I'll start by saying that I have (until recently) had no interest in or requirement for anything like this, hence my knowledge of all things relating to video editing, conversion, production, etc is practically nil, and as such, I have absolutely no qualifications for writing this review...

Recently though my inlaws purchased a shiny new HDD camcorder...

how is that relevant?  well, for a start they are techonogically challenged.  They really shouldn't have any tech whatsoever, period.  They didn't seek any advice regarding their purchase, just what the salesmen told them on the day (I think you can see where I'm going with this....)

They have an old PIII that they can play patience on and type up the odd letter (the MIA does the odd birthday card as well...) but it's nowhere near capable of coping with the software that was supplied, nor do they have the faintest idea how to use it even if they did, so it's fallen to me to try and rescue the situation (datdaDAAA!!!!)

13.gif

I have dabbled with a few similar app's in the past (Super, DIKO, and others) but always struggled because of poor documentation and/or my aforementioned ignorance, and my results were never what I would call acceptable (in fact, in most cases they were abject failures...).

DeVeDe on the other hand was something of a revelation.  Not only was it dead simple to use, but I understood what it was doing, and I got good results (choose the output format (DVD, VCD, SVCD, CVD or DivX), add my files, answer the prompts, and I'm done!!)

The interfaces are logical, clean, and simple, with all the common functions ready to hand, and the lesser only a click away.

encoding takes a few hours, and there are a few output options - in this case writing to an image (ISO) ready for burning seems an obvious choice, but ymmv.

you can add a simple menu (limited to 12 titles), chapters, subtitles and/or audio for each title, even adjust the bitrates and audio synching.  If you add multiple files to a title it will stitch them together

the app claims to be economical on HDD space (roughly double the final file size if you delete the temp files, triple if you don't)and it cleans up after itself (nice!).  The default option is to delete all temporary files, though you can turn this off if you want.  Some of the other apps I've tried produced an extroadinary amount of temporary files (up to 10X the final file size!), and left me to clean up.

Another nice feature is the 'adjust disk space' function.  Press the button in the middle of the dialog box (the one showing the projected size) and it will adjust the bitrates (within limits - up or down) to best fit the available medium.  The result is an approximation of the final size that (they claim) may be smaller than the listed size, but will never be bigger (from use it appears that this is a very conservative estimation - it seems the result will ALWAYs be smaller than the estimation).  Useful if you're a few meg over the limit of your medium.

The help file is short (24 A4 pages), but clear.  Explanations are simple and in plain english, and cover the available functionality.  And if you can't work it out from the help file, the app is intuitive enough that browsing through the options should help to make things clearer.

Power users might prefer a more masochistic tool, but for what it does this one has got to be hard to beat (even my inlaws should be able to master this one!!)

Who is this app designed for:

It would probably suit novice's, or users with simple needs, eg converting those You-Tube video's into a DVD, bundling episodic videos so you can watch them on your TV, etc

The Good

relatively small download (20M)
all inclusive download (no other tools required!)
simple but includes all of the necessary (basic?) functionality
logical and intuitive ( )
allows a fair degree of control over the finished product (if required)
economical and tidy use of resources
documentation is clear, concise, and in plain english

The needs improvement section

for my purposes there is very little that needs improving.

One thing that initially limited my use of this tool was the limit of 99 source files.  For most purposes this is probably sufficient however in this case I had to come up with a means of stitching some of the source files together in order to meet this limit (remember my source files were from a camcorder so there were over 250!!).  Not necessarily a big issue, but another level of complexity for users (the inlaws) to potentially deal with.

If pushed, I could perhaps comment on the 'Disc Format' gui's lack of sophistication - a slicker, toolbar type GUI would perhaps be more attractive (I'm thinking along the lines of the old CloneCD here), and perhaps the inclusion of ISO burning functionality, however these these are trivial issues, and wouldn't improve the app in any way

Why I think you should use this product

this is possibly one of the simplest and fastest (encoding aside) ways to convert your digital video collection into a watchable DVD.

How does it compare to similar apps

hard for me to say, but in my limited experience most similar apps seem to be overly complex, and/or require 'helper' apps to complete the job.  Many seem to have little or no documentation, or if they do, it's written with a level of assumed knowledge that i don't have.  Net effect is usually a steep learning curve, a reliance on whatever tutes or guides you might be able to find, and a measure of good fortune.

Conclusions

this probably shouldn't strictly be considered a review, more of a recommendation from a satisfied user.  As i said before, I'm in no way qualified to make any sort of recommendations or criticisms, however I do consider myself to be a fairly typical user and as such it probably has some value.

Likewise it would be silly to assume that there aren't other tools that can do what this one does, or that there aren't tools that can perhaps do a better job, but like everything, they aren't always easy to find (well, they are, if you know what you're looking for, in which case you probably didn't need this review anyway...).

And while this probably isn't for everyone, it suits my (meagre) needs - I can watch video's with my family on the TV, and my inlaws should be able to transfer their video's to disc for show and tell nights with their friends.

if you try it, let us know here so others can benefit from your experiences...

Links to other reviews of this application

While I could find plenty of references to this tool I was unable to find any reviews of any significance (if you do find some, let me know and i'll add them here...)

completely off topic, but if you're into racing/driving sims (and you seem to be) another choice is RFactor

It's semi free (you can download and play offline for free), there's seems to be a substantial user base (there are many racing leagues), and a number of mods (the local one is based on our sedan car series - V8 supercars)

it's also very customisable, ie pretty much any setting you could change in a real race car is simulated here - this can make it quite challenging if you don't really know or understand what it's all about, but that's part of the fun, right?

many thanks for the credits (really not necessary  :-[)

did you get the amended version (toggles mute status off)?

and I wondered if a lesser volume setting would be better (as 50% is potentially quite loud...)
1680
don't you use ` (same key as the tilde for me)

not automated, but....

look at some of the html editors (and possible some of the better text editors??) - a lot of them have functions that will strip out any tags so you'll have a clean text file...

not to trump lanux here, his app sounds more a little more capable???

the attached zip file includes the setsound script and the aforementioned sound card analysis script both compiled and ready to go

Setsound_50.exe does what it says, sets the master and wave volumes at 50% then closes (50% was a nominal figure - if you want something else let us know).  Copy it to your startup folder and that should be it...

EDIT: updated the setsound script to toggle the mute status off (if it's already on...)

AHK is your friend...

the following 2 lines set the master and WAV volumes to 50%

soundset, 50
soundsetwavevolume, 50

you can change pretty much all the sound controls this way.  Code could be compiled and added to the startup directory

The AHK helpfile also includes a soundcard analysis script which may be of use/interest...
1684
of course if all else fails you could install the drive in another machine, and use the installed (and current) AV tools on that machine...

the weak point of automating the process is where you have compilation or best of albums.  The tracks on these albums are likely to be mistagged because they appear on one or several other albums....

while certainly not automated, another tool you might be interested in (I find it indispensable) is Free DB Easy Navigator (F.E.N) - get it here http://www.klaimsoft.com/salvoravida/

this tool works with a local copy of FreeDB (something of a sore point - FreeDB changed hands in the last 12 months or so and the new owners don't appear to be maintaining it...grrrr).

I use it in preference to an online search because it gives me a choice, ie for a given album there can be tens of entries, and the variations are quite amazing.  Using FEN I can search through all the entries, and in the absence of a definitive result (and i average the results on the basis that the majority must be closest to the mark) I can use it to make a more educated search elsewhere...

regardless, keep us posted on what you 'find'...

Developer's Corner / HTML Tree menu help
« Last post by Target on June 23, 2008, 01:58 AM »
not sure if this is the right 'forum' for this type of questions, but I'm looking for some assistance in tracking down what I expect will be a bit of javascript (I have no javascript knowledge)

What I want to do is build a graphical (tree) representation of a hierarchical structure.  What I have in mind is something pretty simple, ie no links or special effects.  The option to collapse/expand the tree would be nice, but not essential.

I have been googling and there appears to be plenty of builder app's, and plenty of CSS solutions, however I would like to keep this to a single file if at all possible.

Source data is in tabular (excel) format - I can see that a number of the CSS solutions use unordered lists as their source, and I can produce this relatively easily (in VBA).

What I don't seem to be able to find is a non CSS option (as usual, the problem is that I don't know the right questions to ask - then again, if i did, I probably wouldn't need to ask in the first place!!)

Question: Can you install (and boot) GParted from a SD card? I have somehow lost my USB drive and all I have are 3 SD camera cards...
-wreckedcarzz (June 16, 2008, 08:31 PM)

you'll need to check the website on that one (If I remember rightly the D/L is an ISO)

do a bit of googling on this - there are several variants on this theme, some of which may offer USB solutions (sorry I can't be of much help here...)

mebbe try Parted Magic http://partedmagic.c...wiki/PartedMagic.php, QTParted http://qtparted.sourceforge.net/, and possible UBCD (not sure about that last one, though I have a vague recollection that there is a tool in there somewhere...)
1690
you'll need a partition management tool - try GParted (a linux based boot CD) or one of the variants
1691
can you clarify for us just exactly what it is you're trying to do (cos I'm unsure)

It's probably more practical to delete the second (empty) partition and extend your primary instead of trying to 'combine' the 2

however there's nothing to stop you from installing new apps to the second partition (I install all my games to a second drive which is equivalent to using another partition...)

The only fly here is if there is insufficient space on your primary for any files that must be installed to your primary (C?) drive

I do like these for the workshop.
-cranioscopical (June 15, 2008, 10:16 PM)

cool!! sadly I don't seem to be able to access that site - I can get the home page but nothing else...

there's a chance of a cross over here - old HDD's are (apparently) a source of these rare earth magnets - you probably won't get 100lb's out of them and you can't 'turn them on & off', but they might be useful (but mind you're fingers!!!)

Living Room / Re: Shipping outside USA not an option - workaround?
« Last post by Target on May 28, 2008, 07:58 PM »
This probably breaks all sorts of international trade agreements, involves price fixing and is probably 'cartel' activity (which is certainly illegal in the UK) but some companies (Adobe is one - they actually told me they can identify the product source by the serial code) say they will not provide support or upgrades for products purchased outside the license territory.
-Carol Haynes (May 28, 2008, 07:43 PM)

interesting approach!

what happens if you move to another 'licensing territory' and you already own a legitimate copy of a given piece of software (shirley they can't expect you to buy another one just to meet their licencing requirements!!)
1696
You can do this with AHK (FileSetTime)

set up to loop through your files and/or folders with incremental changes...

Living Room / Re: The last time your AntiVirus saved you!
« Last post by Target on May 22, 2008, 07:54 PM »
short answer, never

interestingly though I appear to have had the opposite experience

I have always had an AV tool installed, but rarely used it.  I recently ran a scan (for no other reason than that I hadn't done so in about 2 years) and found a nasty - the app (AVG) 'cleaned/healed' it, but the result wasn't what I was expecting...

on rebooting there was no desktop - apparently explorer wasn't starting for some reason.  I could use an alternate shell no problems, but explorer was a no go.

Googling didn't turn up any answers so the end result was another rebuild...
