General Software Discussion / Re: Rant: Firefox 3.5.x
« Last post by Innuendo on September 25, 2009, 01:03 PM »
Let me temper my praise with the tidbit of information that I am running Windows 7. There may very well be something at an OS level that is helping me and hindering you if you are running a different OS.

Just a wild-@$$ed guess, though. Shooting in the dark, if you will....

A quick Google search says all you need are a couple harmless reg entries to enable FLV thumbnails. I found a pretty good discussion along with instructions here:

General Software Discussion / Re: Copy a bunch of cd/dvd
« Last post by Innuendo on September 25, 2009, 11:13 AM »
Nuri, tell us what's on all those discs so we can tell you what to use to copy them. If it's all stuff like pictures, music and stuff you've burned on them yourself you won't have any troubles.

If it's store-bought games, music, movies, etc. you're going to need something more than just ImgBurn.

General Software Discussion / Re: Rant: Firefox 3.5.x
« Last post by Innuendo on September 25, 2009, 11:11 AM »
I have been trying to run with each and every Firefox release of the 3.5.x line, and each one has its own severe issues that are obvious immediately after using it for several hours.

Slowness, responsiveness and halts are the most common problems for me.

I'm going to now utter the most useless words that can present themselves in a thread concerning computer problems.

Are you ready?

It doesn't happen on my machine.

I'm running Firefox v3.53 with a profile that hasn't been considered new since the early v3.0x days and I've run every release version and several beta versions of Firefox with this very same profile. I'm running 48 extensions with 19 GreaseMonkey scripts.

Granted everything I have shoehorned into Firefox I suppose I should be experiencing problems, but I'm not. I do, however, use a liberal selection of things like Ad Muncher, NoScript, etc. to ensure that I am in charge of the web content that comes across my screen such as evil ads that do more than just advertise, cross-site scripting and all that other slimy crap web surfers have to deal with these days.

In short, I think Firefox v3.5x is the best version yet & I can't wait for it to get better.

General Software Discussion / Re: video player software.

I was not aware of KMPlayer being sold. There may be a communication barrier between the Korean author and the English support forum, but last I read in the English forum private beta versions are still being released to testers.

And yes, KMPlayer is nothing short of amazing. If was able to sell it for a bucket of money then more power to him. And if he's working on a new player I can't wait to see it. I'm sure it'll be no less powerful.

I suppose it is possible this is a prelude to spam, but I don't see anything to warrant such an accusation in the OP.

Where I come from we usually presume innocent till proven guilty. If this is an innocent person asking a simple question some of the remarks in this thread are not very welcoming & not putting this forum's membership's best foot forward.

But also don't forget that the OP did not say that every disc (or any disc, for that matter) that he wants to copy is full to capacity or even what the approximate size of the data is only how many discs.

Or how many of those discs are CDs. If the ratio is 148 CDs and 2 DVDs then even if they were full he'd have plenty of room.

Or maybe time travel is one of the new features of Windows 7?

It's going to be Microsoft's answer to Apple's Time Machine.  :)

I can't fault Dell. I'm typing on a Dell right now. I even got a free set of Klipsch ProMedia 2.1 speakers from them. If they can send out a set of $150 speakers to make me happy I'm sure sending out some media isn't out of reach.

katy, I'd love to recommend something more valuable, but I can't think of a commercial video player at any price that has even 20% of the enhancement options KMPlayer has.

Never hurts to ask. Worst they can do is say no & I have seen companies in the past issue upgrades to customers who couldn't get the current release to work. If his BIOS allows activation of an OEM Win 7 copy like he says then his machine can't be that old.

One of my best friends signed up to host a Windows 7 house party. At this point in time it looks like he's been selected and will be receiving one of those signed copies of Windows 7.

Wonder if you could talk Dell into upgrading you to a Dell OEM Win 7 disc for all the trouble you have had with Vista.

Oh, definitely try KMPlayer. It is absolutely mind-boggling how many options the programs gives to enhance/modify video file playback.

Highly recommended.

One thing you might want to try if you haven't already. Make sure your laptop has the latest BIOS. I have read that some versions of some BIOSes on some PCs (vague enough for you?) have botched SLIC tables that won't allow the OEM OS to activate and a BIOS update fixes it.

But you shouldn't be messing with Vista anyway. Windows 7 is going to be out soon & Microsoft has righted a lot of wrongs (real or imagined) that they perpetrated with Vista.

I'm a little confused about your statements as well, 40hz. Threatfire is a heuristics-based product as it does not use signatures. Why do you use it if you dislike heuristics-based tools?

General Software Discussion / Public Service Announcement: AIMP2 is Evilware
« Last post by Innuendo on September 22, 2009, 09:39 AM »
This morning I thought I'd check out AIMP2 to see if it had the right stuff to become the mp3 player on my system. Surfing over to www.aimp.ru showed that v2.60 RC 1 is the latest version which I promptly downloaded from their server and installed.

Everything was going great & I thought I might have a winner until about 10 minutes into my tests AIMP2 was sitting idle & my firewall program informed me AIMP2 was trying to make a connection to www.007guard.com. Odd, I thought, as I denied the connection request. As I sat and mulled this over AIMP2 tried to contact that web site again no less than three times every time on a different port. Very odd indeed.

Hitting up Google revealed that there's only one purpose for www.007guard.com's existence and that is to spread the 007guard adware program. It's an evil little program that monitors all of your internet traffic and redirects all internet searches.

EDIT: AIMP2 v2.51 does not seem to have this behavior and seems to be clean thus far.

When did AIMP2 cross over to the dark side? I guess the author got tired of not being compensated for his work. I suggest anyone who has installed this lately check to see if they are infected.

General Software Discussion / Re: Complaint: Softwrap (nasty eula)
« Last post by Innuendo on September 22, 2009, 08:46 AM »
I always buy my software, tuck it away in a safe place, and run cracked/hacked versions. When I reinstall my system I don't want the fact of how many system reinstalls I may have done in the past affecting how I may use my purchased software now because, well....it's my purchased software. I'm the only one using it and only using it on one PC so kindly please, software authors and software-protection authors, butt out of my life.

It's a proven fact that a lot of DRM/copy-protection schemes adversely affect the stability of the system it is being run on. It is also a proven fact that often when a protection scheme has been stripped from an app (and especially a game) that mysterious crashes and performance-ruining stutters, etc. just go away.

If I buy my software, the author is being paid so it should not affect them one way or the other if I use a cracked version of their software. The protection scheme author has already been paid by the software author so it doesn't affect them, either as they have already been paid before the software even reached my hands.

It is interesting, however, how quickly a SoftWrap rep was attracted to this thread, though. They must spend a fair bit of time trawling the internet looking for detractors of their product.

The issue with conspiracy theories like this believing that any organization needs YOU to actually do extra stuff (sign up for facebook, etc.) to find out a lot about you. Daily lives activity reveals so much more valuable (for 'them') information ...credit card usage, debit card usage, phone calls, etc.

While this is of course all true the average company does not have the ability to access anyone's phone bills or credit card statements. At least in America, jumping through legal hoops with warrants and such to obtain such information.

However, taking a potential applicant's name and plugging it into Google or whatever only takes a minute. And believe me, this is not a conspiracy theory. Companies are using everything at their disposal when it comes to human resources.

And if I had a nickel for every story I've read about someone getting fired because of something they posted on their Myspace or Facebook page...

Yes, but the difference is, I consider sites like facebook and myspace to be pure evil.

Oh, but they are not, Josh. Sites like Facebook and Myspace are the greatest inventions of the new millennium and I'll tell you why. What with AOL's recent huge decline on the digital landscape sites like Facebook are perfect corrals to keep the mouth-breathers busy forwarding stuff to others and playing those silly little games which means less time they'll have to fill my email inbox full of mindlessly forwarded crap junk email.

Sites like Myspace and Facebook are like the Chuck E Cheeses of the internet.  :)

Not exactly a conspiracy theory, but I do know for a fact a lot of companies are searching MySpace, FaceBook, etc. for job applicants as part of the hiring process. If anything turns up they remotely don't like gets the job application tossed out.

All the free solutions seem to have more false positives than the paid solutions even ones from the same company. I figure the fine-tuning of the detection engines is one of those value-added features you get with a paid subscription.

If you aren't dead-set on a security suite you might want to give MS's new Security Essentials a look. It's an AV that's very light on resources. Since it's so new, though, it's probably too early to tell how good its detection rates are.

The most popular choices in free internet security suites seem to be (in no particular order):

AVG
Avast
Avira

If you can't find what you want in the realm of free programs I suggest you try Eset's Smart Security Suite. It was very light on resources the last time I tried it.
