and gentle article comparing some open source licenses..

Many developers and designers want to release their work into the world as open-source projects. They want others to be able to build on and share their code. The open-source community is vibrant because of this. Open-source software is available for virtually any application you could think of. Most designers use open-source software or code on a regular basis (WordPress, Drupal and many other CMS’ are open source).

But many developers and designers don’t have a clear picture of what the different open-source licenses really mean. What rights are they relinquishing when they choose an open-source license? Without knowing exactly what the licenses mean and how they’re best applied, developers can’t make informed decisions about which is best for their work.

is it repeatable on your setup, or is it just me?
for me its usually using the quote fonts but occasionally i do see it using the default white font.

Can you make it so when the prompt shows up, it already shows the last away message that was picked instead of being blank?
yes. you can also just hit down arrow and enter.

The quote fonts still don't get applied to the message override font.  In other words, there is no way to control the font for the message override.  If you ask me, it should follow the same settings as the quote fonts.

it's supposed to -- something strange is malfunctioning that is causing it not to.

But the font style is still not working right.  As you know, instead of quotes, I'm using the message override, so maybe the font styles don't apply to it.  Anyway, I've changed to 4 fonts in the "quote fonts" section.  These don't seem to get applied to the message that displays.

And the checkboxes are enabled for those 4 fonts? Note that it will reduce the size if it has to.

I've also changed the font style for time in the "Custom Date/Time Display" area.  But that setting doesn't stick.  If you change the font, then go to another area in the options and come back, you will see that the change reverts back to default.

Confirmed, fixing now.

Lifehacker has a longish article up today that discusses how to grab and convert flash videos..

Whether you want to save and watch a Flash video offline, convert a Flash music video for your MP3 player, or do something else entirely, learning how to rip and convert Flash videos is a useful skill. Here's how it works.

When it comes to ripping Flash videos, there's more than one way to accomplish the task, and in many cases it depends greatly on where you're grabbing the video. We'll cover a number of different options for downloading Flash videos, as well as several ways you can convert them into more useful formats. Once you've seen the options, you can choose the one that works best for you and your situation.

This is video and transcript of a talk by Andrew Tridgell on how to defend yourself against Patent Infringement claims.

I'm one of those people who believes software patents are a horrible idea, and that the patent system in general is a travesty.  If you are serious about selling your own software, you owe it to yourself to investigate this issue a little bit.  If you start to make real money, *someone* will try to sue you for patent infringement, if only to try to pressure you into buying them off.

Andrew Tridgell: Okay. So, I’m going to be talking today about patent defence for free software developers, and, as it says on the slide there, I am not a lawyer, but, the point of this talk is not to have a talk by a lawyer. The point is to learn about how an engineer interacts with patent attorneys, to teach you the basics of language and the day-to-day you do when you try to communicate with patent attorneys in building patent defence. So that’s the first part of this talk. The first part is a bit like a tutorial how an engineer interacts with patent attorneys to do analysis of patents.

The second part of it is a discussion on how the free software community can lower its exposure to patent attacks. This is something I’m quite passionate about, I am concerned that patent attacks on the free software community are going to become more common in the future, and I believe there are things that we can do as a community, as developers within the community, to lower our exposure to those attacks. That’s the aim of the second part of the talk..

the idea with the new antivirus award was to try to offer a positive REWARD in terms of publicity and acknowledgment and support to companies that do good, and maybe shaming the companies that don't.  i just don't think the other leverage points have much hope of working.

Multi Photo Quotes / Re: Feature Request: Quickly set desired slide
« Last post by mouser on March 22, 2010, 07:27 PM »
my plan is to add it this week.
the way i plan to do it is this:

you will invoke MPQ through a shortcut that passes a commandline paramter that says to query the user for the text to use, or you can pass the actual text to use.  if you pass the text string to use, it wills start and use that text string.

if you pass it the commandline arguement saying it should ask you, it will present first a quick dialog where you can select from preset text items you have configured within the program, or recent history, or something new, and will then launch, showing that text just as it shows text currently (i.e. in one of it's boxes mixed with optional photos and date/time if configured(.

I will add this feature to Multi Photo Quotes; hopefully this week.

I think what you are saying about their reputation not being hurt by excessive false positives is exactly right, and exactly the problem.
Antivirus companies don't get judged on false positives by reviewers or the public at large, and so have no disincentive to improve.  That's where the idea to try to shine the light on good policies with the award comes from -- to try to incentivize better behavior regarding false positives.

Living Room / Re: Fabricated virus warnings.

I completely respect what you are saying, and in the beginning that was basically my position -- that these antivirus companies are only hurting themselves with these bullshit lazy false positives.

I tried to rally autohotkey to more aggressively confront the antivirus companies and try to get them to stop.. but it just didn't take.  And at a certain point the damage it's doing to ahk applications is real and ongoing, and is hard to recover from.

I think maybe the solution is to tackle this on two fronts -- in the short term i think it's best to stop using UPX to pack ahk scripts -- and then at the same time try to get the antivirus companies to shape up -- to that end i've proposed trying to draw attention to a set of guidelines for excellence in antivirus behavior, and i've written about a site/award i want to start to encourage antivirus companies to be better.
