If automatically clicking the close button on a dialog box is all you need, there are various tools to deal with it, e.g. ClickOff (freeware) and PTFB Pro.  The latter is payware, but you can find the last free version on 321download.com's Page 29.  If you're using a user account with UAC On, you may not get all features in the free ones, but PTFB Pro certainly works.  Other programs can do this too, e.g. PowerPro - PowerPro is free, but it's a whole way of life - or (I think) Macro Express which is an excellent payware macro program.

mouser,

Can anybody replicate this?

I'm using Screenshot Captor v2.82.01 - June 1st, 2010 on Vista Home Premium with a user account, UAC On.  I've hit what seems to be a weird bug.  SSC locks up when I use Shift-PrtScr = Grab selected Region.  I make a screenshot, SSC makes its capture sound, and the New Screenshot window (at least I think that's its title - the buttons on the title bar obscure it) pops up.  At that point, SSC locks up and I have to forcibly terminate it.  I didn't try scrolling region or repeat last, but all the other methods seem OK.  This behaviour mostly happens if Shift-PrtScr is the FIRST capture.  That is, if I tried other methods first, it usually, but not always, works as expected; sometimes it locks up even if I have tried another capture method first.  I think Red Box mode may have a problem?  Something like this happened with the beta, but I think earlier versions were OK.

General Software Discussion / Re: Per application keyboard remapper?
« Last post by rjbull on June 04, 2010, 02:01 PM »
I looked in AHK's Help for scan code, and found this in the Send / Send Raw (etc.) page:

{vkXX}
{scYYY}
{vkXXscYYY}
 Sends a keystroke that has virtual key XX and scan code YYY. For example: Send {vkFFsc159}. If the sc or vk portion is omitted, the most appropriate value is sent in its place.

The values for XX and YYY are hexadecimal and can usually be determined from the main window's View->Key history menu item.

Would this work better than the other method, assuming you know the scan codes you want?

I don't know for certain that this will work, only briefly tried it, but you could try HotKeyz remapper feature.  It would be a bit tedious to set it up, but...  As far as I can see, when you limit it to which windows to work with, it will only accept single items, i.e. recognises "TED" but not "TED Notepad."

You could also look at Comfort Keys.  I don't know if you can make it program-specific but you can load alternate key maps with a hotkey, which should be smooth enough.

I briefly tried deleting from the command line, can't remember if I tried wildcards, and got a message about file name being too long.  But...  kudos to f0dder!   :Thmbsup:  chkdsk did the job - eventually.  Basic "chkdsk" works, but as soon as I added a switch, "/f", it complained that I didn't have rights and it needed to be elevated.  I'm using Vista Home Premium from a user account with UAC On...  So I logged off, logged back on as administrator, tried again - only to find the same thing.   >:(  I can't remember exactly what I did then, but I copied chkdsk.exe to the root of the USB drive, fiddled about with its Properties to make it "Run as admin," and somewhere along the way it ran "chkdsk /f".  There's a thread similar to this elsewhere on DC, where Carol Haynes notes (from memory) that "chkdsk /x" would be more appropriate in these cases.  In fact my "chkdsk /f" instantly turned itself into "/x" because it said the drive had to be dismounted.  At last it ran, I accepted the defaults about changing to a file etc., and was able to delete the mess.  Windows didn't try very hard to make it easy, though.   :(

Along the way I learnt a few things.  I didn't know that USB devices have serial numbers, and can also have labels, and that SyncBack Pro can recognise either or both as a way of uniquely identifying a particular USB device, so you only run the right profile against it.  USB Safely Remove, which is on Bits du Jour again on Wednesday 9th June, can conveniently give USB devices permanent letters, i.e., as I understand it, a particular USB device is always recognised as "g:\" or whatever.  Presumably it too understands serial numbers.

I didn't try Unlocker because I thought that was mainly for deleting files that Windows thought were still in use, even where they weren't.  It's very useful for that situation, but this situation seemed different.

Thanks, folks!   :)

I have some files and directories/folders with badly corrupted names on my USB HD.  None of my three file managers can delete them.  Please can you recommend a tool that will?

Thanks...

Print electronic letterhead

CRLF from Horst Schaeffer's freeware collection PBATS - a 16-bit DOS program, but worked well for me on XP.  A quick check shows it appears to work well under Vista Home Premium as well.
CRLF 1.3 (c) Horst Schaeffer
Filter, makes CR+LF for lines terminated by CR or LF only
Options:
 /C     lines to be terminated by CR only
 /L     ... by LF only
 /T     cut trailing blanks
 /E[n]  remove empty lines [if more than n]

Curt,

Have you looked at any of these freeware/donationware hotkey programs?

I only use a few hotkeys, but I've used HoeKey for years to supply them.  All of the above have GUI windows to show you the hotkey lists, including HoeKey, and all except HoeKey have GUI configurations.  The last two are probably the most powerful.  HotKeyP packs a lot of power into its small size, about 165K download.  HotKeyz is much bigger, but has the slickest interface.

I haven't tried it, but there are a few mentions on DC of Yahoo! Pipes, which might do what you want.  See, e.g., How to automatically collect posts from a forum (that match a criteria)?
1661
do people feel like they need hotkeys for individual clips?

I doubt it's necessary, as presumably you could put "hot clips" into a special group, use a hotkey to pop up the group, and select from what would then be a shorter menu.

It reminded me of this incident, with the spellchecker in wBloggar.  ;D

Years ago I went on a photographic holiday, and in the group was someone whose day job was air traffic control.  In a later e-mail I wrote to him, I wanted to write "copilot."  The spell checker suggested "copulate."  Later I wanted to refer to the slide transparency film "Velvia."  It offered "vulva."  At that point I hastily closed the application.  I've never seen a dumb object with such a one-track mind.

Oh, I don't know.  Aren't degrees of affection, as tested by a snogometer, measured in hertz?
There's  some question about that, especially if the degree is only a third.

Clearly, those would be the black hertz.
Very good, can I buy you a bier?

Maybe Notefrog?  But you need the latest 1.6, and the download only seems to be 1.5.3 at present.

[Edit] 2010-05-25: May have just been me, or maybe the installer isn't perfect.  I uninstalled completely, using Total Uninstall, started over, and now I have 1.6 working.[/Edit]

It's $19.95, including all version 1 upgrades.

General Software Discussion / Re: Windows shortcut hotkeys broken?

Well, I'm glad it's not just me!  :o  Thanks for the moral support  ;)

@lanux128:  I think I've seen that behaviour, but even with a shortcut to something on the desktop, it seemed slow, so I abandoned native Windows hotkeys in favour of Hoekey.

@sajman99:  I'm using O-A 4.0.0.15.  Both Hoekey and PopSel were Allowed under Configuration > Programs.  You mean, put them in tab Options > Exclusions?  I'll try that; thanks, sounds like it should help.

General Software Discussion / Windows shortcut hotkeys broken?
« Last post by rjbull on May 23, 2010, 04:22 PM »
If you make a shortcut, then click on Properties, you get a window with several tabs.  The Shortcut tab lets you set a "Shortcut key" hotkey to activate the program.

These hotkeys don't work for me.

I checked with Nir Sofer's ShortcutsMan shortcuts manager, which reported the hotkey set, but pressing the hotkey didn't activate the program.  Nothing happened, though sometimes the foreground application would lose focus.

Do other people have problems with this, and is there a cure?  I'm running Vista Home Premium with UAC On, and routinely a User Account rather than an Admin one.

This problem has got worse recently.  Because I couldn't get hotkeys to work natively I use Hoekey to supply them instead.  This works.  However, I also run Online Armor Firewall.  Until recently I ran with HIPS Off, and things were as acceptable as they ever are with Windows.  I just turned HIPS On, and now it takes ages for the hotkey to operate.  This is particularly important because I mostly use Horst Schaeffer's PopSel to launch programs and use a Hoekey hotkey to pop up the menu, so loading programs is currently maddeningly slow.

I just posted a query about HIPS slowing things down in the Online Armor forum, but can anyone shed any light on the non-performance of the native WIndows hotkey feature?

Thanks...

I just re-read this thread, following cranioscopical's post here: Re: ATNSOFT Key Manager, Key Remapper, Text Paster - 30% Discount Coupon Code

Just wanted to add: last August (2009) I asked Insight Software if they had plans to make a portable USB version of Macro Express.  They replied they had a portable version under active consideration, but were short of time, and couldn't give a definite time frame for when it would be available.

I find that Macro Express makes creating hot keys simple.
-cranioscopical (May 19, 2010, 03:34 PM)

I have a license for Macro Express, and used it a bit at work.  It seems a good program, but often seemed too heavy-duty, somehow.  There's clearly a lot of complexity, which can be intimidating, even if you don't intend to use much of it.  Nudone's first post in this thread (the OP was about ATNSOFT) seemed to call for a lighter-weight and perhaps more focussed application.  Also, Macro Express is payware - I'm not saying it isn't worth the price, I think it is, but free is a particularly good price.

For free, there's still Anthony Mathews' Macro Maker, but I think it can only store its macros in the Registry.  Also, the author notes that there's a problem setting system hooks to create macro recordings under Vista, just as there is with HotKeyz, so it looks like Microsoft's security model has well and truly screwed up convenience and productivity.
1673
all of this examination makes me think there needs to be a DC software shootout on all of these (and more to come i'm sure) hotkey managers.

zridling's Web page had some very useful material, but it's long gone  :(  Most people on DC seem besotted with AHK, but I'd like something that's quick and easy to set up without needing even elementary programming.

1) TapTap only seems to accept single- or double-tap, not as configurable as HotKeyIt's RapidHotkey function;
-Onesimus Prime (May 17, 2010, 05:52 PM)

It looks like it should allow you to define taps to take the place of keys missing from your keyboard, which is more or less what I thought you meant.

2) I think the temporary holding-down of certain hotkeys might be an important part of flexibility in this.  Maybe even some sort of Shift lock/toggle thing, where I click one place in a document, toggle Shift-lock on, click another place to highlight everything in between, toggle Shift-lock off.

You've practically reinvented WordStar there - see, e.g., A Writer's Word Processor by SF author Robert Sawyer.  Meanwhile, other hotkey utilities you might check out include HotKeyP and HotKeyz (both freeware), especially the latter, which knows about keyboard redefinition.  Both can stack multiple commands from a single hotkey, including menus.

And part of my underlying question is, is this whole approach too complex?  Is there some out-of-the-box thinker who can say "Wait, what about this way that's easier to both implement for the developer and remember for the end-user?"  And I'd say, "Huh, never thought of that!"

If you hadn't requested simplicity I would have suggested PowerPro  ;)
