Anyone have any recommendation for an alternative program?

Oh thanks for the commandline options. I didn't know how to use the commandline so it didn't make sense to me to do it that way.

Assuming the rule is that you can't die until you get your questions answered:

What has become of all the people I met? would theoretically prolong your life until you get tired of all the answers and stop meeting people and if it gets too noisy, you could always use a noise cancelling instrument to cancel out some of the people. The knowledge also helps you die satisfied in knowing what you have done in this world before you leave this plane of existence.

Encountered a new problem:

It seems you can't regroup a folder under another folder after you have severed their relationship.

General Software Discussion / Re: List of newbie questions regarding software

Hi, feeling really sick right now so just a quick bump.

-Still trying to figure out SQLNotes though I've been feeling too weak to get the motivation to read the SQLNotes thread.
-Planning on testing Sciral's Consistency and searching for other desktop variations of habit trackers. Thanks to Apps' AnotherOneDone for reminding me of these kinds of softwares.
-Planning to do a review on Hordit

Oh, well for the Hours box, I only saw work minutes so it will be great to have an entry for hours as polyphasic sleepers usually sleep less but are awake less. A good example are uberman polyphasic sleepers who try to stick to the 20 minute sleep, 4 hours awake, repeat routine.

For the profiles, it's for storing multiple combinations. Say, some days you want to take breaks for another set amount of time, you can just switch to that setting.

General Software Discussion / Insecure Blogging
« Last post by Paul Keith on September 30, 2008, 07:01 AM »
From: http://www.dscoduc.c...secure-blogging.aspx

I use Windows Live Writer to write my blog entries and have been extremely happy with the functionality.  Last week I started thinking about how exactly the connection is made from WLW to my web server to upload my blogs.  After a little research and a few emails back and forth to the Windows Live Product Group I discovered what I feared the most:  WLW sends over your credentials in the clear text.

So what happens when you fire up WLW?  Here is what the communication looks like to the naked eye:

2008-09-30_200042.png

Yikes!  You can clearly see that included in the XML content is a username and password, for all to see.  And what's worse is that you don't even have to post anything as simply starting up WLW will send this information out in the clear!  I cringe when I think about the blogging I may have done on a public wireless network.

Ok, Matt. I've always liked the concept behind ByteSwap when I first heard of it but never got to try so I'll bite.

Thanks for taking the time to drop by the forums. It really meant alot.

specifically for lots of redundant files that gets constantly updated? (ex. data dump file entries or social bookmarking entries)

I just find those things harder to clean up than e-mail messages because I'm guaranteed to keep those files anyway but it's a PITA to re-organize those files (say after discovering a new tag that fits the whole system) that I often just start from scratch and import the files one by one but I only get so far until I need to add something again so I end up having two different accounts with two different set of files.

Ok...couple of suggestions.

-Profiles User Interface ala Activity Tracker

-Hours box (Polyphasic Sleep Attempter here so I usually take breaks between hours)

-Double Click Systray Icon to Hide Window

General Software Discussion / Re: The New (And Improved?) VLC

i had to dump vlc completely and went with wmp classic.

vlc would not play a lot of songs correctly. they would be all skipping and jumbled. so until they work it out, i'll stay away, but keep an eye on it cause it does have device functions i like.

Do you know of a way to have a video playlist in mpc? The reason I looked for vlc was because I couldn't find it.

Thanks Matt. That's more comforting to know that Hordit isn't just Byteswap's way of changing it's name because of a poor reputation.

I hope you don't mind but could you link to a third party review of Hordit? I know there used to be some for Byteswap. It's just that with these type of services, it's hard to entrust files to a service that's basically unknown (although I don't really have any important files to put into it, but better be sure than sorry.)

No problem mouser. I myself didn't notice your reply until I checked the replies to my post section because I was focused elsewhere.

(Haven't read the rest of the forum so these might have been suggested before.)

Some minor suggestions:
-drag and drop to sort the files.
-hotkey for edit configuration
-quick transform from radio button to checkbox and vice versa
-auto-minimize after lost focus
-font size sliders

Some major suggestions:
-Option to change to tag based (with autocomplete tagging) format
-RTF formatting
-Better documentation for newbies who don't understand keys, values and variables
-Ability to cut off sections that have been pasted and index them as another section. Even better if there was some way to transform part of the text that was in a description box into a section
-Checked Items Sessions
-Dual location for files (one for default folder, other for backup)
-Right click -> add entry
-Search box
-Multi-check Checkboxes
-Optional blank reference section (basically just a blank note linked to an entry to refer to urls or other programs)
-Section highlighting to differentiate between different but similar contents
-Option to have grid lines signifying each segmented section
-Option to have a percent meter slider near the bottom to clue the user on the progress of the current topic. (Doesn't need to autodetect, just an option to quickly view the amount of contents inside a folder/section)
-Option to show Word Count
-Option to show hide all these features

IMHO the later mini-series felt a lot truer to the universe

You mean Children of Dune?

I was disappointed by their Klonoa mascot though. Usually when people opt for this, it means the interface is much more user friendlier than your run of the mill OpenOffice and MS Office but what I saw staring in front of my eyes was a very foreign if not slightly similar to general Office Suite user interface. (Of course Tux is an exception to this but it's still an illusion downer)

I thought the interface was friendly it looks like MSO and it has the features in the same places (well in KSO07 anyway)

That right there is the problem. When you have a cartoon mascot, 9 times out of 10, I'm expecting a friendlier not "MSO" interface.

OK but now many people judge the software on the mascot. I have never done that, I thought it would be better to judge it on what it can do.

That's true but it's still a factor in marketing and first impressions.

Actually I didn't judge it by the mascot though it did influence my first impression, I just wasn't sure I needed an MS Office clone because of how similar the user interface looks which would normally be a good thing because it's still slightly faster compared to OpenOffice but in the case with a paid for Suite, I just don't think that cuts it. Then the first impression with the mascot came back and that was when I realized my disappointment after finding out it's just as busy looking as MS Office's user interface. A far contrast from the cartoony look of the site.

Well to be honest, it still might be worth watching. I'm not a Dune or a movie elite but Dune was one of the best hack-up job off a license movie that I've ever seen. Casting was great, plot twists were done at an ok pace and there was just something about the Dune movie that makes it less sillier than other sci-fi movies with spaceship battles and "lightsabers".

Problem solved. Ok, I need another "hit myself in the head" smiley again.

Turns out this wasn't FF's fault and it had to do with me accidentally setting all subfolders as hidden back then. Was too lazy to unhide each of them and what ends up happening is that when the program updated, it couldn't see the profile because it was hidden.

Sorry for the false assumption.

Too many times I have upgraded right away and then found that many of the extensions don't work. And I really love the response you get on Mozillazine if you inquire about it at all - "I don't use ANY extensions. Why do you need extensions?" Ha! As I often say: The best thing about Firefox are the extensions. Ans the worst thing about Firefox are the extensions."  To be honest, I wouldn't even use Firefox without extensions. And I hate when they release a new version and most extensions stop working. Hate it!

I always wait now until I see that there are no big bugs, and until all my extensions catch up with the new release.

Same here. That was why I switched to Firefox 3 after RC. It was the most stable at that time, edging out even FF2 and all the new extensions that were most likely not going to be obsolete for this version was updated already or so I thought.

If there was any doubt that this wasn't an extension problem, this was it. Flock beta also recently upgraded to follow with FF3 specifications most likely and it also ruined my add-ons and the list of extensions I had on it were close to nil compared to Firefox.

Even more glaring is that when I tried to switch to Flock/FF2 it wouldn't fix the problem at all and my add-ons still hang once you click on the options button in the add-on screen so this is definitely not a run of the mill case.

Edit: Oops, I forgot to take into account where you said you were using FF3. Yeah, I didn't know Firefox would auto-update. Bad decision on my part.
